Orbital Remodeling and 3-dimensional Printing in Delayed Orbital Floor Fracture Reconstructions.

The mechanism and physiology of orbital cavity remodeling after orbital fractures is not well described. This poses a challenge in the delayed operative treatment of orbital floor fractures due to variations from expected anatomy and may risk injury to critical structures during exploration as well as misguided reconstruction, causing persistent ocular dystopia. We report a case where significant orbital remodeling caused unexpected challenges to orbital floor reconstruction, highlighting the need for further research in this field. A 23-year-old previously healthy man was treated conservative…

Magnon Orbital Nernst Effect in Honeycomb Antiferromagnets without Spin-Orbit Coupling.

Recently, topological responses of magnons have emerged as a central theme in magnetism and spintronics. However, resulting Hall responses are typically weak and infrequent, since, according to present understanding, they arise from effective spin-orbit couplings, which are weaker compared to the exchange energy. Here, by investigating transport properties of magnon orbital moments, we predict that the magnon orbital Nernst effect is an intrinsic characteristic of the honeycomb antiferromagnet and therefore, it manifests even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. For the electric detection, w…

Intermittent Orbital Pain due to Hemodynamic Collapse of an Orbital Varix: A Case Report.

Orbital varices typically present with symptoms related to dilation or thrombosis. We describe a rare presentation of an orbital varix with pain caused by hemodynamic collapse of the varix. A woman in the third decade presented with position-dependent orbital pain and enophthalmos. She was found to have an intraorbital varix and a separate pterygoid varix. The patient underwent endovascular treatment of the pterygoid varix using coils and sclerosing agents which altered the venous outflow from the orbital varix. The patient had immediate resolution of symptoms after the procedure. Our findings…

Severe orbital inflammation and hemorrhage complicating bleomycin sclerotherapy for orbital lymphaticovenous malformation.

Percutaneous sclerotherapy is a well-recognized treatment for management of low-flow vascular malformations. It is regarded as a safe and effective procedure, and there are very few reports of sight-threatening complications in the medical literature. We describe a case of a 12-year-old girl who developed severe orbital compartment syndrome due to a combination of orbital inflammation and hemorrhage, resulting in massive proptosis, severe chemosis, optic nerve compression, severe lagophthalmos, exposure keratitis and visual loss following bleomycin sclerotherapy for a right orbital and periorb…

Low-Cost 3D Printing Orbital Implant Templates in Secondary Orbital Reconstructions.

PURPOSE: Despite its increasing use in craniofacial reconstructions, three-dimensional (3D) printing of customized orbital implants has not been widely adopted. Limitations include the cost of 3D printers able to print in a biocompatible material suitable for implantation in the orbit and the breadth of available implant materials. The authors report the technique of low-cost 3D printing of orbital implant templates used in complex, often secondary, orbital reconstructions. METHODS: A retrospective case series of 5 orbital reconstructions utilizing a technique of 3D printed orbital implant te…

A Shift in the Orbit: Immediate Endoscopic Reconstruction After Transnasal Orbital Tumors Resection.

Endoscopic endonasal resection of orbital lesions is a safe and common approach. Nevertheless, medial orbital wall defects following the procedure are not routinely addressed, potentially leading to diplopia and enophthalmos. In this article, the authors propose a new technique for purely endoscopic endonasal reconstruction of orbital wall defects following endoscopic endonasal resection of orbital lesions. The patient, a 43-year-old male, suffering from right exophthalmos and diplopia due to a venous malformation of the right orbit underwent endoscopic endonasal resection of the mass. Excision…
