Postradiation sarcoma: case report and review of the potential complications of therapeutic ionizing radiation.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy is an acceptable treatment choice for many cutaneous malignancies. A potential late sequela of ionizing radiation is the development of secondary neoplasms within the treatment field. Although there are well-known cutaneous syndromes in which the use of ionizing radiation is contraindicated, in other clinical situations, physicians may not fully realize the risks associated with this therapeutic modality. OBJECTIVE: Through a case report presentation, a potential adverse consequence of radiation therapy will be discussed. A subsequent review of the literature sho

MR imaging of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx.

Despite recent diagnostic advances, the laryngopharynx remains an area where accurate assessment of tumor size and extent is difficult. Computed tomography has proven helpful in delineating lesions in these areas, yet significant limitations exist. In an attempt to more accurately evaluate laryngopharyngeal neoplasms, MR imaging was performed in 25 consecutive patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx. Mr imaging was analyzed for its utility in clinical staging, assistance in selection of candidates for conservation, Laryngeal surgery, and ability to reliably predict

[Malignant tumors as complications of lymphedema].

Malignant tumour arising in chronic congenital or acquired lymphedema is a rare medical condition. However it must be well known because of the usual severity of these highly malignant neoplasms. Stewart-Treves angiosarcoma is the most frequent tumour: it is a vascular malignant tumour, which mostly occur in post-surgical or radiotherapeutic lymphedema for breast cancer. It differs from secondary metastasis arising in lymphedema although the clinical and histological appearance is often very close. Other tumours can grow on this ground: Kaposi's sarcoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant lymp

Early-stage glottic cancer: importance of dose fractionation in radiation therapy.

The treatment results in 85 patients with T1N0M0 squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx who were treated with primary radiation therapy were reviewed to analyze for local control. After a minimum follow-up period of 2 years, 13 patients had local recurrence of disease, which yielded a local control rate of 84.7%. Local control was then reassessed as a function of substages (T1a and T1b) and dose fractionation. No difference in local control was seen in T1a and T1b neoplasms. However, after undergoing standard once-a-day fractionation, patients treated with fractions of 200 cGy had a loc

Neoplastic consequences of transplantation and chemotherapy.

An increased incidence of certain neoplasms occurs in immunodeficiency states. The incidence of cancer in organ transplant patients is approximately 4%. The predominant tumors are lymphomas, carcinomas of the skin and lips, carcinomas of the vulva/perineum, in situ carcinomas of the uterine cervix, and Kaposi sarcoma (KS). Tumors appear a relatively short time after transplantation. Unusual features of the lymphomas are the high incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, frequent involvement of extranodal sites, and marked predilection for the brain. Skin cancers present unusual features: predominanc

Ovarian Brenner tumors. II. Malignant.

In this study, nine malignant Brenner tumors were reviewed and divided into well and poorly differentiated types. To meet the criteria for malignancy, stromal invasion must be observed. A component of typical benign, metaplastic, and/or proliferating Brenner tumor should be identified. The presence of these latter elements is necessary because the malignant component is often too poorly differentiated to be identified as a Brenner tumor, and a metastatic lesion cannot otherwise be ruled out on pathologic grounds. Well-differentiated tumors often occurred in close relationship to proliferating

Vascular and tissue effects of photodynamic therapy in a murine cutaneous tumor model.

Skin cancer is the most common neoplasm worldwide and presents a significant health concern. Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a therapeutic option for treating malignant and potentially precancerous skin lesions. To improve this technique and design more effective protocols, it is vital to understand the relationship between PDT damage in blood vessels and surrounding tissues. In this study, solid tumors of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were induced in balb/c nude mice. Damages were evaluated using histology and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to compare PDT protocol

A rare case of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma affecting the mandible - A case report.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a rare entity found in the oral cavity which involves the mandible in only 3% of all UPS bone lesions. The correlation of the clinical presentation of the neoplasm with the histopathological and immunohistochemistry findings is very important for appropriate diagnosis. Its incidence in membranous bone like mandible is rare. According to our literature search in the PubMed database, there are only four reported cases from India some of which does not have any immunohistochemistry findings to confirm the diagnosis. We present a rare case of UPS of ma

Periorbital desmoplastic squamous cell carcinoma.

Desmoplasia is the formation of a dense collagenous stroma around a neoplasm. It occurs in a variety of malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). While desmoplasia is uncommonly seen in cutaneous SCC, it is an independent risk factor for recurrence and metastasis. We report a case series of desmoplastic SCC in the periorbital region. Seven cases were identified: the median age was 68, four were men. The mean follow-up was 48 months. Two patients (29%) had aggressive local recurrence: one required salvage surgery including orbital exenteration, parotidectomy, and neck dissection to

Laryngeal histoplasmosis.

Histoplasma capsulatum is an endemic granulomatous fungus disease. Involving the larynx of an immunocompetent patient with this is a rare manifestation. A sixty years old farmer who was previously diagnosed and treated as pulmonary tuberculosis was presented as a progressive change of voice and intermittent attack of unproductive cough with no history of stridor and fever for last 7 months. Clinical and imaging investigations were suggestive of laryngeal tuberculosis or laryngeal neoplasm. Laryngoscopy revealed edema, erythema and leukoplakia of the right vocal cord. Orbital myiasis complicating squamous cell carcinoma in xeroderma pigmentosum.

Ophthalmomyiasis is a rare infection seen in susceptible individuals. We report a case of orbital myiasis in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in a patient of xeroderma pigmentosum. On presentation, reddish brown ulcerated mass with numerous maggots in orbit were seen. Computed tomography scan showed the presence of soft tissue lesion without any bony destruction. Following debridement, emergency exenteration with sacrifice of eyelid skin was performed. The diagnosis of SCC was confirmed on histopathologic evaluation. The maggots belonged to family Calliphoridae and secondary bacterial infection w

Incidence and sites of distant metastases from head and neck cancer.

The incidence of distant metastases in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is relatively small in comparison to other malignancies. Distant metastases adversely impact survival and may significantly affect treatment planning. The incidence of distant metastases is influenced by location of the primary tumor, initial T and N stage of the neoplasm, and the presence or absence of regional control above the clavicle. Patients with advanced nodal disease have a high incidence of distant metastases, particularly in the presence of jugular vein invasion or extensive soft tissue disease in the

Quintuple Primary Cancers Including Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Carcinoma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of multiple primary malignancies has increased owing to advances in cancer screening and treatment. However, cases involving five distinct primary cancers remain extremely rare. Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are known to be associated with extrapancreatic malignancies. We report a very uncommon case of quintuple primary cancers, including noninvasive intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma (IPMC), and discuss its clinical implications. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old man was referred for evaluation of pancreatic duct dilatation incidentally det

Comparison of Computed Tomographic Features of Confirmed Nasal Neoplasia in Dogs.

While computed tomography (CT) imaging is commonly used to evaluate canine nasal tumors, the ability to differentiate tumor types based on imaging features remains limited. This retrospective study examined dogs with confirmed nasal neoplasia to determine whether CT characteristics differ between epithelial and mesenchymal tumors. Cases from a single institution (2013-2022) were reviewed, and the frequency of CT features between epithelial and mesenchymal tumors was compared using Fisher's exact test. Also, CT features of less commonly reported nasal neoplasms, including squamous cell carcinom

A case report of metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma during pregnancy.

Esophageal cancer is extremely rare in pregnant women, accounting for only 0.07%-0.1% of all malignant neoplasms in pregnancy. It is rapidly progressive in nature and requires timely intervention. Our literature search yielded six case reports of esophageal cancers in pregnancy thus far. We herein report the case of a 30-year-old female, presenting at 32 weeks of gestation with complaints of hoarseness, dysphagia, and weight loss. The biopsy taken from within the esophagus, using an endoscope during an upper endoscopy procedure confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of esophagus an

Giant squamous cell carcinoma of the gallbladder: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the biliary tract. The majority of cases are adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the histological type present in 12% of all neoplasias accounting for approximately 12% of gallbladder neoplasms. It can occur in its pure form reaching 1%-3% of the tumors. Many patients are at an advanced stage when diagnosed and have bad therapeutic efficacy. CASE SUMMARY: A 45-year-old male patient presented with left flank pain for 1 year and irradiated to the mesogastric region. He denied fever, vomiting, and any other intestinal ch

Clinicopathological characteristics of primary lung nuclear protein in testis carcinoma: A single-institute experience of 10 cases.

BACKGROUND: Nuclear protein in testis (NUT) carcinoma is a rare tumor associated with NUT rearrangement that can present as poorly differentiated to undifferentiated carcinoma, with or without abrupt squamous differentiation. It is often misdiagnosed as poorly differentiated carcinoma or undifferentiated carcinoma if NUT is not suspected. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed pulmonary NUT carcinoma cases diagnosed with NUT immunohistochemical staining and discuss the differential diagnosis to provide information for this rare and aggressive entity. METHODS: Cases, diagnosed as "NUT carc

Gallbladder carcinoma with osteoclast-like giant cells.

Extraskeletal tumors containing multinucleated, osteoclast-like giant cells (OGCs) are uncommon. These neoplasms are most frequently reported in the breast and pancreas. Recently, some authors have suggested that carcinomas containing OGCs may represent a distinct clinicopathological entity with a more favorable prognosis. Occurrence in the gallbladder is extremely rare, with only one previous case. We report here on an additional case of gallbladder carcinoma with an infiltrate of OGCs. A 72-year-old woman presented with postprandial abdominal pain and was found to have a mass in the body of
