Renewal of cocaine seeking using social and nonsocial contextual stimuli.

RATIONALE: Various nonsocial cues have been used as stimuli to examine the contextual control of drug seeking behavior, but little is known about the role of social stimuli. OBJECTIVES: This study determined if renewal of cocaine seeking is differentially controlled using a context consisting of either a social peer and/or house light illumination. METHODS: In Experiment 1, male and female rats trained to self-administer cocaine in the presence of a same-sex social peer and house light illumination (context A). Following self-administration, rats were randomly assigned to either an AAA (cont

Peer support for frequent users of inpatient mental health care in Uganda: protocol of a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Reducing readmissions among frequent users of psychiatric inpatient care could result in substantial cost savings to under-resourced mental health systems. Studies from high-income countries indicate that formal peer support can be an effective intervention for the reduction of readmissions among frequent users. Although in recent years formal peer support programmes have been established in mental health services in a few low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), they have not been rigorously evaluated. METHODS: This protocol describes a quasi-experimental difference-in-differenc

Social knowledge in children with language impairments: examination of strategies, predicted consequences, and goals in peer conflict situations.

This study investigated social knowledge in school-age children, aged 8-12 years, with and without language impairment (LI and TD groups). A hypothetical peer conflict task was administered to examine the relationship among prosocial responses and parent/teacher ratings of children's social behaviours. Stimuli included 12 hypothetical peer conflict vignettes presented in an open-ended and forced choice condition. The LI group generated (open-ended) and selected (forced choice) fewer prosocial strategies. When asked to predict a friend's reaction to a selected conflict resolution strategy, the

Peer HIV/AIDS education with volunteer trishaw drivers in Yaan, People's Republic of China: process evaluation.

Peer-based HIV prevention education has become increasingly popular in China. Few studies have explored culturally appropriate strategies or the effectiveness of this approach among the growing population of Chinese self-employed young people--a group quite vulnerable to HIV and other sexually transmissible infections. The findings presented here are from a process evaluation of a peer-led demonstration project with self-employed trishaw drivers in Yaan, China. This study examines sexual health message diffusion from 150 volunteers in a direct training group to 705 peers in an indirect trainin

Peer learning in birth units: Experiences of preceptors, student coordinators and managers.

AIM: To explore managers', student coordinators' and preceptors' experiences of implementing and using peer learning in birth units. BACKGROUND: Clinical learning in birth units is influenced by multiple factors and may be challenging for both midwifery students and preceptors. To complement traditional one-to-one supervision, the Birth Unit Peer Learning model was developed and implemented in Swedish birth units. The model aims to promote student-centred learning, collaboration, reflection and active participation in clinical practice while maintaining the quality of learning and care. DESI

A Machine Learning-Guided Lyric Analysis Peer Support Intervention (LAPSI) for Psychological Distress in South African Women: Protocol for an Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress disproportionately affects women in South Africa and is shaped by complex structural, socioeconomic, and psychosocial determinants, particularly within the context of HIV. Despite policy commitments to integrate mental health services into existing health systems, current interventions are limited in their capacity to address these intersecting determinants and are frequently insufficiently targeted, contextually responsive, or inclusive. Data-driven strategies that identify subgroup-specific vulnerabilities may improve the design of contextually relevant and

Near-peer learning in neurology residency: a 6-year experience comparing knowledge gains across cerebrovascular, electromyography, and electroencephalography modules.

BACKGROUND: Near-peer learning (NPL) may address challenges in neurology residency training, but its comparative efficacy across subspecialties with different cognitive demands remains unclear. METHODS: The authors conducted a six-year longitudinal study evaluating a structured NPL curriculum within a neurology residency program. The study included residents who participated in three modules: cerebrovascular disease (CVD), electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG). Knowledge gains were assessed using pre- and post-course examinations. Linear mixed-effects models with Bonferroni

It's Your Right - implementation and outcomes of a co-designed national Australian hepatitis C health promotion campaign.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, an estimated 74,400 people in Australia were living with hepatitis C. Despite an initial rapid uptake of direct acting antiviral treatment after their approval for use in Australia in 2016, national hepatitis C testing and treatment rates have declined since 2019. In response, It's Your Right, a national health promotion campaign co-designed with and for people with lived-living experience of injecting drug use and/or hepatitis C, was implemented in all Australian states and territories in 2022. This article presents outcomes of the campaign. METHODS: A mixed methods eval

The effects of peer health education on alcohol consumption behaviour among university students in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is a widespread public health issue, contributing to numerous health conditions, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In Nigeria, alcohol is culturally significant, often associated with socializing and respect. However, early alcohol use and high consumption rates among university students pose serious health risks. Peer health education has shown promise as an intervention to reduce risky health behaviours, including alcohol use. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study involved university students in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, assessing alcohol consu

Use of Peer-Based Motivational Interviewing to Reduce Alcohol Use and Sexual Violence Among U.S. Sailors: A Feasibility Study.

INTRODUCTION: Risky drinking and sexual violence (SV; i.e., sexual harassment, sexual assault) affect U.S. military personnel, potentially compromising operational readiness. Drinking and SV often co-occur in social settings, making a behavioral risk intervention focused on peers ideal for implementation with military personnel. Here, we present findings from phase 1 of a 3-phase project to develop a peer-based motivational intervention (PMI) aimed at reducing risky drinking and SV among U.S. service members. In this phase we sought to understand sailors' perspectives on alcohol use and SV in

Social network mechanisms of ethnic inequalities in smoking among adolescents.

Despite decreasing overall smoking rates, ethnic inequalities in smoking persist. Although smoking is largely a social behavior, the underlying social network mechanisms for this are still unclear. We disentangled and tested potential social network mechanisms responsible for persistent ethnic inequalities in smoking. We applied Stochastic Actor-Oriented Models for 1644 friendships of 299 Roma and Non-Roma Hungarian adolescents in nine classes and 1605 antipathies of 294 adolescents in eight school classes over two panel waves. Adolescents were more likely to nominate same-ethnic peers as frie

Predictions from early adolescent interpersonal aggression to accelerated aging in adulthood: Relational and biological mechanisms of linkage.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined early adolescent interpersonal aggression, subsequent conflict with parents, and aggression toward close peers as predictors of accelerated biological aging by age 30. METHOD: Participants (N = 123; 46 males and 75 females) were assessed repeatedly, along with parents and close friends, ages from 13 to 30. RESULTS: Early adolescent interpersonal aggression was found to predict later accelerated aging even after accounting for adolescent gender, family income, prior health difficulties, and body shape ratings in adolescence. Path analyses suggested that the effe

Perceived Corporate and Peer Surveillance on the Internet: Scale Development and Validation.

In today's digital society, individuals' online activities are often observed by others. When people feel like they are being watched online, they may adjust their behavior to protect their privacy. To measure such perceptions and understand their antecedents and consequences, the Perceived Surveillance Scale (PSS) has been proposed to capture individuals' perceptions of being watched in digital environments. However, the PSS focuses on surveillance by corporate actors and does not address surveillance by actors such as family members or friends. This is a significant issue, as the literature

Pilot Randomized Trial of the Parental Friendship Coaching+ Program for Parents With Elevated ADHD and/or Depressive Symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Many parents of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience mental health challenges that may hinder engagement in behavioral parent training. This pilot randomized trial evaluated the feasibility and acceptability, and explored preliminary parent-related outcomes, of Parental Friendship Coaching+ (PFC+). PFC+ is an engagement-enhanced adaptation of Parental Friendship Coaching (PFC) for parents with elevated ADHD and/or depressive symptoms raising children with ADHD and peer difficulties. PFC trains parents to support their child's friendships throug

Paramedic perspectives on workplace peer support: a thematic analysis.

PURPOSE: Trauma exposure and workplace psychosocial hazards can negatively impact paramedics' mental health. Peer support programs are increasingly deployed, but evidence regarding their use in this context is limited. This qualitative study explored paramedics' experiences with peer support. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 paramedics, from a single Australian ambulance service, who had recently (<12 months) engaged with peer support. Interviews explored support needs, helpful and unhelpful program elements, and program outcomes. Transcripts were analysed using refl
