Assessment of developmental neurotoxicity induced by chemical mixtures using an adverse outcome pathway concept.

BACKGROUND: In light of the vulnerability of the developing brain, mixture risk assessment (MRA) for the evaluation of developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) should be implemented, since infants and children are co-exposed to more than one chemical at a time. One possible approach to tackle MRA could be to cluster DNT chemicals in a mixture on the basis of their mode of action (MoA) into 'similar' and 'dissimilar', but still contributing to the same adverse outcome, and anchor DNT assays to common key events (CKEs) identified in DNT-specific adverse outcome pathways (AOPs). Moreover, the use of hum

Phase-dependent mechanisms in ferrihydrite photoreduction mediated by derivatives of polystyrene microplastics.

The photoreductive dissolution of iron (hydr)oxides directly regulated the bioavailability of Fe(II), a process which was influenced by dissolved organic matter (DOM). Microplastic-derived DOM (MP-DOM), characterized by oxygenated aromatic structures, also mediated the photoreductive dissolution of iron (hydr)oxides. Oxidized derivatives of microplastics coexist in the environment as both dissolved and particulate phases, including particulate nanoplastics (NPs) and truly dissolved organic matter (DOM). These phases fundamentally differed in size, interfacial interaction mechanisms, and enviro

Effects of Exposure to Extreme Artificial Light at Night on Liver Oxidative Damage and Gut Microbiota During Pregnancy and Lactation in Mice.

Chronic exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) is increasingly recognized as an environmental risk factor that disrupts circadian regulation of endocrine and metabolic systems. In this study, we investigated the effects of extreme ALAN on oxidative stress and gut microbiota composition in mice using two complementary experiments. In Experiment 1, adult female mice were maintained under either as a standard 12 h light/12 h dark cycle (12 h group) or continuous 24 h light exposure (24 h group) throughout pregnancy and lactation. In Experiment 2, the offspring from the 12 h group were maint

A comparative study on degradation kinetics and toxicity changes of BPA and BPS in UV-based advanced oxidation processes.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that pose significant ecological and health risks due to their persistence and toxicity. This study presents a comprehensive comparison of three UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs: UV/Cl, UV/PDS, and UV/H2O2) for degrading BPA and BPS, with an emphasis on correlating degradation efficiency to the toxicity of transformation products (TPs). Using a 500 W mercury vapor lamp, we demonstrate how differences in electronic properties (e.g., BPA's electron-rich rings vs. BPS's electron-withdrawing sulfonyl group) in

Comparative mutagenicity and genotoxicity of particles and aerosols emitted by the combustion of standard vs. rapeseed methyl ester supplemented bio-diesel fuels: impact of after treatment devices: oxidation catalyst and particulate filter.

Diesel exhausts are partly responsible for the deleterious effects on human health associated with urban pollution, including cardiovascular diseases, asthma, COPD, and possibly lung cancer. Particulate fraction has been incriminated and thus largely investigated for its genotoxic properties, based on exposure conditions that are, however, not relevant for human risk assessment. In this paper, original and more realistic protocols were used to investigate the hazards induced by exhausts emitted by the combustion of standard (DF0) vs. bio-diesel fuels (DF7 and DF30) and to assess the impact of

Developmental toxicity and alteration of gene expression in zebrafish embryos exposed to PFOS.

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant, the potential toxicity of which is causing great concern. In the present study, we employed zebrafish embryos to investigate the developmental toxicity of this compound. Four-hour post-fertilization (hpf) zebrafish embryos were exposed to 0.1, 0.5, 1, 3 and 5 mg/L PFOS. Hatching was delayed and hatching rates as well as larval survivorship were significantly reduced after the embryos were exposed to 1, 3 and 5 mg/L PFOS until 132 hpf. The fry displayed gross developmental malformations, including epiboly deformities, hypopigmen

Chronic exposure to environmental concentrations of enrofloxacin impairs neutrophil function in zebrafish via HPT axis disruption and hematopoietic dysregulation.

The widespread detection of fluoroquinolone antibiotics like enrofloxacin (ENR) in aquatic ecosystems raises significant concerns about ecological and immunological impacts. While acute ENR toxicity is documented, the immunotoxic effects of chronic, environmentally relevant exposure remain poorly understood. This study investigates the mechanisms by which long-term ENR exposure (28 days at 10-100 μg/L,concentrations reflecting common pollution levels in freshwater systems near aquaculture facilities and extreme contamination scenarios due to wastewater treatment failure) compromises zebrafish

2-Hydroxyanthraquinone exposure causes the damage of cerebrovascular and blood brain barrier in zebrafish via inducing inflammation and downregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

2-Hydroxyanthraquinone (2-hATQ), a photooxidation product of anthracene (ANT) within polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), poses significant risks to ecological safety and human health. ANT is listed as a priority pollutant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) due to its persistence and resistance to degradation in the environment. Consequently, 2-hATQ, inheriting these characteristics from its parent compound, is ubiquitously present in the environment and exhibits greater toxicity than ANT itself. However, research on its toxicological effects, particularly concerning cerebro

Exposure to the trichloroethylene metabolite S-(1,2-dichlorovinyl)-L-cysteine under hypoxic conditions (%O2 =2 %) alters differential gene expression and mitigates decreased invasion capacity, compared to normoxic conditions (%O2 ≥ 21 %) in HTR-8/SVneo cells.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a volatile organic compound used as an industrial solvent until the recent EPA phaseout. Despite regulatory restrictions, legacy TCE pollution persists in soil and groundwater and poses a risk to human health. This chemical exerts its toxic effects through its metabolites including the glutathione conjugation metabolite S-(1,2-dichlorovinyl)-L-cysteine (DCVC). Although a known nephrotoxicant, limited research has explored its effects on placental development - despite a reported epidemiological association between maternal exposure and elevated risk of restricted fet

Humic substances sorption from wastewater on the biochar produced from the waste materials.

In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the possibility of converting waste materials, e.g. manure, bio-waste, green waste, waste from the water and sewage industries (e.g. post-fermentation sludge), and agri-food waste into biochars (BCs) by pyrolysis. The ability of biochar to improve soil health and fertility is driving growing interest in its use as a soil amendment. A high soil stability of BCs and their excellent nutrient sorption properties are the main reasons for the superiority of such materials over other organic soil amendments. In addition, BCs can retain soil-relev

Biomineralization of heavy metals based on urea transport and hydrolysis within a new bacterial isolate, B. intermedia TSBOI.

A newly isolated ureolytic bacteria, Brucella intermedia TSBOI, exhibited microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) which is a promising technique for the remediation of heavy metals in polluted environments. Brucella intermedia TSBOI achieved 90-100% removal of 1 mmol/L Cu2+/Pb2+/Zn2+ within 72 h. A distinctive feature lies in B. intermedia TSBOI's capacity for the transport and hydrolysis of urea, considered to be critical for its strong urease activity. This study explored the mechanisms of this capacity at the genetic, molecular and protein levels through complete genome sequencing,

A new NMVOC speciated inventory for a reactivity-based approach to support ozone control strategies in Spain.

Ozone (O3) pollution is a persistent problem in many regions of Spain, so understanding O3 precursor emissions and trends is essential to design effective control strategies. We estimated the impact of Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOC) species upon O3 formation potential (OFP) using the maximum incremental reactivity approach. For this, we developed a speciated NMVOC emission inventory for Spain from 2010 to 2019 combining national reported emissions with state-of-the-art speciation profiles, which resulted in a database of emissions for over 900 individual NMVOC species and 153 i

The Role of Fecal Microbiota in Liver Toxicity Induced by Perfluorooctane Sulfonate in Male and Female Mice.

BACKGROUND: Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant that can cause hepatotoxicity. The underlying toxicological mechanism remains to be investigated. Given the critical role of fecal microbiota in liver function, it is possible that fecal microbiota may contribute to the liver toxicity induced by PFOS. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the role of liver-fecal microbiota axis in modulating PFOS-induced liver injury in mice. METHODS: Male and female mice were exposed to PFOS or vehicle for 14 d. In this investigation, 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolomic profiling w

Characterization of ingested MPs and their relation with growth parameters of endemic and invasive fish from a coastal wetland.

Microplastic (MP) contamination is a persistent and ubiquitous threat to aquatic ecosystems. This study quantifies MP ingestion by fish inhabiting the Anzali Wetland (Iran), a hotspot of biodiversity. Growth parameters have been monitored in endemic demersal fish (Caspian spined loach, Sabanejewia caspia), and invasive benthopelagic species (Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio) in the wetland and compared with their internal content of MPs. MPs were extracted from the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts following digestion of the samples in alkaline medium and observation of the extracts with microscopy

Optimization of haloacid dehalogenase production by recombinant E. coli BL21 (DE3)/pET-hakp1 containing haloacid dehalogenase gene from Klebsiella pneumoniae ITB1 using Response Surface Methodology (RSM).

Organohalogens, including monochloroacetic acid (MCA), are abundantly synthesized compounds for various industrial purposes. MCA is widely used as a raw material or as an intermediate compound for the production of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, plastics, surfactants, shampoos, liquid soaps, and emulsion agents. Nonetheless, widespread and large-scale utilization of organohalogens might negatively impact life quality as these compounds are toxic to organisms and persistently present in the environment. An effort to decrease the effect of MCA pollutant is by performing bioremediation, taki

Efficient treatment of perfluorohexanoic acid by nanofiltration followed by electrochemical degradation of the NF concentrate.

The present study was aimed at the development of a strategy for removing and degrading perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) from industrial process waters at concentrations in the range 60-200 mg L-1. The treatment train consisted of nanofiltration (NF) separation followed by electrochemical degradation of the NF concentrate. Using a laboratory-scale system and working in the total recirculation mode, the DowFilm NF270 membrane provided PFHxA rejections that varied in the range 96.6-99.4% as the operating pressure was increased from 2.5 to 20 bar. The NF operation in concentration mode enabled a vo
