Fully Convolutional Hybrid Fusion Network With Heterogeneous Representations for Identification of S1 and S2 From Phonocardiogram.

Heart auscultation is a simple and inexpensive first-line diagnostic test for the early screening of heart abnormalities. A phonocardiogram (PCG) is a digital recording of an analog heart sound acquired using an electronic stethoscope. A computerized algorithm for PCG analysis can aid in detecting abnormal signal patterns and support the clinical use of auscultation. It is important to detect fundamental components, such as the first and second heart sounds (S1 and S2), to accurately diagnose heart abnormalities. In this study, we developed a fully convolutional hybrid fusion network to identi

Clinical validation of enhanced CT imaging for distal radius fractures through conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGAN).

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) account for approximately 18% of fractures in patients 65 years and older. While plain radiographs are standard, the value of high-resolution computed tomography (CT) for detailed imaging crucial for diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention planning, and increasingly recognized. High-definition 3D reconstructions from CT scans are vital for applications like 3D printing in orthopedics and for the utility of mobile C-arm CT in orthopedic diagnostics. However, concerns over radiation exposure and suboptimal image resolution from some devices neces

A hybrid CNN and ensemble model for COVID-19 lung infection detection on chest CT scans.

COVID-19 is highly infectious and causes acute respiratory disease. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models are vital in detecting disease from computerized chest tomography (CT) scans. The DL models outperformed the ML models. For COVID-19 detection from CT scan images, DL models are used as end-to-end models. Thus, the performance of the model is evaluated for the quality of the extracted feature and classification accuracy. There are four contributions included in this work. First, this research is motivated by studying the quality of the extracted feature from the DL by feeding

Precise localization of corneal reflections in eye images using deep learning trained on synthetic data.

We present a deep learning method for accurately localizing the center of a single corneal reflection (CR) in an eye image. Unlike previous approaches, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) that was trained solely using synthetic data. Using only synthetic data has the benefit of completely sidestepping the time-consuming process of manual annotation that is required for supervised training on real eye images. To systematically evaluate the accuracy of our method, we first tested it on images with synthetic CRs placed on different backgrounds and embedded in varying levels of noise. Seco

Using deep learning for an automatic detection and classification of the vascular bifurcations along the Circle of Willis.

Most of the intracranial aneurysms (ICA) occur on a specific portion of the cerebral vascular tree named the Circle of Willis (CoW). More particularly, they mainly arise onto fifteen of the major arterial bifurcations constituting this circular structure. Hence, for an efficient and timely diagnosis it is critical to develop some methods being able to accurately recognize each Bifurcation of Interest (BoI). Indeed, an automatic extraction of the bifurcations presenting the higher risk of developing an ICA would offer the neuroradiologists a quick glance at the most alarming areas. Due to the r

Saliency maps provide insights into artificial intelligence-based electrocardiography models for detecting hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION: A 12‑lead electrocardiography (ECG)-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model can detect hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, since these models do not rely on discrete measurements as inputs, it is not apparent what drives their performance. We hypothesized that saliency maps could be used to visually identify ECG segments that contribute to a CNN's robust classification of HCM. METHODS: We derived a new one‑lead (lead I) CNN model based on median beats using the same methodology and cohort used for the original 12‑lead CNN model (3047 patients with HCM, and 63,926

TS-DSANN: Texture and shape focused dual-stream attention neural network for benign-malignant diagnosis of thyroid nodules in ultrasound images.

Recently, accurate diagnosis of thyroid nodules has played a critical role in precision medicine and healthcare system management. Due to complicated changes in ultrasound features of texture, and similar visual appearance of benign-malignant nodules, the identification of cancerous thyroid lesions from a given ultrasound image still faces challenges for even experienced radiologists. Learning-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have accordingly attracted more and more attention recently. However, little research is committed to developing a deep learning-based CAD system that has gre

tinyRadar for Fitness: A Contactless Framework for Edge Computing.

Healthcare technology is evolving from a conventional hub-based system to a personalized healthcare system accelerated by rapid advancements in smart fitness trackers. Modern fitness trackers are mostly lightweight wearables and can monitor the user's health round the clock, supporting ubiquitous connectivity and real-time tracking. However, prolonged skin contact with wearable trackers can cause discomfort. They are susceptible to false results and breach of privacy due to the exchange of user's personal data over the internet. We propose tinyRadar, a novel on-edge millimeter wave (mmWave) ra

Deep Neural Network-Based Visual Feedback System for Nasopharyngeal Swab Sampling.

During the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic, robotic-based systems for swab sampling were developed to reduce burdens on healthcare workers and their risk of infection. Teleoperated sampling systems are especially appreciated as they fundamentally prevent contact with suspected COVID-19 patients. However, the limited field of view of the installed cameras prevents the operator from recognizing the position and deformation of the swab inserted into the nasal cavity, which highly decreases the operating performance. To overcome this limitation, this study proposes a visual feedback system that

Automatic normalized digital color staining in the recognition of abnormal blood cells using generative adversarial networks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Combining knowledge of clinical pathologists and deep learning models is a growing trend in morphological analysis of cells circulating in blood to add objectivity, accuracy, and speed in diagnosing hematological and non-hematological diseases. However, the variability in staining protocols across different laboratories can affect the color of images and performance of automatic recognition models. The objective of this work is to develop, train and evaluate a new system for the normalization of color staining of peripheral blood cell images, so that it transforms im

SDMT: Spatial Dependence Multi-Task Transformer Network for 3D Knee MRI Segmentation and Landmark Localization.

Knee segmentation and landmark localization from 3D MRI are two significant tasks for diagnosis and treatment of knee diseases. With the development of deep learning, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based methods have become the mainstream. However, the existing CNN methods are mostly single-task methods. Due to the complex structure of bone, cartilage and ligament in the knee, it is challenging to complete the segmentation or landmark localization alone. And establishing independent models for all tasks will bring difficulties for surgeon's clinical using. In this paper, a Spatial Dependen

Diagnosis of Infantile Hip Dysplasia With B-Mode Ultrasound via Two-Stage Meta-Learning Based Deep Exclusivity Regularized Machine.

The B-mode ultrasound (BUS) based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has shown its effectiveness for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in infants. In this work, a two-stage meta-learning based deep exclusivity regularized machine (TML-DERM) is proposed for the BUS-based CAD of DDH. TML-DERM integrates deep neural network (DNN) and exclusivity regularized machine into a unified framework to simultaneously improve the feature representation and classification performance. Moreover, the first-stage meta-learning is mainly conducted on the DNN module to alleviate the overfitting issue caused by

Deep learning model inspired by lateral line system for underwater object detection.

Inspired by the lateral line systems of various aquatic organisms that are capable of hydrodynamic imaging using ambient flow information, this study develops a deep learning-based object localization model that can detect the location of objects using flow information measured from a moving sensor array. In numerical simulations with the assumption of a potential flow, a two-dimensional hydrofoil navigates around four stationary cylinders in a uniform flow and obtains two types of sensory data during a simulation, namely flow velocity and pressure, from an array of sensors located on the surf

Enhanced Feature Extraction-based CNN Approach for Epileptic Seizure Detection from EEG Signals.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

One of the most common neurological disorders is epilepsy, which disturbs the nerve cell activity in the brain, causing seizures. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are used to detect epilepsy and are considered standard techniques to diagnose epilepsy conditions. EEG monitors and records the brain activity of epilepsy patients, and these recordings are used in the diagnosis of epilepsy. However, extracting the information from the EEG recordings manually for detecting epileptic seizures is a difficult cumbersome, error-prone, and labor-intensive task. These negative attributes of the manual

Topology optimization search of deep convolution neural networks for CT and X-ray image classification.

Covid-19 is a disease that can lead to pneumonia, respiratory syndrome, septic shock, multiple organ failure, and death. This pandemic is viewed as a critical component of the fight against an enormous threat to the human population. Deep convolutional neural networks have recently proved their ability to perform well in classification and dimension reduction tasks. Selecting hyper-parameters is critical for these networks. This is because the search space expands exponentially in size as the number of layers increases. All existing approaches utilize a pre-trained or designed architecture as

Identification and Classification of Benign and Malignant Masses based on Subtraction of Temporally Sequential Digital Mammograms.

Breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths and the second highest cause of death, in general, among women worldwide. Fortunately, over the last few decades, with the introduction of mammography, the mortality rate of breast cancer has significantly decreased. However, accurate classification of breast masses in mammograms is especially challenging. Various Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems are being developed to assist radiologists with the accurate classification of breast abnormalities. In this study, classification of benign and malignant masses, based on the subtraction

CNN-Based Classification of Craniosynostosis Using 2D Distance Maps.

Craniosynostosis is a condition associated with the premature fusion of skull sutures affecting infants. 3D photogrammetric scans are a promising alternative to computed tomography scans in cases of single suture or nonsyndromic synostosis for diagnostic imaging, but oftentimes diagnosis is not automated and relies on additional cephalometric measure-ments and the experience of the surgeon. We propose an alternative representation of the infant's head shape created from 3D photogrammetric surface scans as 2D distance maps. Those 2D distance maps rely on ray casting to extract distances from a

Multi-label annotation of text reports from computed tomography of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis using deep learning.

BACKGROUND: There is progress to be made in building artificially intelligent systems to detect abnormalities that are not only accurate but can handle the true breadth of findings that radiologists encounter in body (chest, abdomen, and pelvis) computed tomography (CT). Currently, the major bottleneck for developing multi-disease classifiers is a lack of manually annotated data. The purpose of this work was to develop high throughput multi-label annotators for body CT reports that can be applied across a variety of abnormalities, organs, and disease states thereby mitigating the need for huma
