An Alternative Method of Assessing d/DHH Secondary-School Students' L2 Language Development.

Little information is available on d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/DHH) learners' L2 development. Their limited auditory access may discourage them from taking standardized tests, highlighting the need for alternative ways of assessing their L2 development and proficiency. Therefore, this study suggests adopting processability theory, which demonstrates a universal order of L2 development. Interviews with d/DHH learners and their teachers were conducted to explore their current difficulties in regard to understanding their L2 development. Also, we conducted brief speaking tasks to suggest altern

Sensitivity to punishment and low maternal care account for the link between bulimic and social anxiety symptomology.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the joint effect of personality and parenting factors on the prediction of bulimia nervosa (BN) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) symptomology in a sample of female college students. The study also tested whether personality and parenting factors might account for the association between BN and SAD symptoms. METHOD: One-hundred twenty-eight participants completed self-report measures assessing maternal care (MC), maternal overprotection, sensitivity to punishment (SP), sensitivity to reward (SR), and BN and SAD symptomology. RESULTS: SP, SR, and MC each

Life events in childhood, adolescence and adulthood and the relationship to panic disorder.

The aim of this study was to explore the association between stressful life events (SLE) and the development of panic disorder (PD) in an Israeli sample. A total of 44 PD patients and a matched control group were studied with regard to SLE over the life cycle (in childhood, adolescence, adulthood and the year preceding the outbreak of the disorder). The major findings were as follows. (i) With regard to the total number of life events experienced in childhood and adolescence, the PD group had experienced significantly more life events than the control group. (ii) No differences were detected i

The significance of a history of childhood sexual abuse in bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is found to have occurred to a substantial minority of women with bulimia nervosa. Its clinical significance is unclear. METHOD: We studied 87 bulimic women in a clinical trial. Structured interviews determined the presence of CSA, DSM-III-R disorders, global functioning, and depressive and bulimic symptoms. RESULTS: Forty-four per cent reported a history of CSA. Bulimic women with CSA reported earlier onset of bulimia, greater depressive symptoms, worse global functioning and more suicide attempts, and were more likely to meet criteria for bipolar II

Developmental patterns of expected consequences for simulated bicycle injury events.

Bicycle injuries follow a developmental pattern that differs from that of most injuries, where toddlers and individuals in young adulthood are most at risk. Children in late childhood and early adolescence appear most at risk for bicycle injuries. The present study of 2nd-grade, 4th-grade, 6th-grade, and undergraduate college students documented that after videotaped simulations of bicycle injury events, younger children anticipated greater injury severity and more fear than older children and adolescents. The potential influence of reduced expectations for injury with increasing age is descri

Family functions and children's postdivorce adjustment.

Data on school-age children of divorced parents were examined to determine which dimensions of family dynamics were most associated with the children's socioemotional adjustment. Those factors found to be most significant were family roles, behavior control, and affective involvement, as well as children's reaction to and insight into the divorce, and conflict in the home after the divorce. Implications for parent education and early intervention are discussed.

[Development promoting environment--contributing factors in inpatient psychotherapy of children and adolescents].

Frame conditions especially in stationary psychotherapy with children and adolescents have the function of development-conducive 'play-pens'. As spaces which can be actively formed they offer room to make new experiences, but also serve as limits and friction surfaces with supporting ego-functions. Regarding the developmental phase of adolescence they also serve adolescents in their conflicts with parental authorities in the process of detaching and spiritualization and depersonalization of super-ego structures. Concerning various disorders adequately formed 'play-pens' also fulfill further sp

The relationship between interaction patterns and agoraphobic fears among college students.

In the present study, we investigated the relationships between self-reports of agoraphobic-like anxiety (fear of open, crowded places), panic experiences, childhood separation anxiety, and family interaction patterns in a college student population. The research was conducted in two parts. Correlational analyses of the results of Study 1 revealed significant relationships between anxiety, difficulties in managing life transitions, and measures of family interaction (intergenerational and peer individuation, intergenerational and peer intimacy) as measured by the Personal Authority in the Fami

Health sector spending and spending on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, and development assistance for health: progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3.

BACKGROUND: Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 aims to "ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages". While a substantial effort has been made to quantify progress towards SDG3, less research has focused on tracking spending towards this goal. We used spending estimates to measure progress in financing the priority areas of SDG3, examine the association between outcomes and financing, and identify where resource gains are most needed to achieve the SDG3 indicators for which data are available. METHODS: We estimated domestic health spending, disaggregated by source (gover

What are the economic consequences for households of illness and of paying for health care in low- and middle-income country contexts?

This paper presents the findings of a critical review of studies carried out in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) focusing on the economic consequences for households of illness and health care use. These include household level impacts of direct costs (medical treatment and related financial costs), indirect costs (productive time losses resulting from illness) and subsequent household responses. It highlights that health care financing strategies that place considerable emphasis on out-of-pocket payments can impoverish households. There is growing evidence of households being pushed i

[Psychodynamics and therapy of trichotillomania].

After a short review of the literature, some aspects of the psychodynamics and therapy of trichotillomania with an adolescent patient are presented that up to now have not been described in great detail. Against the backdrop of previous fears of being abandoned, the patient feels threatened that while coping with the developmental tasks of sexuality and aggressiveness she will be dropped once again. This psychodynamically oriented therapy makes it possible for the patient to accept and verbalize the corresponding feelings in a relationship that gives a feeling of security. Therefore, the sympt

Adolescent sexual offenders: a self-psychological perspective.

Following a request for assistance in formulating a treatment philosophy for adolescent sexual offenders, a qualitative study of seven adolescent offenders was designed with a view to elaborating pre-offense, and post-offense dynamics. The point of departure was the hypothesis that sexual offending had relation to object relations. It was further hypothesized that offenders' object relations and self-development had been disfigured in childhood and adolescent development. The developmental theories of Mahler, Stern, Winnicott, and Kohut were reviewed in order to shed light on the connection be

Age of symptom onset in young children with pervasive developmental disorders.

Data from 39 young children with autism or other pervasive developmental disorders were examined to determine the relevance of the age of social symptom onset and language symptom onset to other developmental variables. Contrary to the authors' hypotheses, earlier onset of social symptoms was not indicative of a greater severity of autistic symptoms, retardation, or incidence of insecure attachments. Early speech loss was associated with lower IQ, greater social deficits, and poorer language development, while the presence of useful speech at age 2 was related to better functioning in multiple

Factors associated with the development of psychiatric illness in children with early speech/language problems.

This paper reports on the correlates of psychiatric illness in children with speech and language disorders. Of 600 children selected from a community speech clinic, 50% were found to have diagnosable psychiatric disorders according to DSM-III criteria. These "psychiatrically ill" children were compared to the "psychiatrically well" children in the sample on a variety of developmental, socioeconomic, medical, and psychosocial factors. Although some differences were found between the well and ill children in other factors, the majority of the differences, and the most highly significant differen

The developmental consequence of different patterns of maltreatment.

From a longitudinal study of 267 high risk families, four different patterns of maltreatment were identified. The mothers have been tested, interviewed and observed in a number of situations starting during the last trimester of pregnancy and continuing at regularly scheduled intervals through the preschool period. The four maltreatment groups were: physical abuse; hostile/verbally abusive; psychologically unavailable; and neglecting. A control group of mothers who provided adequate care was selected from the remaining high risk sample. In an earlier follow-up, among the maltreated children a

Psychological risk factors for dissociation and self-mutilation in female patients with borderline personality disorder.

The purposes of this study were to determine whether or not dissociation in female patients suffering from personality disorder is related to sexual and physical abuse or to abuse parameters and whether or not self-mutilation in the personality disorders is related to psychological risk factors or to dissociation. The sample was divided into 78 borderline and 72 nonborderline personality disorders. Psychological risk factors were measured through histories of childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse and separation or loss as well as scores on the Parental Bonding Index. Dissociation was measured

Exploring the association between emotional abuse and childhood borderline personality features: the moderating role of personality traits.

Most of the extant literature on borderline personality disorder has focused on the course, consequences, and correlates of this disorder among adults. However, little is known about childhood borderline personality (BP) features, or the factors associated with the emergence of BP pathology in childhood. A greater understanding of childhood BP features and associated risk factors has important implications for the development of primary and secondary prevention programs. The goal of the present study was to examine the interrelationships among two BP-relevant traits (affective dysfunction and

Trait Stability and Continuity in Childhood: Relating Sociability and Hostility to the Five-Factor Model of Personality.

We investigated the continuity of personality constructs in the Oregon Youth Substance Use Project, a cohort-sequential study encompassing development from early childhood to adolescence with five annual or biennial assessments. Sociability and Hostility, assessed by teachers' ratings of children's behaviors at each assessment, were related to the traits comprising the Five-Factor model assessed by teachers' ratings at the fifth assessment. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that Sociability and Hostility were reliably measured at each assessment, and these constructs were relatively st

Response to sexual assault: a relational perspective.

It has been suggested that although the severity of the stressor is the primary determinant of acute posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, pre-existing personality patterns may be the primary contributors to the development of chronic PTSD symptomatology. The authors postulate that of the multiple personality factors that influence behavior and response to traumatic events, relational capacity or the ability to sustain interpersonal relationships provides an overarching construct for understanding the contribution of social contextual factors to post-trauma response. The results of th
