OBJECTIVES: Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), adult dermatomyositis, and polymyositis (PM) are idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) characterized by muscle infiltration and specific muscle fiber alterations. They are thought to have an autoimmune etiology, but triggering factors, and how immunologic attack induces muscle weakness, remain unknown.
