Impact of low-grade adverse events on health-related quality of life in adult patients receiving imatinib or nilotinib for newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myelogenous leukemia in chronic phase.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment relies on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), but their use can be associated with low-grade adverse events (AEs). This analysis aimed to identify the low-grade AEs which significantly impact the Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of CML patients in chronic phase (CP) and to compare the incidence of such AEs among nilotinib- and imatinib-treated patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the 48 month ENESTnd trial were used (N = 593 patients). HRQoL was assessed using generic (SF-36) and leukemia-specific (FACT-Leu) HRQoL surveys. A

Extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease.

Extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease are prevalent in both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The most common manifestations involve the musculoskeletal and dermatologic systems. Other manifestations involve the hepatopan-creatobiliary system (eg, primary sclerosing cholangitis) as well as the ocular, renal, and pulmonary systems. A multidisciplinary team approach is often needed for effective management, and emergency situations require prompt evaluation.

Traumatic Orthopaedic Injuries in the Prison Population.

UNLABELLED: The United States has the highest population of inmates in the world (per capita and total). Musculoskeletal disorders are included within the 10 most frequent medical reports of prisoners; however, the literature about them is limited. The purpose of this study is to describe the epidemiology and complications of traumatic musculoskeletal injuries. To our knowledge, this is the first report of musculoskeletal trauma and complications in the prison population. METHODS: A list of all traumatic orthopaedic injuries and complications, except for spine, was sent to the billing contrac

Clinical comorbidity in patients with osteoarthritis: a case-control study of general practice consulters in England and Wales.

OBJECTIVES: To determine patterns of clinical comorbidity in general practice consulters with OA and compare them with comorbidity in consulters without OA. METHODS: A case-control study nested in a one-year prevalence survey of consultations in 60 general practices in England and Wales. Cases were 11 375 subjects aged 50 and over who had consulted with OA during the study year. Controls were 11 780 subjects matched for age and sex who had consulted during the study year, but not for OA. Morbidity outcomes were based on a standard clinical classification system. RESULTS: After adjusting for

Approach to Joint Pain in Children.

It is not uncommon in pediatric clinical practice to encounter children with musculoskeletal symptoms. A number of disparate conditions can present with joint complaints in children. In this article, the author describes the clinical approach to a child presenting with joint complaints. A detailed clinical history, including the family history, along with a complete physical examination can provide vital clues to the underlying condition in most cases. A structured screening examination of the musculoskeletal system that has been recently developed (i.e., pGALS) is also discussed. It is also p…

Updates in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal interventions.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK-US) has evolved from a diagnostic tool into a key modality for guiding minimally invasive interventions across the musculoskeletal system. Its real-time imaging, portability, and absence of ionizing radiation make it a cost-effective and safe alternative to fluoroscopy and CT for numerous procedures, including biopsies, aspirations, injections, and percutaneous releases. Recent technological advances in ultrasound, including high-frequency probes, microvascular imaging, needle-tracking systems, and robotic probe steering, have improved precision and expanded its…

Risk Factors, Clinical Characteristics, Management, and Outcomes of Musculoskeletal Fungal Infection at Thailand's Largest National Tertiary Referral Center.

To investigate the risk factors, clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of musculoskeletal fungal infection in Thai patients, patients aged ≥18 years definitively diagnosed with musculoskeletal fungal infection by culture and/or histopathology at Siriraj Hospital (Bangkok, Thailand) during 2002-2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Twenty-eight patients (median age: 58.5 years [range: 22-81], 57.1% male) with fungal osteomyelitis (n = 22), septic arthritis (n = 1), or fungal osteomyelitis with septic arthritis (n = 5) were included. Immunocompromised status was common (82%). Most pat

Combination of Polymeric Supports and Drug Delivery Systems for Osteochondral Regeneration.

Musculoskeletal conditions have been defined by European National Health systems as one of the key themes which should be featured during the present decade as a consequence of the significant healthcare and social support costs. Among others, articular cartilage degeneration due to traumatic and degenerative lesion injury or other pathologies commonly results in the development of musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis and arthritis rheumatoid, eventually leading to progressive articular cartilage and joint destruction especially at osteochondral interphase, that account for more di

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: imaging features beyond the chest.

The purpose of this pictorial review is to illustrate the various imaging findings of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Manifestations of cardiac, central nervous system, head and neck, musculoskeletal, abdominal, genitourinary, and breast tuberculosis will be discussed. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis presents a difficult diagnostic challenge for the radiologist and requires a high index of suspicion, particularly in high-risk populations.

Weight Loss Before Basic Combat Training and Musculoskeletal Injuries Among U.S. Army Trainees: The ARMI Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between weight loss before joining the U.S. Army and rates of musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) during physically demanding Basic Combat Training (BCT). METHODS: Self-reported weight loss was collected on 3168 Army trainees who were followed through electronic medical records for diagnosis of any and region-specific MSKI. Cox regression models were stratified by sex and COVID-19 pandemic and adjusted for age, height, maximum-ever BMI, race/ethnicity, smoking history, prior physical activity, and history of injury. RESULTS: A total of 829 trainees (26.16%

Musculoskeletal evaluation in severe haemophilia A patients from Latin America.

There is a paucity of literature on haemophilia treatment in Latin American countries, a region characterized by rapidly improving systems of care, but with substantial disparities in treatment between countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the musculoskeletal status of haemophilia patients from Latin America and to examine the relationship between musculoskeletal status and treatment practices across countries. The Committee of Latin America on the Therapeutics of Inhibitor Groups conducted a survey of its member country representatives on key aspects of haemophilia treatment in 10
