Functional magnetic resonance imaging data for the association between polygenic risk scores for neuroticism and reward-punishment processing.

Neuroticism as a personality trait represents a heritable risk for psychiatric disorders. The polygenic risk score for neuroticism (N-PRS) is used to study genetic vulnerability to neuroticism. The current data present the association of the genetic risk for neuroticism to neural reward-punishment processing using functional magnetic resonance imaging. N-PRS was computed based on the individual's genotype information and a genome-wide association study on the UK Biobank data. While individuals performed a monetary incentive delay task, their neural activations for upcoming incentives (reward:

Responses of functional brain networks in micro-expressions: An EEG study.

Micro-expressions (MEs) can reflect an individual's subjective emotions and true mental state, and they are widely used in the fields of mental health, justice, law enforcement, intelligence, and security. However, one of the major challenges of working with MEs is that their neural mechanism is not entirely understood. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to use electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the reorganizations of functional brain networks involved in MEs. We aimed to reveal the underlying neural mechanisms that can provide electrophysiological indicators

Are Electrocochleographic Changes an Early Sign of Cochlear Synaptopathy? A Prospective Study in Tinnitus Patients with Normal Hearing.

The mechanism of tinnitus accompanied by a normal audiogram remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate evidence of primary neural degeneration, also known as cochlear synaptopathy, in tinnitus patients with normal hearing thresholds. We analyzed the differences in electrocochleography (ECochG) measurements between normal-hearing subjects with and without tinnitus. Forty-five subjects were enrolled in this study: 21 were in the tinnitus group, defined by chronic tinnitus of over two months’ duration with normal audiometric thresholds, and 24 were in the control group, defined by a lack of

Neural correlates of enhancing question asking and initiations in children with autism spectrum disorders: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate challenges in various areas of social communication. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) targeting question-asking on brain activity in twenty 6-12-year-old autistic boys, using a Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT) design. Verbal children, diagnosed with autism, who lacked question asking in their communication were matched based on age and mean length utterance (MLU) and were randomly placed in either PRT intervention or treatment as usual (TAU) groups. Sessions were individually ad

Effects of Mind-Body Exercise on Brain Structure and Function: A Systematic Review on MRI Studies.

Mind-body exercise has been proposed to confer both physical and mental health benefits. However, there is no clear consensus on the neural mechanisms underlying the improvements in health. Herein, we conducted a systematic review to reveal which brain region or network is regulated by mind-body exercise. PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were systematically searched to identify cross-sectional and intervention studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to explore the effect of mind-body exercise on brain structure and func

Environmental Enrichment Induces Meningeal Niche Remodeling through TrkB-Mediated Signaling.

Neural precursors (NPs) present in the hippocampus can be modulated by several neurogenic stimuli, including environmental enrichment (EE) acting through BDNF-TrkB signaling. We have recently identified NPs in meninges; however, the meningeal niche response to pro-neurogenic stimuli has never been investigated. To this aim, we analyzed the effects of EE exposure on NP distribution in mouse brain meninges. Following neurogenic stimuli, although we did not detect modification of the meningeal cell number and proliferation, we observed an increased number of neural precursors in the meninges. A l

Development of wirelessly-powered, extracranial brain activator (ECBA) in a large animal model for the future non-invasive human neuromodulation.

As transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is an emerging and promising technique for neuromodulation, we developed a novel device; wirelessly-powered, extracranial brain activator (ECBA), which is mounted subcutaneously, and its neuromodulation effect was investigated. The oscillatory changes in electrocorticography (EcoG) were analyzed from two types of stimulation. Two weeks prior to the recording experiment, we underwent surgery for implantation of subdural strips and ECBA module over centroparietal regions of anesthetized beagles. Low-frequency stimulation (LFS) and subsequent high-freq

Preparation and characterization of curcumin-loaded polymeric nanomicelles to interference with amyloidogenesis through glycation method.

Amyloid fibrils, including β-amyloid (Aβ) fibrils, are protein aggregates that form under certain conditions, associated with neurodegeneration that interfere with neural synaptic transmission resulting in some neural disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease. The aim of this study is to inhibit amyloidogenesis by using preparatory polymeric nanomicelles as therapeutic agents and also as nanocarriers for curcumin to target Aβ fibrils through the glycation method of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of phosphate-buffered saline. Polymeric nanomicelles were prepared from phosphatidylethano

Atypical somatosensory-motor cortical response during vowel vocalization in spasmodic dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE: Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a debilitating voice/speech disorder without an effective cure. To obtain a better understanding of the underlying cortical neural mechanism of the disease we analyzed electroencephalographic (EEG) signals of people with SD during voice production. METHOD: Ten SD individuals and 10 healthy volunteers produced 50 vowel vocalization epochs of 2500 ms duration. Two EEG features were derived: (1) event-related change in spectral power during vocalization relative to rest, (2) inter-regional spectral coherence. RESULTS: During early vocalization (500-1000 ms

Retrograde monosynaptic tracing through an engineered human embryonic stem cell line reveals synaptic inputs from host neurons to grafted cells.

Retrograde monosynaptic tracing with EnvA-pseudotyped rabies virus has been employed to identify the afferent and efferent connectivity of transplanted human embryonic stem (hES) cell-derived neurons in animal models. Due to the protracted development of transplanted human neurons in host animals, it is important that those transplanted cells express avian leukosis and sarcoma virus subgroup A receptor (TVA) and rabies glycoprotein G (Rgp) for a period of up to several months to enable identification of the synaptic inputs from host neurons to grafted neurons through this rabies virus-based me

Mapping working memory retrieval in space and in time: A combined electroencephalography and electrocorticography approach.

In this study, we investigated the time course and neural correlates of the retrieval process underlying visual working memory. We made use of a rare dataset in which the same task was recorded using both scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and Electrocorticography (ECoG), respectively. This allowed us to examine with great spatial and temporal detail how the retrieval process works, and in particular how the medial temporal lobe (MTL) is involved. In each trial, participants judged whether a probe face had been among a set of recently studied faces. With a method that combines hidden semi-Mark

Differential polarization of cortical pyramidal neuron dendrites through weak extracellular fields.

The rise of transcranial current stimulation (tCS) techniques have sparked an increasing interest in the effects of weak extracellular electric fields on neural activity. These fields modulate ongoing neural activity through polarization of the neuronal membrane. While the somatic polarization has been investigated experimentally, the frequency-dependent polarization of the dendritic trees in the presence of alternating (AC) fields has received little attention yet. Using a biophysically detailed model with experimentally constrained active conductances, we analyze the subthreshold response of

Whole-genome sequencing reveals principles of brain retrotransposition in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Neural progenitor cells undergo somatic retrotransposition events, mainly involving L1 elements, which can be potentially deleterious. Here, we analyze the whole genomes of 20 brain samples and 80 non-brain samples, and characterized the retrotransposition landscape of patients affected by a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders including Rett syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, ataxia-telangiectasia and autism. We report that the number of retrotranspositions in brain tissues is higher than that observed in non-brain samples and even higher in pathologic vs normal brains. The majority of somatic
