Autonomic characteristics of nonclinical panic and blood phobia.

Autonomic characteristics of nonclinical panic and blood phobia were compared using spectral analysis of the electrocardiogram (EKG), as well as more conventional cardiovascular measures. The cardiovascular responses of 11 subjects who reported recent occurrence of frequent severe panic attacks, and 10 subjects who reported intense somatic reactions to the sight of blood (including episodes of syncope) were recorded during a variety of laboratory tasks (quiet rest, reaction time/shock avoidance, face immersion, and combined reaction time/face immersion). Results suggest distinct autonomic patt

Gender effects and alcohol use in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

Previous studies have found some significant, but weak, gender differences in panic and agoraphobia with females generally being more symptomatic. The present study sought to expand this line of research by examining alcohol use and self-medication in relation to gender differences and measures of psychopathology. Seventy-four male and 162 female patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia were compared. There were some significant, but relatively small, gender differences with females reporting higher levels of phobic avoidance. Males reported significantly more weekly alcohol intake and al

The validity of the DSM-III posttraumatic stress disorder classification as applied to children.

Tested three groups of children: The first group (n = 231) presented with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the second group (n = 32) presented with simple phobia (i.e., test phobia), and the third group (n = 35) was made up of nonclinical controls. The subjects marked the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and their conduct was rated against the Conners Teacher Rating Scale (CTRS) criteria. A MANOVA evinced significant group and gender differences. No significant interaction effects were noted. Univariate F tests and Bonferroni posttes

Dizziness in Europe: from licensed fitness to drive to licence without fitness to drive.

A common European Community driving licence was established in 1980. However, there are major differences among the countries as regards medical conditions that legally affect driving ability. This article discusses various assessment guidelines for dizzy patients. These range from a total absence of specified binding requirements in Finland or regulations open to clinical interpretation in Switzerland, to inappropriately strict regulations in Germany. We focus on requirements for patients with vestibular disorders in Germany which have been in force since 2014. These guidelines stipulate that

Automated classification of neurological disorders of gait using spatio-temporal gait parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Automated pattern recognition systems have been used for accurate identification of neurological conditions as well as the evaluation of the treatment outcomes. This study aims to determine the accuracy of diagnoses of (oto-)neurological gait disorders using different types of automated pattern recognition techniques. METHODS: Clinically confirmed cases of phobic postural vertigo (N = 30), cerebellar ataxia (N = 30), progressive supranuclear palsy (N = 30), bilateral vestibulopathy (N = 30), as well as healthy subjects (N = 30) were recruited for the study. 8 measurements with 136

[Vertigo and dizziness: the neurologist's perspective].

The spectrum of diagnoses of patients with dizziness as the leading symptom who consult a neurologist does not differ greatly from the spectrum of those who consult ear nose and throat (ENT) specialists or general practitioners (GP). The most frequent forms are benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV), phobic postural vertigo, central vertigo disorders, Menière's disease, vestibular neuritis and bilateral vestibulopathy. However, the first and most important question that is posed to neurologists is whether it is a central or peripheral syndrome. In more than 90 % of cases this differentia

Neurocircuit function in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are serious psychosomatic disorders with high morbidity and lifetime mortality. Inadequate response to current therapeutic interventions constitutes a challenging clinical problem. A better understanding of the underlying neurobiological mechanisms could improve psychotherapeutic and drug treatment strategies. METHOD: A review highlighting the current state of brain imaging in eating disorders related to the anxiety and pathological fear learning model of anorexia nervosa (AN) and the impulsivity model of binge eating in bulimia nervosa (BN). A lost track in ICHD 3 beta: A comprehensive review on osmophobia.

Background Osmophobia (Os) has been reported to be much more prevalent in migraine (M) than in other primary headaches, and its high specificity in the differential diagnosis between M and tension-type headache (TTH) has been reported. Os was included in the ICHD II Appendix as a diagnostic criterion of M. It disappeared in ICHD-3 beta. To understand this choice, we reviewed the literature after 2004. Methods This was a systematic review. We searched in PubMed, MEDLINE and Cochrane library for "osmophobia", "odour/odorphobia AND headache", "odour/odor hypersensitivity AND headache" and "olfact

Behavior as information: "If I avoid, then there must be a danger".

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive models of anxiety disorders view safety-seeking behaviors (i.e., avoidance, washing, etc.) as playing a crucial role in the maintenance of irrational fear. An explanation of how these behaviors may contribute to the maintenance of unrealistic beliefs is that patients use their safety behaviors as a source of information about the situation (behavior as information): the behavior is clear evidence of the danger. This study investigates whether, relative to non-clinical control participants, anxious participants actually infer danger on the basis of their saf

The role of emotion regulation in the treatment of child anxiety disorders.

In this review, we examine the role of emotion regulation in the treatment of children with anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to "work" for children with anxiety disorders and it has been categorized as an evidence-based treatment. However, most studies have shown that the treatment is effective for about 60-70% of children, leaving the remaining children symptomatic and oftentimes with persisting psychological disorders. Of importance, it has also been shown that many children with anxiety disorders demonstrate poor emotion regulation skills. Despite these f

Social phobia and the recall of autobiographical memories.

Although cognitive theories of anxiety suggest that anxious individuals are characterized by the biased tendency to recall negative experiences with perceived threat, few empirical studies have confirmed this notion. To investigate personal memories associated with threatening experiences, individuals with socio phobia (n=16) and nonanxious individuals (n=17) completed an autobiographical memory-cueing procedure. Participants were presented with 15 social threat words and 15 neutral words, and they recorded the first specific memory that came to mind. Autobiographical memories were coded for s

Tricyclic therapy of the DSM-III anxiety disorders: a review with implications for further research.

Existing data suggests dramatic efficacy for all tested tricyclics in disorders involving spontaneous panic attacks; moderate efficacy for clomipramine but not other tricyclics in obsessive-compulsive patients; possible, but as yet not well established, tricyclic efficacy in generalized anxiety; and lack of efficacy in simple phobias. Further studies in all DSM-III Anxiety Disorders are both warranted and required to answer the nosological, pathophysiological and treatment questions raised by these findings.

Effect of evaluation timing and duration of anxiety-like behaviors induced by conditioned fear in rats: Assessment using the triple test.

The fear conditioning-based models of anxiety disorders have been widely used for assessing anxiolytic action. The triple test is an evaluation method for anxiety-like behaviors that integrates the open field, elevated plus maze, and light/dark box, which can comprehensively reflect the anxiety-like behaviors state of animals. However, there are many factors that can affect the evaluation results of anxiety-like behaviors, especially the time of day (morning or afternoon), which are often ignored by most experimental studies. Accordingly, in the present study, we first measured the anxiety-lik

Seizure phobia: A distinct psychiatric disorder among people with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is characterized by unpredictable attacks. Hence, people with epilepsy (PWE) may develop anxious anticipation of upcoming seizures. Seizure phobia is an anxiety disorder wherein seizure anticipatory situations trigger fear, accompanied by avoidance behaviors. Research on seizure phobia among PWE is scarce. Therefore, we aimed to describe the diagnosis of seizure phobia and its association with demographic, psychiatric and neurological variables. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of adult PWE in a tertiary epilepsy outpatient clinic. Data were collected from semi-str
