The Lewy body variant of Alzheimer's disease: a clinical and pathologic entity.

Thirty-six clinically diagnosed and pathologically confirmed Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients included 13 with cortical and subcortical Lewy bodies (LBs). The patients with LBs appeared to constitute a distinct neuropathologic and clinical subset of AD, the Lewy body variant (LBV). The LBV group showed gross pallor of the substantia nigra, greater neuron loss in the locus ceruleus, substantia nigra, and substantia innominata, lower neocortical ChAT levels, and fewer midfrontal tangles than did the pure AD group, along with a high incidence of medial temporal lobe spongiform vacuolization. Catecholamine neurons in the brainstem of the reptile Caiman crocodilus.

Immunohistochemical methods were used to map the distribution of neurons exhibiting tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity (TH) in the brainstem of the reptile Caiman crocodilus. The results reveal that many catecholamine systems previously described in mammalian and avian species are present in the brainstem of the caiman. Within the medulla, many immunoreactive neurons surround the central canal. This neuronal field extends rostrally to the level of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus. Many TH neurons overlap the region of the solitary nucleus, and an extensive system of fibers derived

Effects of unilateral and bilateral cochlea removal on 2-deoxyglucose patterns in the chick auditory system.

The 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) method was used to map functional activity in the auditory system of chicks that had been subjected to unilateral or bilateral cochlea removal. Following survival times of 1 day to 4 weeks, chicks were exposed to continuous white noise in the 2DG experiments. In monaural subjects nucleus angularis and nucleus magnocellularis showed faint 2DG uptake on the side contralateral to the intact ear. In the binaural nucleus laminaris, the asymmetrical and almost mirror-imaged labeling pattern (Lippe, Stewart, and Rubel: Brain Res. 196:43-58, '80) was produced. The superior oli

The organization of neurons in the nucleus of the lateral lemniscus projecting to the superior and inferior colliculi in the rat.

The topographic organization of neurons in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) which project to the superior and inferior colliculi was studied using the retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and the fluorescent double labeling methods. Neurons projecting to the superior colliculus (SC) are situated in the rostral portion of the DNLL, whereas those to the inferior colliculus (IC) are found in the caudal area of this nucleus. These two portions are completely separated from each other and no neurons projecting to both the SC and the IC are observed. In the dorsolateral part of

Mania resulting from brain stem tumor.

Mania usually represents one extreme of recurrent affective illness in patients with a genetic predisposition. Mania or hypomania is not generally known to signal the presence of an occult neoplasm; however, this possibility should be considered. The authors describe a 55-year-old man without personal or family history of affective disease whose manic behavior precipitated diagnosis of a metastatic mesencephalic tumor.

The effects of acute and chronic morphine on regional distribution of cardiac output in brain.

Both acute and chronic administration of morphine resulted in an increase in the percent cardiac output received by brain. However, various brain regions were affected differently by the drug treatments. The greatest increases in percent cardiac output received after chronic administration of morphine occurred in pons and cerebellum, while the greatest increases after acute administration occurred in cortex and midbrain. The changes found are in contrast with earlier studies which suggest that morphine has no effect on cerebral blood flow.

Acetylcholinesterase activity in rat brain: effect of acute cyanide intoxication.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, hypothalamus, midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata of mature male rats was determined in control and cyanide-treated animals by a spectrophotometric method. Compared with control, cyanide-treated animals showed significant increases in the AChE activity of the cerrebral cortex, hippocampus and midbrain. This finding suggests an involvement of brain AChE in acute cyanide toxicity.

Jaw reflexes and masseter electromyograms in mesencephalic and pontine lesions: an electrodiagnostic study.

Jaw reflexes and masseter electromyograms were studied in five patients with mesencephalic and 11 patients with pontine lesions, vascular or tumorous in nature. In the former group jaw reflexes were abnormal, being delayed or absent, whereas masseter electromyograms were normal. In the latter group, both jaw reflexes and masseter EMG, showing denervation, were abnormal in six and both normal in five cases. It is suggested that the afferent limb of the human jaw reflex passes through the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus. The methods proved to be valuable in the diagnosis of mesencephalic and po

A de novo variant in ADGRL2 suggests a novel mechanism underlying the previously undescribed association of extreme microcephaly with severely reduced sulcation and rhombencephalosynapsis.

Adgrl2 immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization revealed expression in the telencephalon, mesencephalon and rhombencephalon of mouse and chicken embryos. In human brain embryos and fœtuses, Adgrl2 immunoreactivity was observed in the hemispheric and cerebellar germinal zones, the cortical plate, basal ganglia, pons and cerebellar cortex. The patient s diabetes mellitus deteriorated with ketoacidosis that needed increased doses of insulin. His condition worsened and he developed partial motor seizures. A model three-dimensional culture system for mammalian dopaminergic precursor cells: application for functional intracerebral transplantation.

Grafts of fetal neural tissue, rich in dopamine (DA) neurons, have previously been shown to improve the symptoms of parkinsonism, both in humans and in animal models. In order to circumvent some of the problems associated with cell transplant therapy, such as the limited availability of transplant tissue, we have established a reaggregate (three-dimensional) tissue culture system that can be used to proliferate normal mammalian neuronal precursors. We demonstrate the in vitro growth of DA-neuronal precursors derived from embryonic porcine ventral mesencephalon, Carnegie stages 15-18. Cultures …

Fetal posterior cerebral artery infarction due to carotid dissection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fetal posterior cerebral artery is an anatomical variant that occurs in 23-29% of the population. In this variant, posterior circulation, especially to the occipital lobe and mesencephalon, is provided by the posterior communicating artery. Whether fetal posterior cerebral artery constitutes a risk factor for ischemic stroke is still controversial. Our aim was to describe an exceptional case of ischemic stroke due to internal carotid artery dissection in a patient with fetal posterior cerebral artery anatomical variant. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old North African male patient p…

[Update on central oculomotor disorders and nystagmus].

The diagnosis of ocular motor disorders and the different forms of a nystagmus is based on a systematic clinical examination of all types of … bilateral floccular lesion or dysfunction, or upbeat nystagmus, which is caused by a lesion in the mesencephalon or medulla oblongata. Examples of pharmacotherapy are the use of 4-aminopyridine for downbeat and upbeat nystagmus, memantine or gabapentin for fixation pendular nystagmus or baclofen for periodic alternating nystagmus.
