Experiences of continued presence: On the practical consequences of 'hallucinations' in bereavement.

OBJECTIVES: We document the properties of experiences of continued presence (ECPs) helping to resolve controversies about their significance. METHOD: We used qualitative methods in data collection and analysis. This enabled us to document the properties of ECPs. Narrative biographic interviews were carried out with 17 bereaved informants, and conversation analysis was used to identify the sources of meaning and functions of these experiences. RESULTS: Our informants heard voices of the deceased, saw their images, felt their touch, and sometimes felt their presence unspecified in any of the s

'And then one day he'd shot himself. Then I was really shocked': general practitioners' reaction to patient suicide.

OBJECTIVE: Patients who commit suicide have often seen their GP shortly before the suicide. This study explored the emotional effect of patients' suicides on GPs, and whether this effect was linked to the GPs' propensity to explore suicide risk. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 14 GPs sampled purposively aiming at maximum variation. Analysis by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. RESULTS: Patients' suicides had a substantial emotional effect on all GPs. Some developed a feeling of guilt and of having failed. If patients had contacted the GP about physical sympt

Using semantic feature analysis to improve contextual discourse in adults with aphasia.

PURPOSE: Semantic feature analysis (SFA) was used to determine whether training contextually related words would improve the discourse of individuals with nonfluent aphasia in preselected contexts. METHOD: A modified multiple-probes-across-behaviors design was used to train target words using SFA in 3 adults with nonfluent aphasia. Pretreatment, posttreatment, and follow-up sessions obtained language samples for the preselected contexts. Contexts included 4 story retellings and 4 procedure explanations. RESULTS: All participants improved naming ability for treated words. No generalization to

What makes a man a man? The lived experience of male breast cancer.

Male breast cancer is a rare condition with scant research into its psychosocial impact. This phenomenologic study sought to elicit its lived experience. Following analysis of interview data, 4 key themes emerged: Living with male breast cancer, concealment as a strategy for managing the diagnosis, a contested masculinity, interacting with health services. Male breast cancer constitutes a unique lived experience for men that is unparalleled in other disease profiles. The idea of living with a feminized illness was very distressing and stigmatizing for some men. Furthermore, treatment resulted

Family attachment narrative therapy: healing the experience of early childhood maltreatment.

Based on attachment theory and research, Family Attachment Narrative Therapy is introduced as a new family therapy modality developed to heal the experience of early childhood maltreatment. Unresolved childhood trauma has been correlated with impaired and delayed cognitive, behavioral and emotional functioning. Gentle, soothing, nonprovocative and nonintrusive narratives told by parents provide an alternative restorative experience designed to shift and change the child's destructive internal working model. The result is improved functioning and the ability to accept nurturing and care in rela

Understanding the role of technology to support life transitions in residential aged care settings.

Everyday practices, including technology use, by older adults can significantly change during important life transitions. However, technologies do not always match their evolving needs. This paper examines how older adults reconfigure everyday technology use when navigating major life transitions in later life. We have engaged with fifteen participants living in residential care settings for three years in weekly group activities and individual visits. Through deep and meaningful collaborations, we got to know these residents and their life circumstances closely. We created detailed narratives

From battlefield to living room: a community-based narrative intervention for reciprocal healing during war.

BACKGROUND: The "Swords of Iron" war created a reality of shared trauma, blurring the boundaries between the front line and the home front. Traditional clinical models often face challenges in providing scalable, real-time responses to mass trauma. This study examines "Hero in the Living Room"-a community-based narrative intervention-as a mechanism for processing trauma and promoting resilience during the acute phase of conflict. METHODS: Using a qualitative-phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 65 participants: 25 active-duty soldiers and 40 civilians who

Quebec lung, liver and heart transplant recipients' perspectives on self-narratives and their experiences in creative writing workshops during the transplantation journey: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Although solid organ transplantation is a life-saving procedure, it is also associated with numerous challenges for patients. Creative writing has been described as a therapeutic tool for patients with chronic disease. Between 2020 and 2022, we held creative writing workshops with patients and professional writers. During these workshops, patients were invited to explore different aspects of their transplantation journey through different literary styles. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to understand lung, liver and heart transplant patients' perspectives on the role of patie

Negotiating illness through faith: Religious narratives of cancer etiology among patients and caregivers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Cancer has become a major global public health threat, and individuals diagnosed with cancer and their family caregivers often seek to understand their illness experiences. Religious, spiritual, and sociocultural beliefs play a central role in shaping illness interpretations and care-seeking behaviors. However, in Ethiopia, limited attention has been paid to how these frameworks influence cancer experiences. This study explored religious narratives and interpretations of illness etiology among individuals diagnosed with cancer and their family caregivers and examined their influence on illness

Auditory Brainstem Encoding of Speech-in-Noise Predicts Word Identification, Narrative Comprehension, and Subjective Listening Effort in a Selective Attention Task.

The auditory brainstem plays a crucial role in speech-in-noise (SiN) listening, refining numerous acoustic features such as pitch and spatial location under continual descending influence from the cortex. However, the difficulty of characterizing brainstem activity during continuous speech listening has obscured its functional role in ecologically valid contexts-not only the effects of selective attention on neural responses but also their impact on comprehension and listening effort. Here, we evaluated the role of the brainstem in SiN perception and other listening behaviors using a continuou

Sign language narrative reveals universal and modality-specific features of cortical timescale hierarchy.

Human languages are unique in their capacity to tell stories. Prior neuroimaging studies show that spoken language narrative comprehension engages a neural time-scale hierarchy, from words and sentences to narratives. Sign languages share core features with spoken languages but also have modality-specific elements such as use of hands, face and spatial position to convey meaning and mark grammar. Here, we use naturalistic fMRI to examine which aspects of the language hierarchy are speech-specific versus modality-general. Native signers (n = 20) watched a 20-minute Polish Sign Language interpre

Language-based AI modeling of personality traits and pathology from life narrative interviews.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) hold promise for clarifying personality disorder (PD) models, research methodology, understanding, and clinical treatment. This study models personality and personality pathology using natural language. A representative community sample of N = 1,409 older adults from St. Louis (33% Black, 65% White, and 2% other) completed life narrative interviews lasting on average 20 min. Language from the interviews was then used to train and test language-based personality models on scores from the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised and the Structured Interview for

"It's time … to end everything": Discontinue medication choices and narratives among elderly HIV-positive Yi women.

Elderly Yi women living with HIV have long been caught between the burdens of family responsibilities and the constraints of local medical management policies, which should be considered. Based on an ethnographic study of these people in a mountainous region of southwestern China, this study employs the narrative disruption approach of Narcofeminism to examine their disease narratives and drug-related decisions-particularly their choice to discontinue medication-within the intersecting contexts of health, family duties, and ethnic medical policies. Our findings note that the decision to stop a

Assessing the Impact of a Community-Based Narrative Film about Diabetes and Homelessness.

Stigma prevents societal acceptance, reinforces social inequities, and greatly complicates the management of diabetes for those dealing with homelessness. Various forms of media, such as film, can educate audiences and play a role in reducing stigma, but the effectiveness of such interventions in changing individuals' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs (KAB) requires further exploration. This study assessed the impact of a film on diabetes and homelessness through pre- and post-surveys of audience members (n = 202) at 12 screening events. The surveys measured changes in KAB through Likert scale

Narrative identity at the end of life: a qualitative analysis of dignity therapy interviews from an existential perspective.

BACKGROUND: Confronting terminal illness and the prospect of death and dying can severely undermine an individual's sense of identity, meaning and purpose in life, leading to existential suffering, increasing hopelessness, depressive symptoms, and death anxieties. OBJECTIVES: This study explored how narrative approaches can alleviate existential suffering, promote emotional healing, and consolidate identity for individuals confronted with death and dying. Specifically, the study aimed to (1) analyze dimensions of identity reflected in Dignity Therapy (DT) legacy documents from a randomized co

["I'm not an anti-vaxxer, but…": understanding vaccine hesitancy based on narratives of hesitant parents].

Vaccine hesitancy constitutes a phenomenon related to fear, delay, and partial or total refusal of vaccines recommended by immunization programs. This phenomenon has caused concern as it threatens important achievements regarding the reduction of the morbidity and mortality of vaccine-preventable diseases. This study aimed to understand the decision process of parents who were hesitant about vaccines. This study aimed to evaluate the meanings these parents attribute to vaccination and what experiences can be elicited by decisions about vaccination. A qualitative research was carried out by in-

Listening to the silence of pain narratives: A qualitative study of epistemic injustice in patient-clinician communication on medically unexplained chronic pain in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how the narrative identities of patients with medically unexplained chronic pain change over time following repeated dismissal of their attempts to communicate their pain. METHODS: We conducted a narrative analysis using interviews from the Database of Personal Experiences of Health and Illness-Japan. Participants were 16 adults living with medically unexplained pain (MUEP), including individuals diagnosed with fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, or chronic pain disorder, and individuals without a confirmed diagnosis. A reflexive thematic analy
