Herein we present a nasopharyngeal myiasis case by Cephenemyia stimulator in a roe deer hunted in Trás-os-Montes (NE Portugal). Preliminary inspection showed one larva sorting through the nostrils and the examination of the nasopharyngeal cavity showed more than 15 larvae in the glottis and retropharyngeal recesses. Four larvae were collected and stored into 70% ethanol for morphological and molecular identification. Three of the larvae were identified as third instars and the other one as a prepupa of Cephenemyia stimulator, being the first confirmation of this species in roe deer from Portug…

BACKGROUND: A gruesome infection was found in a woman with advanced lung tumor and associated malnutrition. Worldwide, bacteremia with Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica was only found in 13 cases yet.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is the first case in Austria and the first case without infestation of maggots.
CONCLUSIONS: This germ is an emerging human pathogen not only in patients with poor personal hygiene, difficult social circumstances, alcohol dependence or chronic wounds. It must be included in the differential diagnosis of immunocompromised patients with pneumonia.

The public health importance of myiasis [infestation with dipterous (fly) larvae] remains unknown. This disease is spread worldwide in animals and humans, but baseline data on its prevalence are limited. In particular, knowledge on human urogenital myiasis (UGM) is scattered. As such, a systematic search was undertaken of five English and five Persian databases for publications describing UGM cases in English or Persian published between 1975 and 2017. In total, 45 papers reporting 59 UGM cases from various regions of the world are included in this review. All included papers were from the Eng…

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial myiases can be an important condition from a public health perspective. However, cases of this condition reported in regional and worldwide biomedical literature are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: A case of nosocomial myiasis is reported from Costa Rica, where the species involved was Lucilia cuprina (Diptera: Calliphoridae).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 91-year-old patient with signs of immunosuppression, severe impairment of lung function, and mechanical ventilation presented larvae in both nostrils on the seventh day after admission. Five specimens were collected and processed fo…

Primary oral myiasis due to Chrysomya bezziana is a rare condition caused by invasion of tissues by larvae of the flies. A case of Oral myiasis is presented in a 12 year old boy with neuro-degenerative disease with seizures. Intra orally, a soft tissue pocket in the left buccal mucosa and a pocket under the palatal mucosa was seen containing maggots. Extra orally indurated erythematous swelling was present near the commissure of the mouth. Predisposing factors identified in the present case were mouth breathing, incompetent lips, low socioeconomic condition, malnutrition, and inability of the …

The term myiasis is applied to the injurious action that larvae of certain diptera cause to the organism of vertebrate animals in the living or dead tissue in which they grow. Because of its great destructive potential, appropriate and preventative treatment are necessary. Among the sites of infestation, the human mouth is a common site, mainly in tropical countries. We present two cases of oral myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax spp. Ivermectin is an extremely effective semi-synthetic macrolides, in the treatment of this condition.

Human myiasis is a parasitosis found in tropical and underdeveloped countries. It usually affects the elderly, unhealthy and mentally disabled individuals. It is caused by dipterous that lay their eggs in necrotic or infected tissues, although areas of the body that are apparently healthy can also be affected. Frequently the fly deposits several eggs on the peripheral parts of scratches and wounds. The treatment of myiasis involves mechanical removal of the larvae with hemostatic pincers. Larvae rupture must be avoided. Application of topical ether or similar volatile substance is useful. Prev…

This study reports the molecular characterization of the mtDNA control region (called the A+T-rich region in insects) of five dipteran species which cause myiasis: Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel, Cochliomyia macellaria Fabricius, Chrysomya megacephala Fabricius, Lucilia eximia Wiedemann (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Dermatobia hominis Linnaeus Jr (Diptera: Oestridae). The control region in these species varies in length from 1000 to 1600 bp. Two structural domains with specific evolutionary patterns were identified. These were (1) conserved sequence blocks containing primary sequence motifs, …

The aim of the present investigation was to get further information about obligate aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacterial communities of the intact and Wohlfahrtia magnifica infested vulval region of sheep. The numbers of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic microorganisms were lower in samples taken from uninfested mucous membrane and myiatic wounds as well as in the wound fluid as compared to samples originating from the uninfested skin surface. Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae were isolated only from the skin and mucous membrane of uninfested sheep. Gr

The prophylactic efficacy of ivermectin against navel or scrotal myiasis in calves was evaluated in eight trials in Argentina and Brazil. In two trials, calves were injected subcutaneously with ivermectin at a dosage of at least 200 microg kg(-1) within 24 h of birth. In the other six trials, two with two-month-old calves and four with four-month-old or older calves, all calves were treated with ivermectin at a dosage of at least 200 microg kg(-1) immediately after castration. In all trials, calves were maintained together on pasture and naturally exposed to Cochliomyia hominivorax. Navel and …

Furuncular cutaneous myiasis can closely mimic common bacterial abscesses, especially in regions where Dermatobia hominis is not endemic. Here, we present a case of a healthy six-year-old male who returned from a Caribbean cruise and developed four painful nodules on his scalp and arm that were initially presumed to be bacterial abscesses. Incision and drainage yielded little to no purulence. Operative exploration under general anesthesia revealed four intact D. hominis larvae, all of which were successfully extracted. This case underscores the importance of obtaining a travel history and cons…

The emergence of xylazine-associated wounds, highlighted by case reports from Philadelphia in 2022, has been linked to the use of this veter … l exposure and delayed wound care. Furthermore, it is essential to distinguish between uncontrolled myiasis (spontaneous, unsanitary maggot infestation) and the therapeutic application of sterile Lucilia sericata larvae through medically supervised larval therapy. Building on historical observations and contemporary wound care literature, we explore how l …

BACKGROUND: Human nasal myiasis is a rare zoonotic infection caused by Oestrus ovis with a non-specific clinical presentation that can mimic more common conditions such as allergic rhinitis.
OBJECTIVE: To report a series of nasal myiasis cases in immunocompetent individuals, emphasizing the clinical presentation and complementary investigations (endoscopic findings, parasitological identification, skin prick tests, and imaging studies) that facilitate differential diagnosis from allergic rhinitis and enable early treatment.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including cases of nasal…

Tracheostomal myiasis, the infestation of a tracheostomy site by fly larvae, is an uncommon and challenging condition, with limited cases reported in the medical literature. This case report aims to describe both the clinical presentation and management of tracheostomal myiasis in a patient with multiple comorbidities. The patient presented with foul-smelling discharge and visible maggots at the tracheostomy site. Management involved manual removal of larvae, surgical debridement, irrigation with iodine solution, and sealing the stoma with paraffin ointment. This case highlights the need for c…
