Haidinger's brushes in albinism: altered perception patterns in single cases.

PURPOSE: To characterize perception of Haidinger's brushes (HB) in individuals with albinism, in whom reduced macular pigment and abnormal foveal/Henle-fiber morphology may alter polarization sensitivity. METHODS: Three participants with oculocutaneous albinism (aged 19-29 years; two with nystagmus) viewed 468-nm polarized/unpolarized LED stimuli in a custom polarimetry device. Six randomized conditions varied polarization (0%, 20%, 50%, 100%) and polarizer rotation speed (2.3, 2.7, and 2.95 revolutions per second, rps); each tested eye completed three repetitions per condition. On each trial…

Critical Review on the Development and Evolution of Beat Perception.

Beat perception-the ability to extract a regular pulse from rhythmic sequences-is a foundational component of human musicality and a key mechanism supporting synchronization, dance, and collective music-making. Research across neuroscience, developmental psychology, and comparative cognition demonstrates that beat processing exhibits four defining characteristics: it is near-universal across human cultures, emerges spontaneously in early development, engages domain-specific predictive timing mechanisms, and appears rare across species. Neurophysiological evidence indicates that newborns respon…

HarmGR13 mediates myo-inositol taste perception in Helicoverpa armigera larvae.

Myo-inositol, a sugar alcohol produced by most plants, serves as a nutrient and feeding stimulant for many phytophagous insects. Inositol-sensitive taste sensilla have been characterized in many Lepidoptera larvae, but their molecular bases remain unclear. In this study, we determined the gustatory receptors (GRs) for myo-inositol in larva of Helicoverpa armigera, a worldwide crop pest. First, electrophysiological analyses revealed that medial sensilla styloconica strongly responded to myo-inositol and ribose, with weaker responses to xylose, and one GRN inside sensillum may mediate the respon

Tabula Rasa? A History of Fetal Learning and Neonatal Perception.

BACKGROUND: Sensory capacities of the fetus and newborn are still incompletely known. This paper delineates the history of understanding and evidence. SUMMARY: In the 2nd century, Galen propagated the tabula rasa theory comparing newborns to a blank writing tablet, without senses of sight, hearing, taste, or smell. Somatosensory: once the microscope was available, tactile receptors were identified in mid-17th century. But the tabula rasa theory persisted, and physicians maintained until the 1980s that neonates feel no pain. Auditory: the inner ear's development begins at 10 weeks of gestation

Deficits in Motion and Form Perception in Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Visual deficits in infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) could be a result of retinal blur from excessive eye movements and/or cortical changes from visual deprivation. We measured global motion and form sensitivity in INS to compare deficits between motion and form perception and to decipher the role of internal noise (local deficit such as eye movement) and sampling efficiency (global cortical deficit). METHODS: A total of 30 participants (14.40 ± 4.83 years) with INS and 30 age-matched controls discriminated the direction of motion and orientation of physically equivalent translation…

Consistency of perception of tobacco use: Evidence from a biomarker.

Public awareness of the adverse effects of tobacco use, tobacco regulations, and alternative forms of tobacco consumption have all increased over time. While these advances may influence perception of tobacco consumption, its temporal consistency remains unclear. We define this temporal consistency of tobacco use perception as the stability of biomarker thresholds for self-identification as a tobacco user. We use data from ten waves of the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), covering 1999-2000 through 2017-2018 (N = 36,624). We compare survey responses rega…

Orientation fields predict human perception of 3D shape from shading.

How the brain recovers the three-dimensional structure of surfaces and objects from 2D retinal images remains mysterious. Shading patterns p … from shading. We find that the orientation-based cues not only predict striking illusions of shape perception when lighting varies, but also the impressive robustness of shape perception when large image modifications are introduced to directly pit luminance and image orientation cues against one another. The findings resolve the longstanding question of wh …

Controllability changes pain perception by increasing the precision of expectations.

The ability to exert control over an intensely unpleasant experience, such as pain, can modulate its perception. It is often assumed that control exerts this modulatory effect through a specific control mechanism. We revisit this issue using a task that allowed participants to either control or predict the intensity of a painful stimulus. By approximating Bayesian perceptual integration with computational models, our data show that acute pain modulation by control can be parsimoniously explained by an increase in expectation precision. Importantly, this effect is present in contrast to a condi…

Accented Speech Perception in Noise After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: Perceiving nonnative-accented speech is a cognitively demanding task that requires additional cognitive effort compared to perceiving native-accented speech. People who have experienced a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI; also commonly referred to as concussion) report impairments in an overlapping set of cognitive capacities, leading to the prediction that the perception of nonnative-accented speech may be even more difficult than it would be for someone without a history of brain injury. Of interest is whether people who have suffered an mTBI find nonnative-accented speech less int…

Light, opsins, and life: Mammalian photophysiological functions beyond image perception.

Light, a fundamental form of energy and sensory input, has significantly shaped life forms on Earth. In mammals, light perception through the eyes, which enables image formation, is crucial for survival. However, beyond image-forming (IF) vision, light also mediates non-image-forming (NIF) functions, such as circadian photoentrainment and the pupillary light reflex. Recent studies have further demonstrated that light influences a wide range of physiological and behavioral processes, including mood, metabolism, cognition, pain perception, sleep, and neuronal development. The diverse types of op…

Lrrns define a visual circuit underlying brightness and contrast perception.

Brightness and contrast are fundamental features of vision, crucial for object detection, environmental navigation, and feeding. Here, we identify a brightness-and contrast-processing circuit in the zebrafish visual system and uncover the role of Leucine-rich repeat neuronal (Lrrn) cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) in regulating its assembly. Deep-projecting retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) serve as the first synaptic relay to the brain requiring Lrrn2 and Lrrn3a for precise axonal targeting and connectivity within the optic tectum. Genetic targeting of these CAMs leads to circuit disorganization an

Visual Vertigo Is Not Correlated with Perception of Dynamic Verticality.

INTRODUCTION: We conducted a prospective study determining the relationship between severity of visual vertigo and extent of visual dependence by comparing the visual vertigo analogue scale (VVAS) with the dynamic subjective visual vertical (dSVV) test. METHODS: A total of 76 patients with chronic dizziness (without peripheral or central vestibular lesions) and 43 healthy controls completed VVAS and dSVV testing. The VVAS uses nine visual analog scales to query visual vertigo across nine specific situations. The dSVV measures visual dependence under three conditions: static background, counte

To what extent do cataracts and cataract surgery change perception?

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure worldwide and is typically associated with an improvement in visual acuity (VA). This study aimed to examine how various visual functions, beyond VA and contrast sensitivity, are affected by cataracts and how they change after cataract surgery. We assessed 28 adults (aged 55-85 years) with vision-impairing cataracts using a comprehensive battery of visual tests at four visits: before surgery, 1 week after surgery of the first eye, 1 week after surgery of the second eye, and 1 month after the second surgery. Tests included VA, c

Subjective time perception in dementia: a behavioural and neuroanatomical analysis.

Subjective time perception-the modulation of elapsed clock time by sensory, homeostatic and psychological factors-is fundamental to how we experience the world. People with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia often exhibit clinically relevant symptoms of altered temporal awareness but these are poorly understood. Here we addressed this issue in a cross-sectional, case-control study of 60 patients representing all major Alzheimer (n = 24) and frontotemporal (n = 36) syndromes [mean age 68.8 (range 48-77 years); 28% female] and 24 cognitively well age-matched controls [age 69.4 (6.5)…

[Review of medical perception of non-binary and transgender continuum].

The physical and mental health of transgender and non-binary persons is a poorly researched area in our country. Diagnostic tools and awareness are limited, which makes the hidden client group particularly vulnerable. According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), ’gender incongruence’ is a permanent and significant discrepancy between the person’s lived and physical appearance. The lack of consistency alone does not indicate a diagnosis, but the more frequent occurrence of mental health difficulties and self-harming behavior justifies medical care in everyday general prac
