A nursing metaparadigm perspective of diabetic foot ulcer care.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes that impact on the patient, their social environment, overall health, and on nursing practice. Nursing scholars have integrated theories on practice to overcome these problems, but a lack of agreement in the available literature acts as a barrier to implementing these in practice. For that reason, using a nursing metaparadigm as a theoretical framework would assist nurses in managing care purposefully and proactively, thus possibly improving outcomes. There has been little discussion about the nursing metaparadigm in relation t

Translating a Nurse-Led Coping-Sleep-Adherence Bundle Into Routine Cardiovascular Care: A Theory-Informed Implementation Blueprint.

BACKGROUND: Adults with cardiovascular disease frequently experience anxiety, sleep disturbance, and challenges with long-term treatment adherence. These factors are associated with poorer quality of life, reduced engagement in guideline-directed therapy, and increased healthcare utilization. Although nurses are well-positioned to address these needs, nurse-led behavioral interventions often encounter barriers to sustained adoption in routine clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to describe a theory-informed implementation blueprint for integrating a nurse-led coping-sleep-ad

The Appropriate Translation of the Nurse Practitioner Will Foster Health Equity.

Background: In September 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed Assembly Bill 890 (AB 890) into law, which changed Title 16 of the Nurse Practice Act, granting California nurse practitioners (NPs) a stepwise approach to full practice authority. Written within the law, NPs are required to verbally identify themselves specifically to all Spanish-speaking patients, as enfermera(o) especializada (o). Local Problem: AB 890 requires NPs to identify themselves using inappropriate Spanish terminology. There are concerns regarding the translational accuracy of nurse practitioners under AB 890

The impact of transition shocks on career aspirations during nursing internships: A moderated mediated effects model.

BACKGROUND: During the transition from theoretical learning to clinical practice, nursing students frequently experience substantial transitional stress, potentially undermining their professional aspirations and even leading to turnover intentions. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, exploring effective coping strategies and guiding nursing students in developing sound professional values are critical for enhancing their career stability. AIMS: To investigate whether occupational stigma moderates the mediating effect of nursing students' sense of occupational respec

Eat Walk Engage: Enabling acute care teams to deliver consistent fundamentals of care for older people.

AIMS: Fundamentals of care are particularly important for older people in acute inpatient settings, who are at increased risk of serious hospital-associated complications like delirium and functional decline. These complications occur due to interactions between clinical complexity and the complex processes and context of hospital care and can be reduced by consistent attention to the fundamentals of care. This paper aims to illustrate of how multi-level nursing leadership of fundamentals of care can be supported to emerge within complex multidisciplinary delivery systems in acute care. DESIG

Back in action: Reducing risky bends to protect nursing staff.

BACKGROUND: Direct care nursing staff perform a significant amount of risky bends contributing to high rates of moderate-to-severe back pain. Few practical, lasting interventions to address this issue have been reported. PURPOSE: To identify workflow-related sources of risky bending and implement practical interventions to reduce ergonomic hazards among direct care nursing staff. METHODS: An ergonomic motion study using the Colorado Nurses Ergonomic Study tool identified medication retrieval and bedside care activities as major sources of risky bends. Interventions included relocating high-u

Newly graduated and nurse resident competencies: Perceptions of nurse faculty and acute care hospital leaders in the state of Maryland.

BACKGROUND: The many educational pathways to obtain a professional nursing degree create confusion among healthcare leaders about new graduate nurses' (NGNs) competency expectations when entering practice. PURPOSE: This research sought to identify, among Maryland nursing academic and practice leaders, a standard set of NGN competencies after completing their prelicensure program and nurse residency program (NRP) at 12 months. METHOD: A mixed-method approach was used, including a survey of 109 outcome statements and faculty and practice leader focus groups. RESULTS: Results suggested that 90

The provision of physical health care by nurses to young people with first episode psychosis: A cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: This paper addresses an identified gap in the international literatures related to physical health care of young people with first episode psychosis. Previous studies indicate that nurses' skills, knowledge and attitudes influence physical health outcomes for service users. The educational preparation of nurses influences their physical health care nursing practices. Nurses who have a high level of skills, knowledge and positive attitudes towards the provision of physical health care are more likely to initiate this care to young people experiencing f

Homeless No More: A Christ-Centered, Comprehensive Homeless Recovery Program.

Caring for vulnerable and marginalized populations is a central tenet of professional nursing, and of Christian service. Due to the scope and complexities of problems associated with homelessness, nurses may feel overwhelmed and ill-equipped to serve homeless individuals. Strategies for ending homelessness largely include resource-intensive, publicly supported housing and comprehensive physical and mental health services. The role of spirituality in recovery from homelessness has not been widely examined. This article describes one homeless shelter's successful Christ-centered, comprehensive a

Perinatal Nurses Reported to Boards of Nursing: Understanding the Facts.

Today's healthcare system is in a state of transformation, as changes in technology, diagnostic approaches, treatments, and levels of professional practice occur on a regular basis. Nurses continue to be the most trusted profession. What has not changed in clinical practice is the amount of responsibility and level of accountability. Therefore, nurses are morally, legally, and ethically responsible for nursing judgment and clinical-based actions covered under each state's Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association's core principles, and position statements as well as standard setting

Nosocomial infections: important acute care nursing-sensitive outcomes indicators.

Clinical and cost burdens related to nosocomial infections continue to plague the US healthcare system. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and the immunocompromised are especially at risk. Current evidence suggests that because hospital stays are shorter, nosocomial infection rates per 1000 patients have actually increased. Nosocomial infections, specifically bacteremias, have been targeted by the American Nurses Association as outcomes that can be affected by nursing in acute care settings. Nursing staffing and practices recently have been linked to the incidence of nosocomial infect

An Investigation of Professional Integrity in Pre-registration Nurse Education: A Modified Grounded Theory Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Acting with integrity is a central part of nursing practice. However, literature shows that professional integrity can be absent and where this is present it can face challenges. Governmental Inquiries have revealed deficits in the expression of nursing values which underpin professional integrity, in particular caring, compassionate and competent practice that maintains the dignity of patients. Evidence also suggests that it cannot be taken for granted that pre-registration education will have a positive impact on student nurses' ability to practice with integrity. OBJECTIVES: Th

Coping with transition: neonatal nurse practitioner education for the 21st century.

As neonatal intensive care nurses face downsizing and/or cross-training, new opportunities are emerging for advanced practice nurses in follow-up care of neonatal intensive care unit graduates, case management, quality improvement, and community hospital care. This article identifies current issues in neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) education as the model has shifted from hospital-based, certificate programs to graduate degree programs offered by colleges/universities of nursing. Opportunities for increasing NNP role flexibility and recommendations for bridging the transition to a 21st centu

Advancing Research, Writing, and Publishing in Nursing: Addressing Challenges and Improving Standards.

Nurses constitute nearly 50% of the worldwide health workforce, and the World Health Organisation has advocated for an enlargement of their roles to guarantee fair health care and address the increasing need for services. The growing specialization in nursing practice has led to a rise in educational options for nurses, including the growth of PhD programs. These programs play a crucial role in preparing nurse researchers and educators. This growth underlines the importance of evidence-based practice and high-quality academic writing in nursing. The article highlights the importance of nurses'
