The Sarcoptes scabiei Kazal-type inhibitor SsKaSPI exhibits elastase-inhibitory activity and modulates neutrophil extracellular trap formation.

Scabies, caused by the ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, is a contagious zoonotic disease that poses a significant global health burden. The emergence of drug resistance and the lack of effective vaccines underscore the urgent need for novel molecular targets. In this study, we characterized a novel Kazal-type serine protease inhibitor from S. scabiei (SsKaSPI). Immunofluorescence assays localized native SsKaSPI within the mite body and throughout the infested host skin, suggesting that SsKaSPI may be released into host tissues and act at the host-parasite interface. In an in vitro PMA-ind

The role of web sharing, species recognition and host-plant defence in interspecific competition between two herbivorous mite species.

When competing with indigenous species, invasive species face a problem, because they typically start with a few colonizers. Evidently, some species succeeded, begging an answer to the question how they invade. Here, we investigate how the invasive spider mite Tetranychus evansi interacts with the indigenous species T. urticae when sharing the solanaceous host plant tomato: do they choose to live together or to avoid each other's colonies? Both species spin protective, silken webs on the leaf surfaces, under which they live in groups of con- and possibly heterospecifics. In Spain, T. evansi in

Do herbivore-induced plant volatiles influence predator migration and local dynamics of herbivorous and predatory mites?

If predators lack information on the prey's position, prey have more chance to escape predation and will therefore reach higher population densities. One of the many possible cues that predators may use to find their prey are herbivore-induced plant volatiles. Although their effects on the behaviour of foraging predators have been well studied, little is known about how these prey-related odours affect predator-prey dynamics on a plant. We hypothesise that herbivore-induced plant volatiles provide the major cue eliciting predator arrestment on prey-infested leaves and that the response to thes

Behavior and development of Tetranychus ludeni Zacher, 1913 (Acari: Tetranychidae) and physiological stress in genetically modified cotton expressing Cry1F and Cry1Ac proteins.

Genetically modified plants are one of the tactics used in integrated pest management - IPM. There is great concern about the impact of these plants on non-target organisms. On the other hand, there is little information in the literature on the effects of transgenics (Bacillus thuringiensis) Bt on populations of phytophagous mites, and the physiological responses that this attack promotes on plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the biology of the T. ludeni mite in Bt cotton, expressing the Cry1F and Cry1Ac proteins. To evaluate the behavior of food and oviposition preference of

Usefulness of estimated surface area of damaged skin as a proxy of mite load in the monitoring of sarcoptic mange in free-ranging populations of Iberian wild goat, Capra pyrenaica.

In this study we examined the influence of several factors, like the surface of skin with lesions attributable to Sarcoptes scabiei, the time of year and host sex and age on variations of mite load in Iberian wild goats, Capra pyrenaica, from the Sierra Nevada Natural Space, southern Spain. As well, the surface area of skin with scabietic lesions estimated during field surveys were compared with measurements taken in the laboratory and the potential for using categories based on surface areas estimated during monitoring and management programs was analyzed. The surface area of the skin lesions

Comparative study of doramectin and fipronil in the treatment of equine chorioptic mange.

In equids, chorioptic mange is a common dermatitis for which there are no licensed medications in the uk. Doramectin and fipronil are licensed for the control of ectoparasites in other species and were evaluated for the treatment of 17 cases of chorioptic mange in 13 equids. Equids were included if clinical findings were indicative of chorioptic mange, chorioptes mites were positively identified and concurrent disease that could affect response to disease was not evident. A random number table was used to allocate subjects to receive doramectin (group D, eight animals) or fipronil (group F, ni

A P450-mediated trade-off: Terpenoid metabolism comes at the cost of pest resistance in Pleurotus ostreatus.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) core catalytic regulators of secondary metabolism and biotic stress defense across plants and fungi. The fungivore mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae is a major pest of cultivated mushrooms, but the molecular basis of fungal defense against this fungivore remains poorly understood. Here, we functionally identified and systematically characterized PoCYP5152C8, a CYP504 subfamily P450 gene from Pleurotus ostreatus that is transcriptionally responsive to mite infestation stress. Overexpression of PoCYP5152C8 in P. ostreatus increased mite survival, egg hatching,

Functional characterization of Niemann-Pick proteins type C2 as odorant carriers in Neoseiulus barkeri olfactory perception.

Arthropods utilize olfactory function to detect informational substances within their natural habitats, thereby facilitating essential life activities such as foraging, mating, and oviposition. Niemann-Pick protein type C2 (NPC2), a putative odorant carrier, has not been fully described in the olfactory perception of predatory mites. In this study, we characterized in detail the olfactory perception functions of NbNPC2-2 and NbNPC2-3 in the important predatory mite Neoseiulus barkeri. The results show that 2 NPC2 proteins, with 6 conserved cysteine sites, are significantly upregulated (by 2.93

Digamasellid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) in association with saproxylic darkling beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and wood-decaying fungi (Polyporales) in Slovakia.

Three species of digamasellid mites adapted to life in wood-decaying polypore fungi and phoretically associated with saproxylic and fungivorous beetles of the family Tenebrionidae are described from adult and deutonymphal stages from forest habitats in Slovakia. Two of the mites are described as new species: Bulbolaelaps neomidae sp. nov., the second member of the genus, whose developmental stages were previously unknown, is specifically associated with the tinder fungus Fomes fomentarius (L.) Fr., and its deutonymphs are phoretically dispersed by the beetle Neomida haemorrhoidalis (Fabricius)

Immune mechanisms in human Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) infestations.

Scabies is a parasitic infestation of human and animal skin caused by different strains of the itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared scabies in human as a neglected tropical disease, and today over 200 million people worldwide are affected. The two most commonly reported clinical manifestation of the condition are ordinary (OS) and crusted scabies (CS). CS, which can lead to fatal consequences due to secondary bacterial infections, is mostly observed in immunocompromised subjects but can also, although rarely, be detected in immunocompetent individuals.

Survival and plant-prey finding by Neoseiulus fallacis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on soil substrates after aerial dispersal.

In a greenhouse and in an open field, aspects of aerial and ambulatory dispersal of the phytoseiid mite. Neoseiulus fallacis (Garman) were studied with a focus on events that would occur after aerially dispersing mites had landed on soil or associated substrates. We measured recovery of predators on lima bean plants (Phaseolus lunatus L.) that were infested with the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch. Factors thought to affect movement and colonization were distance to a receiver unit from a release (landing) point, intervening soil surfaces such as clods, gravel, fine soil and

A Retrospective Report on the Infestation and Distribution of Chiggers on an Endemic Rodent Species (Apodemus latronum) in Southwest China.

Chiggers are the exclusive vector of Orientia tsutsugamushi, which is the causative agent of scrub typhus. Based on the field surveys in southwest China between 2001 and 2022, this paper retrospectively reported the chigger infestation and distribution on the large-eared field mouse (Apodemus latronum), an endemic rodent species in the region, for the first time. A total of 933 chiggers were collected from 501 mice, and these chiggers were identified as 2 families, 8 genera, and 61 species. The overall infestation prevalence (PM) and mean abundance (MA) of A. latronum with chiggers reached 19.

Expression and functional analysis of Niemann-Pick C2 gene in Phytoseiulus persimilis.

As a new protein class of semiochemical binding and transporting, Niemann-Pick proteins type C2 (NPC2) in arthropods have received more attentions in recent decade. However, the gene function has not been studied in phytoseiid mites with biocontrol potential. In the current study, we cloned a NPC2 gene PpNPC2a from the transcriptome of Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot. By encoding 181 amino acids with a conserved ML domain, PpNPC2a was found a homolog of NPC2-1 in Galendromus occidentalis Nesbitt. We then measured the spatio-temporal expression of PpNPC2a in P. persimilis, and found the

Development of Conventional and Real-Time Quantitative PCR Assays for Diagnosis and Monitoring of Scabies.

Scabies remains the most prevalent, endemic, and neglected ectoparasitic infestation globally and can cause institutional outbreaks. The sensitivity of routine microscopy for demonstration of Sarcoptes scabiei mites or eggs in skin scrapings is only about 50%. Except for three studies using conventional or two-tube nested PCR on a small number of cases, no systematic study has been performed to improve the laboratory diagnosis of this important infection. We developed a conventional and a real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) g

Mite vectors (Acari: Trombiculidae) of scrub typhus in a new endemic area in northern Kyoto, Japan.

Between 1983 and 1999, 27 human cases of scrub typhus (two fatal) occurred in the Nodagawa River basin of northern Kyoto, Japan, an area where no cases had been previously reported. Antibody screening of infected patients' sera showed that nine of 15 patients had high titers against the Gilliam type of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi). To determine the vector mite transmitting the disease, we studied rodent and chigger populations in and near a rice field alongside the Nodagawa River between 1996 and 1999. The most common rodent species was Microtus montebelli (Milne-Edwards), representing 73.

[Exposure status of East and West German households with house dust mites and fungi].

The interrelation between biological pollution of indoor spaces and health disorders, allergic symptoms and health issues in general is well known. Besides animal epithelia, the exposure to house dust mites and mould fungi is considered a serious risk factor. In the scope of a comparative study involving school beginners in East and West Germany (launched in 1991), dust was vacuumed from a total of 218 mattresses of children's beds and checked for their content of house dust mites and mould fungi. This investigation aimed at assessing the degree of exposure, to determine regional differences,
