A case of pneumocephalus in a 45-year-old male with undifferentiated rhinopharyngeal carcinoma is described. The patient was initially subjected to radiotherapy and then to transmaxillary resection and a second course of stereotactic radiotherapy for recurrent disease. Previously we have described the presence of Waldeyer's ring equivalent (WRE) lymphoid tissue in the rat, and pointed out the importance of such an experimental model for studying the immunological role of nasopharyngeal lymphoid tissue. BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has a relatively high incidence in Chinese living in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South China. To better understand this cancer, we have established several new NPC cell lines.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We collected biopsy specimens from suspected NPC patients and divided each specimen into two parts: the first part was fixed for routine histopathologic examination, and the other part was put into culture medium for primary culture. Forty-one cases of nasopharyngeal and 13 cases of nasal malignant lymphoma have been examined histologically and immunohistochemically. All of the cases were non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; one case was of follicular type and the remaining 53 were of diffuse type. Large cell lymphoma comprised 48% of cases and most of the immunoblastic lymphomas showing pleomorphism occurred in the nose. Twenty-seven cases were of T-cell and 21 of B-cell phenotype. Spontaneous rupture of hepatic metastases is rare, there being only 22 cases documented in the literature. We report here the first such case due to nasopharyngeal carcinomatous metastases. This is of interest because in South East Asia ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma is the usual cause of spontaneous fatal haemoperitoneum.

Eleven consecutive cases of nasal/nasopharyngeal lymphoma were studied histologically and with a panel of monoclonal antibodies. The disease showed a male predominance and occurred over a wide age range, with a median of 52 years. Eighteen of 36 patients (50%) with the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma had cranial nerve deficits before definitive radiotherapy. Within this group of 18 patients, there were 34 cranial nerve abnormalities and four Horner's syndromes. OBJECTIVES: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely related to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Detection of EBV genomic DNA in a nasopharyngeal swab specimen may indicate the presence of NPC, and the EBV genomic DNA is only detected in patients with NPC and not in other head and neck cancers. This study aims to prove that detection of EBV genomic DNA by means of the latent membrane protein (LMP)-1 gene and the Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen (EBNA)-1 gene in the nasopharynx in NPC patients after radiation therapy indicates local recurrence of NPC.
