Locoregional recurrence in carcinoma of the ophthalmic sites: Primary cancer and secondary invasion from adjacent regions.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate locoregional recurrence in patients treated with local treatment. METHODS: This was an institutional-based retrospective observational cohort study including 36 patients with ophthalmic plus nasal cavity (NC) and paranasal sinus carcinoma invading ophthalmic structures. Patients underwent treatment with surgery and radiotherapy. The primary outcome measure was the frequency and pattern of treatment failure. RESULTS: Seventeen patients with ophthalmic cancer were identified with a median follow-up of 3.5 years. Most originated from the eyelid (64.7%), followed by the g

Effect of dose to parotid ducts on Sticky Saliva and Xerostomia in radiotherapy of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) in head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) often leads to sticky saliva and xerostomia (SSX). Dose sparing of salivary glands (SG) reduces occurrence of SSX but few studies investigated the relationship between RT dose to SG substructures and SSX. We therefore investigated this hypothesis, focusing on the parotid duct (PD). METHODS: Retrospective data was collected from 99 HNSCC patients treated at our center with (chemo-)radiotherapy (CRT). PD and other organs-at-risk (OAR) were (re-)contoured and DVHs were generated without re-planning. SSX was graded accord

An approach to evaluate the quality of radiological reports in Head and Neck cancer loco-regional staging: experience of two Academic Hospitals.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of the reports of loco-regional staging computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in head and neck (H&N) cancer. METHODS: Consecutive reports of staging CT and MRI of all H&N cancer cases from 2018 to 2020 were collected. We created lists of quality indicators for tumor (T) for each district and for node (N). We marked these as 0 or 1 in the report calculating a report score (RS) and a maximum sum (MS) of each list. Two radiologists and two otolaryngologists in consensus classified reports as low quality (LQ) if the RS fell in the percent

Survival in patients with parotid gland carcinoma - Results of a multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland carcinoma is a rare malignancy, comprising only 1-4% of head and neck carcinomas; therefore, it is difficult for a single institution to perform meaningful analysis on its clinical characteristics. The aim of this study was to update the clinical knowledge of this rare disease by a multi-center approach. METHODS: The study was conducted by the Kyoto University Hospital and Affiliated Facilities Head and Neck Clinical Oncology Group (Kyoto-HNOG). A total of 195 patients with parotid gland carcinoma who had been surgically treated with curative intent between 2006 and

Distinct contributions by ionotropic purinoceptor subtypes to ATP-evoked calcium signals in mouse parotid acinar cells.

There is emerging consensus that P2X₄ and P2X₇ ionotropic purinoceptors (P2X₄R and P2X₇R) are critical players in regulating [Ca²⁺]i dynamics and fluid secretion in the salivary gland. In contrast, details regarding their compartmentalization and selective activation, contributions to the spatiotemporal properties of intracellular signals and roles in regulating protein exocytosis and ion channel activity have remained largely undefined. To address these concerns, we profiled mouse parotid acinar cells using live-cell imaging to follow the spatial and temporal features of ATP-evoked Ca²⁺ dynam

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy in head and neck cancers: an update.

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), an advent of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D CRT), has excited the profession of radiation oncology more than any other new invention since the introduction of the linear accelerator. Approximately 1000 articles have been published on this topic to date, more than 200 of which focus on head and neck cancer. IMRT is based on computer-optimized treatment planning and a computer-controlled treatment delivery system. The computer-driven technology generates dose distributions that sharply conform to the tumor target while minimizing the do

Multimodality image fusion to facilitate anatomic localization of 99mTC-pertechnetate uptake in the feline head.

99mTc-pertechnetate is excreted in humans by the thyroid glands, gastric mucosa, salivary glands, choroid plexus, and sweat glands. Uptake attributed to the zygomatic and molar salivary glands is used commonly as a reference to assess thyroid uptake and differentiate euthyroid from hyperthyroid cats. However, the exact location and origin of uptake of 99mTc-pertechnetate in the head during thyroid scintigraphy in cats remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to localize uptake of 99mTc-pertechnetate in the head of the cat using multimodality image fusion. Computed tomography (CT), magn

Dosimetric Comparison of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) for a Novel Oral Tongue Avoidance Concept in Low-Risk Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oral Tongue.

PURPOSE: After adequate surgical resection, early-stage oral tongue cancer patients can harbor a low risk of local recurrence but remain at risk of regional recurrence. Oral tongue avoidance during adjuvant radiation therapy is an attractive potential treatment strategy to mitigate treatment toxicity. We sought to quantify the dosimetric advantages of this approach and hypothesized that intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) may further reduce organs at risk doses compared with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five patients with oral tongue cancer treate
