The authors studied distribution of antigens HLA A, B, C in 115 children and of antigens HLA DR in 102 children of the Russian nationality with classic or diagnosed juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). A considerable rise in indices of chemoluminescence (CL) of the whole blood in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis was noted. A correlation of CL with clinico-laboratory indices of the disease activity was revealed. The highest level of CL was observed in the articulovisceral form and in the maximum degree of the disease activity. There was a significant difference in CL intensity in the minimum degree of the disease activity and remission of the pathological process.

Some new substrates--RNA-VPg, RNA-peptide and a small fragment of RNA peptide--labelled at the peptide component with [125I]Bolton-Hunter reagent have been proposed for use in the isolation and characterization of the enzyme hydrolyzing the phosphodiester bond between the VPg protein and encephalomyocarditis virus RNA. A novel procedure for the analysis of the specific enzyme activity is based on thin-layer chromatography of hydrolytic products on silicagel or polyethylenimine cellulose. The molecular mass of the enzyme isolated by a modified procedure involving FPLC is 90-95 kD.

Single-stranded DNA-binding protein (SSB-protein) has been purified and characterized from Ehrlich ascite tumour (EAT) cells. The purification procedure was performed in analytical and preparative variants. The alimentary deficiency of vitamin A causes marked shifts in the metabolism of GSH: the levels of GSH, GSSG and cysteine in the liver increase, while the activities of glutathione-S-transferase (using glycerol as substrate) and gamma-glutamyltransferase in the liver show a rise. At the same time, vitamin A deficiency causes a decrease of the glutathione peroxidase and catalase activity in the liver. The data obtained are discussed in terms of the role of GSH and enzymes of GSH metabolism in the protection of cells against the damaging influence of lipid peroxidation.

A procedure for measuring the activity of tyrosine-specific protein kinases was developed. The method is based on the fact that the phosphoryl groups of phosphotyrosine residues of phosphorylated protein substrates are not hydrolyzed in alkaline solutions, whereas the phosphoserine and phosphothreonine residues lose their phosphoryl groups upon heating in 2 N KOH. It was demonstrated that rat sarcoma XC cells in culture and in solid tumours contain tyrosine-specific protein kinase (TPK). Aminasine was found to repress tubulin polymerization into microtubules. This process is associated with the formation of anomalous structures--aggregates which contain, except tubulin, an increased amount of microtubule-associating proteins. The effect of aminasine on microtubules is specific, since it can be observed both in vitro and in vivo. Aminasine seems to be a helpful tool in studying the functions of tubulin and microtubules.

It was shown that rat blood plasma contains two enzymes that inactivate alkaloids by transforming them into N-oxides. Both enzymes are hemoproteins: one of them consists of three different polypeptides with Mr of 63, 35 and 12 kD, while the other one is a single polypeptide with Mr of 73 kD.
