Outcome by treatment modality in sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC): A case-series, systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an aggressive malignancy first described by Frierson et al. in 1986. As the tumor is very rare, current treatment recommendations are based on institutional case reports. We thus felt the need to perform a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate how treatment modalities are associated with survival. DESIGN: Case-series, systematic review and meta-analysis METHODS: We searched the OvidMedline, OvidEmbase, Web of Science, Biosis, Scopus and the Cochrane Library database libraries. We extracted aggregate and indiv

Treatment outcomes of intensity-modulated radiotherapy versus 3D conformal radiotherapy for patients with maxillary sinus cancer in the postoperative setting.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we compared the treatment outcomes of postoperative 3D conformal radiotherapy (RT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma. METHODS: Fifty-four patients underwent surgery and postoperative RT, of whom 27 (50%) had squamous cell carcinoma and 14 (26%) had adenoid cystic carcinoma. Nineteen patients (35%) were treated with IMRT and 35 patients (65%) received 3D conformal RT. The median radiation dose for 3D conformal RT and IMRT were 62.1 and 63 Gy, respectively. RESULTS: IMRT produced significantly superior radiation d

Long-term survival of a patient with primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SNEC) of the paranasal sinuses is an extremely rare and distinctive tumor with aggressive clinical behavior. Moreover, SNECs originating in the head and neck region have been reported to be highly aggressive and to have a poor prognosis. This report describes a patient with a maxillary sinus SNEC who was successfully treated with induction chemotherapy using cisplatin and etoposide followed by concurrent chemoradiation therapy with cisplatin and etoposide as radiosensitizers. The patient has remained free of recurrence during 7 years of follow-up. To the au

Primary neuroblastoma of the maxillary sinus.

Although neuroblastoma is the most common of extracranial solid tumors of childhood and infancy, we report the first case of an isolated neuroblastoma of a paranasal sinus. A 15-year-old girl with a right maxillary sinus mass was asymptomatic except for persistent epiphora. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans showed that the mass extended into the nasal cavity, encroached on the lamina papyracea, and obstructed the nasofrontal duct. An extensive workup revealed no evidence of systemic disease. The patient underwent right craniofacial resection. Immunohistochemistry and ele

[Traumatic carotid-cavernous aneurysm after removal of cancer of the upper jaw: a case report].

A case of a traumatic carotid-cavernous aneurysm after removal of cancer of the upper jaw was reported. A 63-year-old male complaining of massive epistaxis from the left nostril was admitted to our clinic. He had suffered from cancer of the left upper jaw and had been treated with radical operation. During the surgical procedure, massive bleeding which was considered to be from the left internal carotid artery, suddenly occurred. The hemorrhage was somehow controlled by packing with oxidized cellulose. He experienced recurrent massive epistaxis after admission. Cerebral angiograms revealed an

Pathological evaluation of radiotherapy and concomitant intraarterial cisplatin for maxillary sinus cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Since 2010, we have mainly performed surgical treatment following radiotherapy and concomitant intraarterial cisplatin (RADPLAT) for locally advanced maxillary sinus cancer (MSC). The present study investigated treatment results and pathological evaluations following RADPLAT for MSC. METHODS: Pathological response to RADPLAT was evaluated using surgical specimens. Pathological response was graded in accordance with the classification method that Shimosato reported in 1964, as grade V (no tumor cells remain in any of section), grade IV, III, II, I, and 0. Five-year overall and disea

Iatrogenic takotsubo cardiomyopathy induced by locally applied epinephrine and cocaine.

A 67-year-old man underwent surgery under general anaesthesia to obtain a biopsy from a tumour in the left maxillary sinus. Before the procedure a mucosal detumescence containing epinephrine and cocaine was applied onto the nasal mucosa. Shortly after termination of anaesthesia the patient developed tachycardia and an abrupt rise in blood pressure followed by a drop to critical levels. The patient turned pale and clammy but denied chest pain at any time. An ECG showed inferolateral ST-segment elevation, and troponin T was elevated at 0.773 ng/mL. An acute coronary angiography demonstrated norm

Transmandibular approach for excision of maxillary sinus tumors extending to pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae.

En bloc resection of maxillary sinus tumors that extend through the posterior wall necessitates resection of maxilla along with pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae contents. This cannot be readily performed by conventional anterior maxillectomy approaches. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of transmandibular approach for the excision of maxillary sinus tumors extending to pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae. This is a retrospective review of 15 consecutive patients who underwent maxillectomy with transmandibular approach for tumors with posterior extension,
