Chemoreflex blunting of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction is vagally mediated.

We investigated the role of the autonomic nervous system in the arterial chemoreceptor attenuation of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HP … ect HPV in groups 2 and 3, we conclude that the chemoreceptor attenuation of HPV is mediated by the parasympathetic nervous system.

Effects of Chronic and State Loneliness on Heart Rate Variability in Women.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness, the subjective experience of social isolation, represents one of the largest risk factors for physical illness and early death in humans. However, the mechanisms by which loneliness leads to adverse health outcomes are not well understood. PURPOSE: In this study, we examined altered parasympathetic nervous system function as a potential pathway by which chronic loneliness and state loneliness may "get under the skin" to impact cardiovascular physiology. METHODS: In a controlled laboratory setting, vagally mediated resting heart rate variability (HRV), HRV reactivity t…

Approaches to modeling the development of physiological stress responsivity.

Influential biopsychosocial theories have proposed that some developmental periods in the lifespan are potential pivot points or opportuniti … ndividuals, and (b) provide an exemplar for evaluating development of responsivity to stress in the parasympathetic nervous system, comparing respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) responsivity from middle to late childhood with middle to late adolescence. We propose the use of latent growth modeling of stress responsivity that includes time-varying covariates to account for concep …

Heritability of cardiac vagal control in 24-h heart rate variability recordings: influence of ceiling effects at low heart rates.

This study estimated the heritability of 24-h heart rate variability (HRV) measures, while considering ceiling effects on HRV at low heart rates during the night. HRV was indexed by the standard deviation of all valid interbeat intervals (SDNN), the root mean square of differences between valid, successive interbeat intervals (RMSSD), and peak-valley respiratory sinus arrhythmia (pvRSA). Sleep and waking levels of cardiac vagal control were assessed in 1,003 twins and 285 of their non-twin siblings. Comparable heritability estimates were found for SDNN (46%-53%), RMSSD (49%-54%), and pvRSA (48

Function and modulation of premotor brainstem parasympathetic cardiac neurons that control heart rate by hypoxia-, sleep-, and sleep-related diseases including obstructive sleep apnea.

Parasympathetic cardiac vagal neurons (CVNs) in the brainstem dominate the control of heart rate. Previous work has determined that these neurons are inherently silent, and their activity is largely determined by synaptic inputs to CVNs that include four major types of synapses that release glutamate, GABA, glycine, or serotonin. Whereas prior reviews have focused on glutamatergic, GABAergic and glycinergic pathways, and the receptors in CVNs activated by these neurotransmitters, this review focuses on the alterations in CVN activity with hypoxia-, sleep-, and sleep-related cardiovascular dise

An overview of autonomic regulation of parotid gland activity: influence of orchiectomy.

The parotid gland participates in the digestive process by providing fluid, electrolytes and enzymes that facilitate the onset of digestion. Neurotransmitters, hormones and biologically active peptides regulate its activity. The autonomic system is the main regulatory mechanism of the gland. Sympathetic stimulation induces amylase release through beta(1)-receptor activation and few fluid secretion by alpha(1)-receptor activation. The parasympathetic system controls basal activity of the gland acting on M(1) and M(3) muscarinic acetylcholine receptors and induces the secretion of fluid saliva r

Valsalva maneuver in chagasic patients with documented past medical history of acute chagasic myocarditis.

BACKGROUND: We studied the heart rate responses to the Valsalva maneuver in eight patients with documented past medical history of acute Chagas' disease. METHODS: Four patients were studied 8-21 months after the acute episode and four, 58-68 months thereafter (age 25+/-8.65 years M+/-S.D.). Seventeen healthy subjects of similar age were included as controls (age 27+/-7.5 years, P=NS). RESULTS: Baseline heart rate was higher in chagasic patients (88+/-15 beats/min) compared to controls (69.8+/-9.8, P=0.001). Maximum heart rate at phase II of the maneuver was also higher (114+/-16.3 vs. 101.5+

Heart rate responses to a muscarinic agonist in rats with experimentally induced acute and subacute chagasic myocarditis.

We administered arecoline to rats, with experimentally induced chagasic myocarditis, in order to study the sinus node sensitivity to a muscarinic agonist. Sixteen month old rats were inoculated with 200,000 T. cruzi parasites ("Y" strain). Between days 18 and 21 (acute stage), 8 infected rats and 8 age-matched controls received intravenous arecoline as a bolus injection at the following doses: 5. 0, 10.0, 20.0, 40.0, and 80.0 microg/kg. Heart rate was recorded before, during and after each dose of arecoline. The remaining 8 infected animals and 8 controls were subjected to the same experimenta

Mesencephalic cholinergic nuclei in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Using an antibody against choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), mesencephalic cholinergic cell nuclei were studied in autopsy material from 3 cases of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and 4 controls. ChAT-immunoreactive neurons were quantified in sections that spanned the rostrocaudal extent of each nucleus. In PSP, there was a significant decrease in the number of neurons with detectable immunoreactivity for ChAT in and adjacent to the central gray substance in the following nuclei: the nucleus of Edinger-Westphal (69%); the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (

Respiratory mucus hypersecretion (bronchorrhea): a case discussion--possible mechanisms(s) and treatment.

The mechanism(s) underlying mucus hypersecretion (bronchorrhea) and the treatment of this condition are poorly understood. We have previously demonstrated that erythromycin inhibited mucus secretion from human airways and from secretory epithelial cells in vitro. We encountered a patient with airway obstruction marked by severe bronchorrhea, who previously had responded only to inhaled bronchodilators and high-dose prednisone. Many attempts to wean him from prednisone had failed. During the course of his disease, he had developed an IgG antibody to vasoactive intestinal peptide, had increased

[Evaluation of long-term results of vidian neurectomy in the treatment of perennial rhinitis].

Vidian neurectomies by transnasal and transseptal approaches were performed on 21 patients with perennial rhinitis and with a follow-up of 5 years. The results showed that sneezing and watery rhinorrhea relapsed in 85.7% of the operated series and 66.7 per cent in one year after operation. The causes of recurrence were discussed and analysed. We consider that symptoms of sneezing and watery rhinorrhea are induced by a series of factors so that the efficacy of single vidian neurectomy needs further evaluation.

Inhibition of high-affinity choline uptake in the rat hippocampus by in vivo injection of phenobarbital in the medial septum.

Barbiturates administered i.p. inhibit the activity in the septal-hippocampal cholinergic pathway as assessed by an inhibition of choline uptake into hippocampal synaptosomes in vitro. The present experiments were designed to determine where in the central nervous system the drugs act to have this effect. Barbiturates and other drugs were injected into selected sites in the awake, freely moving rat via previously implanted cannulas. It was found that phenobarbital, barbital and muscimol injected into the medial septal area inhibited choline uptake in the hippocampus. Pentobarbital was less eff

Chronic administration of sulbutiamine improves long term memory formation in mice: possible cholinergic mediation.

Thiamine deficiency in both man and animals is known to produce memory dysfunction and cognitive disorders which have been related to an impairment of cholinergic activity. The present experiment was aimed at testing whether, inversely, chronic administration of large doses of sulbutiamine would have a facilitative effect on memory and would induce changes in central cholinergic activity. Accordingly mice received 300 mg/kg of sulbutiamine daily for 10 days. They were then submitted to an appetitive operant level press conditioning test. When compared to control subjects, sulbutiamine treated

The distribution of substance P-containing neurons in the cat Edinger-Westphal nucleus: relationship to efferent projection systems.

The light microscopic localization of substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) was examined in the cat Edinger--Westphal complex using the peroxidase--antiperoxidase method. A high density of cell bodies and processes staining for SPLI were found in the caudal part of the Edinger--Westphal complex (EWc) capping the somatic divisions of the oculomotor nucleus. This distribution continued rostrally into the anteromedian nucleus (AM). Cells labeled with SPLI were also found arranged in a thin layer dorsally capping the oculomotor nucleus, and scattered cells were found in the periaqueductal gray

[Timolol response in denervational syndromes (author's transl)].

In eyes with pupillotony (Argyll Robertson) the effect of locally applied timolol maleate (0.5%) on intraocular pressure is considerably less pronounced than in normal control eyes. In Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis the timolol response is the same as in controls. Infrared thermography of the anterior segment of the eye showed that the maximum drop in IOP was preceded by a fall in temperature. These findings suggest that the IOP-lowering effect of timolol depends on parasympathetic innervation and that timolol decreases the blood flow in the ciliary body.

Botulism: clinical neurophysical findings.

Four cases of mild botulinus type B intoxication are reported with the clinical neurophysiological studies. Electromyographically tetanic stimulation of the N. ulnaris initially led to tetanic potentiation of the muscle action potential. After an interval without any symptoms tetanic reduction became apparent between the fourth and seventh week of the illness. The electroneurographic finding was normal during the observation period of three months. Infrared reflex pupillographic studies revealed that the cholinergic autonomous synapses were disturbed for a period much longer than the symptoms

Distribution of non-myelinating Schwann cells and their associations with leukocytes in mouse spleen revealed by immunofluorescence staining.

The nervous system and the immune system communicate extensively with each other in order to maintain homeostasis and to regulate the immune response. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) communicates specifically with the immune system according to local interactions, including the "hardwiring" of sympathetic/parasympathetic (efferent) and sensory nerves (afferent) to lymphoid tissue and organs. To reveal this type of bidirectional neuroimmune interaction at the microscopic level, we used immunofluorescent staining of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) coupled with confocal microscopy/3D r

Vasovagal syncope in aircrew. Psychosocial aspects.

Twenty-four aircrew members with the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope were compared to 26 controls on variables of personality characteristics, psychosocial antecedents to the onset of their conditions, and hyperventilation experience. The syncope group was found to be younger, slightly less adaptable, and to have significantly more negative feelings about their work. The authors argue that syncope in aircrew should be considered from a psychosocial perspective as well as from a medical-neurological perspective.
