Effects of disease causing mutations on the essential motions in proteins.

This study embodies a detailed comparative analysis of the essential motions of the Wild type and the eight different disease mutant forms of the Human CYP1b1. The mutations considered in this study have been implicated in Primary Congenital Glaucoma, an in-born, genetic disorder associated with eye-abnormality. The principal component analysis for Wild type and the Mutants was carried out using the stabilized molecular dynamics trajectories, which ranged from 35 to 45 nanoseconds. Investigations revealed the nature of the collective motions that characterize functionally relevant 'essential m…

The amblyopic deficit for global motion is spatial scale invariant.

Humans with amblyopia display anomalous performance for global motion discrimination. Attempts have been made to rule out an explanation based solely on the visibility loss in lower visual areas. However, it remains a possibility that the altered scale over which local motion is processed in V1 might lead to reduced efficiency of global motion processing in extra-striate cortex. We use stimuli composed of spatial frequency bandpass elements, equated for visibility, to show that the global motion deficit in amblyopia for both fellow and amblyopic eyes is still present once impairments in low-le…

Induced motion in depth and the effects of vergence eye movements.

Induced motion is the false impression that physically stationary objects move when in the presence of other objects that really move. In this study, we investigated this motion illusion in the depth dimension. We raised three related questions, as follows: (1) What cues in the stimulus are responsible for this motion illusion in depth? (2) Is the size of this illusion affected by vergence eye movements? And (3) are the effects of eye movements different for motion in depth and for motion in the frontoparallel plane? To answer these questions, we measured the point of subjective stationarity. …

Mobile computation: spatiotemporal integration of the properties of objects in motion.

We demonstrate that, as an object moves, color and motion signals from successive, widely spaced locations are integrated, but letter and digit shapes are not. The features that integrate as an object moves match those that integrate when the eyes move but the object is stationary (spatiotopic integration). We suggest that this integration is mediated by large receptive fields gated by attention and that it occurs for surface features (motion and color) that can be summed without precise alignment but not shape features (letters or digits) that require such alignment. Rapidly alternating pairs…

Molecular crowding inhibits intramolecular breathing motions in proteins.

In aqueous solution some proteins undergo large-scale movements of secondary structures, subunits or domains, referred to as protein "breath … consistent with a model of structural fluctuations in which secondary structures undergo rigid-body motions relative to one another. This motion increases with decreasing protein concentration or increasing temperature. Analysis of a set of five structurally and functionally diverse proteins reveals a diversity of kinetic behaviors. Proteins with multipl …

Static progressive splinting for restoration of rotational motion of the forearm.

This study examined the use of a bidirectional, patient-directed orthosis that used the principles of static progressive stress to improve forearm rotation. Thirty-eight patients who had limited pronation and supination motions after injuries and who failed other physical therapy techniques underwent a 30- to 60-minute stretching protocol with the orthosis one to three times per day. The mean arc of rotation increased by 42 degrees (range, 0-122) after a mean treatment duration of 12 weeks (range, 3-57). The mean patient satisfaction score was 8.1 points on a scale of 0-10 points. All of the p…

Motion sickness: effect of the magnitude of roll and pitch oscillation.

BACKGROUND: Rotational oscillation in roll and pitch can cause motion sickness, but it is not known how sickness depends on the magnitude of rotational oscillation or whether there is a difference between the two axes of motion. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that motion sickness would increase similarly with increasing magnitudes of roll and pitch oscillation. METHOD: There were 120 subjects (6 groups of 20 subjects) who were exposed to 30 min of 0.2-Hz sinusoidal roll or pitch oscillation at 1 of 3 magnitudes: 1) +/- 1.830; 2) +/- 3.66 degrees; or 3) +/- 7.32 degrees. Subjects sitting in …

A case of impaired verbalization but preserved gesticulation of motion events.

In most cultures, most of the time, when people talk they gesture. We took advantage of a rare opportunity to explore the relation between the verbalization and gesticulation of motion events by studying Marcel, an English speaker with a unilateral left-hemisphere lesion affecting frontal, parietal, and temporal sectors of the perisylvian cortex. Marcel has intact semantic knowledge of the three major classes of words that are commonly used in English descriptions of motion events - specifically, concrete nouns, action verbs, and spatial prepositions - as well as intact syntactic knowledge of …

Reproducibility of the measurement of active and passive cervical range of motion.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to assess the reproducibility of tests for the active and passive range of motion used in the physical examination for patients with neck pain. The secondary aim was to determine whether the history of the patients influences the reproducibility and the prevalence of positive findings. METHODS: Sixty-nine participants were recruited in 3 physical therapy practices. Two examiners independently performed a physical examination on all participants. The examiners were blinded for patient characteristics (neck pain/no neck pain) and each other's finding…

Effect of sporting activity practice on susceptibility to motion sickness.

The theory of visuo-vestibular conflict is the most commonly accepted to explain motion sickness. Visual, vestibular and proprioceptive afferences are involved in balance control and this function can be improved by physical and sporting activities (PSA). The purpose of the present survey was to investigate the relationships between motion sickness susceptibility (MSS) in adulthood and PSA, and especially proprioceptive PSA. A questionnaire concerning MSS and PSA was filled in by 1829 students (22.3+/-3.4 years of age, 799 males). Subjects having practised a sport before the age of 18 have les…

Motion sickness preceded by unstable displacements of the center of pressure.

We exposed standing participants to optic flow in a moving room. Motion sickness was induced by motion that simulated the amplitude and frequency of standing sway. We identified instabilities in displacements of the center of pressure among participants who became sick; these instabilities occurred before the onset of subjective motion sickness symptoms. Postural differences between Sick and Well participants were observed before exposure to the nauseogenic stimulus. During exposure to the nauseogenic stimulus, sway increased for participants who became sick but also for those who did not. How…

Non-invasive evaluation of face and motion perception in humans.

The neural mechanisms for the perception of face and motion were studied using psychophysical threshold measurements, event-related potentials (ERPs), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A face-specific ERP component, N170, was recorded over the posterior temporal cortex. Removal of the high-spatial-frequency components of the face altered the perception of familiar faces significantly, and familiarity can facilitate the cortico-cortical processing of facial perceptions. Similarly, the high-spatial-frequency components of the face seemed to be crucial for the recognition of facia…

Effects of laminectomy and facetectomy on the stability of the lumbar motion segment.

A ligamentous, nonlinear, sliding contact, three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of L2-L3 complex was developed to investigate the bio … nulus stress. Results show that total laminectomy with facetectomy induces considerable increase in motion and annulus stress, except for lateral bending, whereas unilateral laminectomy shows the least increases.

Motion versus position in the perception of head-centred movement.

Abstract. Observers can recover motion with respect to the head during an eye movement by comparing signals encoding retinal motion and the velocity of pursuit. Evidently there is a mismatch between these signals because perceived head-centred motion is not always veridical. One example is the Filehne illusion, in which a stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction to pursuit. Like the motion aftereffect, the phenomenal experience of the Filehne illusion is one in which the stimulus moves but does not seem to go anywhere. This raises problems when measuring the illusion by moti…

Effect of magnitude and direction of horizontal oscillation on motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Various types of motion and visual scene can cause motion sickness, but sickness in land transport seems to be often associated with variations in horizontal acceleration. If horizontal oscillation causes sickness, it seems reasonable to assume that greater amounts of motion (i.e., an increased magnitude of motion or an increased duration of motion) will increase the extent of the sickness. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that the magnitude, direction, and duration of horizontal oscillation would affect the sickness experienced by subjects. METHOD: The 144 subjects were exposed t…

Cortical representation of inward and outward radial motion in man.

We have used positron emission tomography to investigate the cortical areas of the normal human brain involved in processing inward (Expansion) and outward (Contraction) radial motion simulated with an optic flow stimulus. The optical flow display was made out of dots moving radially away from or toward the center of the display monitor. In the Control condition, the dots' motion was randomized in order to remove any sensation of radial motion. In the Expansion condition, several loci of activation were observed: visual areas V2-V3 and the superior parietal lobule (BA 7), predominantly in the …

Mechanics of Coriolis stimulus and inducing factors of motion sickness.

To specify inducing factors of motion sickness comprised in Coriolis stimulus, or cross-coupled rotation, the sensation of rotation derived from the semicircular canal system during and after Coriolis stimulus under a variety of stimulus conditions, was estimated by an approach from mechanics with giving minimal hypotheses and simplifications on the semicircular canal system and the sensory nervous system. By solving an equation of motion of the endolymph during Coriolis stimulus, rotating angle of the endolymph was obtained, and the sensation of rotation derived from each semicircular canal w…

Effects of glaucoma and aging on photopic and scotopic motion perception.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of primary open-angle glaucoma and normal aging on visual sensitivity for targets known to bias responses fr … ighting. RESULTS: Across a wide range of conditions, the ability to detect and discriminate visual motion declined significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing age, whereas the ability to detect stationary patterns was generally unaffected. The rate of decline was adequately described by a simple linear function. Control studies showed that the age-related …

Effects of vestibular cerebellum lesion on motion sickness in rats.

The importance of the vestibular apparatus in the development of motion sickness is widely accepted, although the role of the vestibular cerebellum remains controversial. We examined the effects of vestibular cerebellum lesion on the development of motion sickness in rats. Rats do not vomit, but the behaviour known as "pica", the eating of non-nutritive substances, such as kaolin, can be used as an index of motion sickness. A 2 h load of hypergravity induced pica in rats, indicating that they suffered from motion sickness. Pica was induced by hypergravity load even after surgical lesion to the…
