BACKGROUND: Prevention of Frey syndrome (FS) after parotidectomy using an interposition barrier has long been gaining a wide popularity; however, there is no clear evidence regarding which preventive technique is more effective. The aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) is to answer the question: What is the best method for prevention of FS after parotidectomy?
METHODS: A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS, and Cochrane library was conducted to identify the eligible studies. The outcome was the incidence of subjective Frey syndrome (SFS) and objective Frey syndrome (OFS). Th

The relationships between parotid tumours and the facial nerve determine duration of surgical procedure and risks involved. As the division of the facial nerve is not visible using standard imaging techniques, other anatomical landmarks are used to determine the pre-operative location of tumours. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate reliability of the 'external jugular vein axis' compared with other landmarks generally used in imaging, such as the retromandibular vein, Conn's arc, the facial nerve line and the Utrecht line. Forty-eight pre-operative imaging exams of patients who underwen

BACKGROUND: The malignancy of parotid carcinoma varies, and accurate preoperative assessment of malignancy is important for selecting the appropriate treatment. However, the preoperative diagnosis of low/intermediate-grade carcinoma is difficult, and surgery may sometimes be performed without any prior knowledge of malignancy.
METHODS: The results of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA), imaging studies (MRI and US), physical examination, and frozen section biopsy (FSB) were evaluated in 112 patients with low/intermediate-grade parotid carcinoma.
RESULTS: The result of FNA was benign/inadeq

In this study, we aimed to reveal the long-term impact of radiotherapy on recovery of facial animation function after facial nerve repair using sural nerve grafting in patients undergoing parotid gland surgery. We reviewed the medical records of patients who did or did not undergo radiotherapy following sural nerve graft repair after parotid gland surgery. Facial function metrics, such as House-Brackmann (HB) scale scores and FACEgram measurements, were used to compare facial muscle function between groups. Postoperative radiotherapy was performed in 14 of 21 patients. There was no significant

BACKGROUND: Greater auricular nerve (GAN) sacrifice can alter sensation; however, the impact on quality of life (QoL) is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate patients' QoL following GAN sacrifice versus preservation.
METHODS: Patients who underwent parotidectomy from 2010 to 2019 at a single institution completed two QoL surveys. Results between GAN-sacrificed versus preserved cohorts and short (≤ 1 year) versus long-term (> 1 year) follow-up were compared.
RESULTS: Of 404 patients, 67 with known GAN status completed the surveys. GAN-sacrificed patients more frequently

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland pathology in the paediatric population is rare and can present management challenges regarding both investigation and treatment.
METHOD: Case report and review of available literature.
RESULTS: A seven-year-old, fit, well girl presented with a two-month history of a painless mass over the left parotid area. Ultrasonography confirmed the presence of a well-defined, 1.5 × 2 cm, predominantly solid lesion with minor internal cystic spaces arising from the superficial part of the gland. Magnetic resonance imaging showed no invasion of the deep lobe or skeletal erosio

We report 2 rare cases of nonsebaceous lymphadenoma (NSL) in the parotid gland. In both cases, microscopic examination revealed central dilated duct-like structure and its surrounding many cysts in the background of the lymphoid stroma. The cysts were lined with luminal cells and abluminal cells, with the latter being predominant. Occasionally, foci of abluminal epithelial islands were observed. Immunohistochemical findings showed that these tumors had basal cell phenotypes and could support the diagnosis of NSL. The microscopic architectural pattern indicated a cystic dilated duct-glands unit

A parotid gland mass with presenting features of malignancy is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The histological nature of the lesion must be clearly determined before proceeding with facial nerve sacrificing surgery. Although rare, tuberculosis of the parotid gland must be included in the differential diagnosis of a parotid gland mass especially when the social characteristics of the patient suggests a mycobacterial infection. Primary tuberculosis of the parotid gland is generally encountered among populations with a high incidence of pulmonary disease. The difficulty in the differenti

Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland is a challenging surgical experience. Resection of such recurrences is associated with an increased risk of facial nerve injury and a higher incidence of recurrent disease. Resection of the primary tumor with a cuff of normal tissue around it during the primary surgical resection lowers the incidence of such metastases, but even with them, metastases still occur. Surgery of such metastases requires high surgical expertise as well as intra-operative decision-making. Intraoperative monitoring of the facial nerve may be of help during these surgi

Head and neck carcinoma is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and accounts for approximately 4% of all cancer cases, with incidence varying by subtype and anatomical location . Salivary gland tumours in childhood are rare, with an annual incidence of less than 1 per million, representing fewer than 10% of paediatric head and neck cancers. Although the annual incidence of paediatric salivary gland malignancies is less than 1 per million, a salivary gland neoplasm presenting in a child carries a 50-60% probability of malignancy, with sialoblastoma accounting for approximately 4% of all saliv

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor of the head and neck region. It accounts for 12.4%-17.4% of parotid gland malignancies and approximately 3.4% of all salivary gland tumors. ACC is a low-grade salivary gland malignancy that predominantly affects females. In some cases, ACC can undergo high-grade transformation (HGT), resulting in more aggressive behavior. Here, we present a rare case of recurrent Acinic cell carcinoma with aggressive features and high-grade cytomorphology-including increased cellularity, papillary and singly scattered cells, high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic (N:C

BACKGROUND: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign tumor within the salivary glands. Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC), the malignant counterpart of BCA, is also an exceedingly rare tumor with very limited clinical studies conducted. This study aims to investigate the clinical characteristics, demographics, and surgical outcomes of patients diagnosed with BCA and BCAC within the parotid gland.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis from May 2003 to August 2023 was performed for all patients undergoing parotidectomy for masses. Retrospective data on gender, age, tumor characteristics, and outcome

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the accessory parotid gland is rare, and to our knowledge, only two cases have previously been reported. It has an association with the Epstein-Barr virus and is usually seen in Asians and Greenland Eskimos. We report a case of lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the left accessory parotid gland in a 59-year-old European man who had been raised in the Belgian Congo. After excision of the left accessory parotid gland with preservation of the facial nerve, he recovered well without complication, and there was no evidence of locoregional recurrence or distant metastases af

BACKGROUND: Prognostic factors for parotid mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) usually include disease grade, tumor stage, node stage, perineural invasion, and lymphovascular invasion. But the role of intraparotid nodes (IPNs) remains unclear, therefore, the study aimed to analyze the significance of IPNs in predicting recurrence in parotid MEC.
METHODS: One hundred and ninety patients were included for analysis finally. Data regarding demography, pathological characteristics, IPN metastasis, TNM stage, follow up was collected and evaluated. The recurrence-free survival (RFS) was the main study en
