Treatment Options in Maxillofacial Fractures.

From 2000 to 2010, 720 patients with facial trauma were admitted in Plastic Surgery Service of Argerich Hospital, Buenos Aires, Argentina; 58 of them with panfacial fractures were included in this study. Height velocity impact is the principal etiology, and most concomitant extrafacial injuries are neurocranium and cervical spine. Common affected areas were orbits, nose, and malar-zygoma. The timing of the treatment was airway evaluation, control of bleeding and consciousness, treatment of associated injuries, and finally facial reconstruction. The applications of craniofacial surgical techniq

Dentoalveolar trauma.

Dentoalveolar injuries represent a serious dental problem for the patient. Time from injury to treatment is a major factor in the outcome of many of these injuries. To decrease dental pain and suffering and enhance the prognosis, medical personnel must recognize the presence of dentoalveolar injuries and consult with, or refer the patient to, a dentist as soon as possible.

[Results in the treatment of lateral middle face fractures].

During 1960-1973, 90 patients with lateral midface fractures were treated at the Rostock University Clinic and Policlinic of Stomatology. 68 patients underwent a clinical and radiographic follow-up examination. The intra-antral operation methods had yielded better results than the extra-oral treatments. To reduce late sequelae which are observed also in patients for whom a surgical approach had not been indicated, the authors recommend an exact diagnostic evaluation of the lateral midface fractures and a close interdisciplinary co-operation of the oral surgeon and the ophthalmologist.

Evaluation of geriatric head and neck trauma cases in a German highest-level trauma centre from 2018 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric populations face heightened vulnerability due to aging, socioeconomic challenges, and marginalization. In 2023, 18.1% of Germans over 65 were at risk of poverty, with women and those aged 80 + disproportionately affected. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (2020-2022) exacerbated these issues, restricting healthcare access. This study investigates geriatric head and neck trauma trends (2018-2024) across pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods. METHODS: Conducted at a level 1 trauma centre, data were sourced from the Dortmund Maxillofacial Trauma Registry (14,500 + cases,

Work-related traumatic dental injuries: Prevalence, characteristics and risk factors.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The prevalence of work-related oral trauma is underestimated because minor dental injuries are often not reported in patients with several injuries in different parts of the body. In addition, little data are available regarding their characteristics. The aim of this epidemiological study was to determine the prevalence, types, and characteristics of occupational traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in a large working community. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Work-related TDIs that occurred during the period between 2011 and 2013 in the District of Genoa (Northwest of Italy, 0.86 million

Evaluation of accuracy of photogrammetry with 3D scanning and conventional impression method for craniomaxillofacial defects using a software analysis.

BACKGROUND: Facial mutilation and deformities can be caused by cancer, tumours, injuries, infections, and inherited or acquired deformities and has the potential to degrade one's quality of life by interfering with fundamental tasks like communication, breathing, feeding, and aesthetics. Depending on the type of defect, producing maxillofacial prostheses for the rehabilitation of patients with various defects can be challenging and complex. The prosthesis is used to replace missing or damaged parts of the cranium and face, like the nose, auricle, orbit, and surrounding tissues, as well as miss

Volume and Structure of Maxillofacial Trauma Before, During, and After COVID-19 Restrictions: A Multicentre Interrupted Time-Series and Period-Comparative Analysis of 3954 Patients.

Background and Objectives: COVID-19 restrictions altered population mobility and healthcare use. Most reports describe changes in facial-trauma counts; fewer characterise how injury composition changed or separate policy-associated changes from the secular trend. We examined the volume and structure of maxillofacial trauma around the March 2020 restrictions and the January 2022 easing of restrictions. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of 3954 patients treated for confirmed facial fractures between 2018 and 2023 at three Slovak tertiary centres. The primary outcome was the monthly co

Tracheostomy in trauma patients with rib fractures.

PURPOSE: Patients with rib fractures (RF) may require prolonged mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy. Indications for tracheostomy in trauma patients with RF remain debatable. The goal was to delineate characteristics of patients who underwent tracheostomy due to thoracic versus extra-thoracic causes, such as maxillofacial-mandibular injury (MFM), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and cervical vertebrae trauma (CVT), and to analyze clinical outcomes. The predictive values of chest trauma scoring systems for tracheostomy were also evaluated. We hypothesized that tracheostomized patients were mor

Comparison of post-operative outcomes of graft materials used in reconstruction of blow-out fractures.

BACKGROUND: Trauma to the face caused by assault or impact may cause internal orbital fracture. Increased intraorbital pressure without disruption of soft tissue integrity or causing a fracture line in orbital rims or orbital floor fractures described as 'orbital blow-out fracture'. Such fractures have been categorized as 'pure blow-out fractures' in which only the orbital floor is affected, and 'impure blow-out fractures' in which other maxillofacial bones such as zygoma, maxilla and nasoethmoid are also affected. Physical examination reveals periorbital edema and ecchymosis, subconjunctival

Orbital Surgical Guidelines: Pediatric Considerations.

Pediatric orbital and skull base surgery comprises a wide array of tumors. An understanding of the location of the lesion, nature of the disease, and surrounding anatomy is paramount to surgical planning in these small spaces. The goals of pediatric skull base surgery are to avoid injury to the surrounding structures, minimize cosmetic deformities, and remove some or all of the tumors based on anticipated pathology and biologic cost of removal. Safe surgery on many of these tumors requires an understanding of the location of the lesion relative to the optic nerve or orbit. This is particularly

Optic nerve size in traumatic optic neuropathy.

The assessment of traumatic optic neuropathy in a neurologically impaired patient is difficult, and the size of the optic nerve has been suggested as a potential adjunct in differential diagnosis. This controlled retrospective study was designed to evaluate the size of the optic nerve involved in traumatic optic neuropathy when compared to the optic nerve in the noninjured eye. Maxillofacial computerized tomographs of 22 patients were examined; intraorbital optic nerve diameter was measured on injured and noninjured sides, with the examiner unaware of the side of injury. No statistically signi
