Is grip strength a marker for cognitive function, neurodegeneration, and resilience?

Assessing whether grip strength is associated with cognitive decline and brain health could help identify a target to prevent or delay cognitive impairment. Therefore, we tested whether grip strength is associated with brain health as indicated by magnetic resonance imaging and domain specific cognitive decline. We also assessed whether grip strength was a cognitive resilience proxy using moderation tests. This study included cognitive and neuroimaging data from 861 participants in three harmonized cohorts. We fit multivariable linear mixed-effects and linear regression models to test associat

Minute-scale oscillatory sequences in medial entorhinal cortex.

The medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) hosts many of the brain's circuit elements for spatial navigation and episodic memory, operations that require neural activity to be organized across long durations of experience1. Whereas location is known to be encoded by spatially tuned cell types in this brain region2,3, little is known about how the activity of entorhinal cells is tied together over time at behaviourally relevant time scales, in the second-to-minute regime. Here we show that MEC neuronal activity has the capacity to be organized into ultraslow oscillations, with periods ranging from tens

Neurocognitive Profiles of Caucasian Moyamoya Disease Patients in Greece: A Case Series.

The impact of Moyamoya Disease (MMD) on cognition inadult Caucasian patients has not yet been thoroughly investigated. The current study is the first to present detailed neuropsychological data on a series of Greek patients with MMD. A group of eight patients was assessed with an extensive neuropsychological battery, including measures of episodic memory, working memory, executive functions, language, and social cognition. The results indicated that MMD may be characterized by a trichotomous neurocognitive profile, characterized by prominent impairment in working memory, executive functions, a

Autobiographical memory specificity and emotional disorder.

The authors review research showing that when recalling autobiographical events, many emotionally disturbed patients summarize categories of events rather than retrieving a single episode. The mechanisms underlying such overgeneral memory are examined, with a focus on M. A. Conway and C. W. Pleydell-Pearce's (2000) hierarchical search model of personal event retrieval. An elaboration of this model is proposed to account for overgeneral memory, focusing on how memory search can be affected by (a) capture and rumination processes, when mnemonic information used in retrieval activates ruminative

Assessment of Sleep, Cognitive Performance, and Circulating Cytokines in Adults with Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

Background/Objectives: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is commonly accompanied by sleep disturbance and cognitive complaints, but the relationships among CRS, cognition, subjective sleep, and circulating inflammatory cytokines remain incompletely understood. Methods: In this case-control study, 80 adults with CRS and 98 controls completed validated sleep and sinonasal questionnaires and a 12-test cognitive battery assessing six domains. Plasma cytokines were measured in 101 participants with available biospecimens. Multivariable linear regression and exploratory correlation analyses were performe

Differentiating the effects of centrally acting drugs on arousal and memory: an event-related potential study of scopolamine, lorazepam and diphenhydramine.

The degree to which apparent amnesic effects of various centrally acting drugs are secondary to their effects on arousal remains a contentious issue. The present study uses two methods to dissociate memory and arousal effects of the cholinergic antagonist, scopolamine (SP), and the GABA-A/benzodiazepine receptor agonist, lorazepam (LZ). First, it compared their effects to those of an antihistamine, diphenhydramine (DPh), to provide an active control for arousal reduction. Second, it used the same measure--event-related potentials (ERPs)--as as a parallel index of both the arousal and cognitive

Ventral striatal and caudate contributions to episodic retrieval.

Striatal activity during episodic memory retrieval is a robust phenomenon observed across various stimulus types and experimental paradigms. Previous research suggests that the ventral striatum and the caudate contribute differentially to retrieval processes: ventral striatal activity is posited to vary with the intrinsic reward of successful retrieval, whereas caudate activity is attributed to effortful cognitive control. The present fMRI study aimed to test the overarching hypothesis that these striatal subregions make distinct contributions to episodic retrieval and to further specify their

Brain metabolic resilience conferred by the APOE3 Christchurch variant in autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease and across the adult lifespan.

The APOE3 Christchurch ( APOE3 Ch ) is a rare genetic variant associated with marked protection against autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease (ADAD) due to the PSEN1 E280A variant, by delaying the onset of clinical symptoms. In this study, we investigate age-related alterations in cerebral glucose metabolism, measured with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, and cognitive performance in: 1) APOE3 Ch - PSEN1 E280A carriers (n = 7) compared to typical PSEN1 E280A carriers (n = 48) across the ADAD continuum; and 2) cognitively-unimpaired APOE3 Ch carriers (n = 29) compared to no

A normative study of the free and cued selective reminding test in Mandarin-speaking adults in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: Episodic memory decline is among the earliest and most prominent cognitive changes observed in both normal aging and Alzheimer's disease. The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) enhances differentiation of memory deficits through controlled semantic encoding and cue-based retrieval. However, culturally appropriate normative data for Mandarin-speaking adult populations have been lacking. This study aimed to establish normative data for the Taiwan version of the FCSRT (T-FCSRT), examine demographic effects on test performance, and evaluate its psychometric properties and cl

Synergistic effects of plasma S100B and MRI measures of cerebrovascular disease on cognition in older adults.

There is growing interest in studying vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) and developing biomarkers to identify at-risk individuals. A combination of biofluid and neuroimaging markers may better profile early stage VCID than individual measures. Here, we tested this possibility focusing on plasma levels of S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B), which has been linked with blood-brain-barrier (BBB) integrity, and neuroimaging measures assessing BBB function (water exchange rate across the BBB (kw)) and cerebral small vessel disease (white matter hyperintensities (

Positive Psychosocial Factors and Cognitive Decline in Ethnically Diverse Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Previous cross-sectional studies have documented associations between positive psychosocial factors, such as self-efficacy and emotional support, and late-life cognition. Further, the magnitudes of concurrent associations may differ across racial and ethnic groups that differ in Alzheimer's disease risk. The goals of this longitudinal study were to characterize prospective associations between positive psychosocial factors and cognitive decline and explicitly test for differential impact across race and ethnicity. METHODS: 578 older adults (42% non-Hispanic Black, 31% non-Hispanic

Amnesia in an actor: Learning and re-learning of play passages despite severe autobiographical amnesia.

We describe the case of an accomplished actor, whom we term AB, who suffered severe amnesia following a cardiac arrest and hypoxic brain damage, affecting medial temporal and thalamic structures. His performance on standard episodic memory tests, and on measures of retrograde amnesia, including autobiographical memory, was severely impaired. When presented with passages from plays he had not appeared in, AB showed a severe impairment at the first learning trial, but thereafter showed a 'normal' learning curve for this semantically and syntactically complex material. On being presented with pas

The extended hippocampal-diencephalic memory system: enriched housing promotes recovery of the flexible use of spatial representations after anterior thalamic lesions.

The anterior thalamic (AT) nuclei constitute an important component of an extended hippocampal-diencephalic system, and severe persisting memory deficits are normally found after AT damage. This study examined whether postoperative enrichment promotes the recovery of the flexible use of spatial representations in rats with AT lesions. After training to swim from a single constant start position to a submerged platform in a Morris water maze, rats with AT lesions that were housed in standard cages (AT-Std) performed poorly when required to swim to the platform from novel start positions during

Episodic processes in moral decisions: Evidence from medial temporal lobe amnesia.

Theoretical accounts of moral decision making imply distinct ways in which episodic memory processes may contribute to judgments about moral dilemmas that entail high conflict between a harmful action and a greater good resulting from such action. Yet, studies examining the status of moral judgment in amnesic patients with medial temporal lobe (MTL) lesions have yielded inconsistent results. To examine whether and how episodic processes contribute to high conflict moral decisions, amnesic patients with MTL damage and control participants were asked to judge the moral acceptability of a harmful

Medial entorhinal-hippocampal desynchronization parallels the emergence of memory impairment in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease pathology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive impairments in episodic and spatial memory, as well as circuit and network-level dysfunction. While functional impairments in medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) and hippocampus (HPC) have been observed in patients and rodent models of AD, it remains unclear how communication between these regions breaks down in disease, and what specific physiological changes are associated with the onset of memory impairment. Here, we use silicon probes to simultaneously record neural activity in MEC and HPC before or after the o

Temporal context memory in high-functioning autism.

Episodic memory, i.e. memory for specific episodes situated in space and time, seems impaired in individuals with autism. According to weak central coherence theory, individuals with autism have general difficulty connecting contextual and item information which then impairs their capacity to memorize information in context. This study investigated temporal context memory for visual information in individuals with autism. Eighteen adolescents and adults with high-functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger syndrome (AS) and age- and IQ-matched typically developing participants were tested using a rec

The rostral prefrontal cortex underlies individual differences in working memory capacity: An approach from the hierarchical model of the cognitive control.

Neuroimaging and behavioral evidence has suggested that the lateral prefrontal cortex is involved in individual differences in working memory capacity (WMC). However, few studies have localized the neural structures that differentiate high and low WMC individuals, considering the functional architecture of the prefrontal cortex. The present study aimed to identify a frontal region that underlies individual differences from the perspective of the hierarchical architecture of the frontal cortex. By manipulating an episodic factor of cognitive control (control in selecting an appropriate task set

Nourishing the Brain or the Mood? Dietary Omega-3s for Psychological, but Not Cognitive Health.

Background: Mood disturbances, often accompanied by cognitive deficits, represent a major public health challenge. Diet is increasingly recognized as a modifiable factor in mental health, with specific nutrients such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) showing therapeutic potential. This study investigated whether dietary omega-3 intake moderates variations in cognitive performance associated with psychological symptoms in non-clinical samples. Method: A total of 313 healthy adults completed a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intake. Psychological symptoms were m

Hippocampal Pallium Lesion Impairs Transitive Inference in Goldfish.

Transitive inference, a process that involves drawing logical conclusions based on preliminary information, is considered a cornerstone of human deductive reasoning. Furthermore, transitive inference is a clear instance of representational flexibility as it implies the novel expression of learned information. In mammals and birds, both episodic memory and transitive inference critically depend on the integrity of the hippocampus. Comparative neurobiological evidence indicates that a hippocampus homologue can also be found in the telencephalic pallium of teleost fish. Here, we investigated whet
