VEP projections in congenital nystagmus; VEP asymmetry in albinism: a comparison study.

Visual evoked potential (VEP) asymmetry in which a preponderance of nasal and temporal retina afferents project to the contralateral hemisphere after full-field monocular stimulation is considered specific to albinism. Some reports, however, suggest that patients with congenital nystagmus (CN) share the albino-like visual pathway anomaly. To examine the clinical specificity of albino misrouting, VEP topography was assessed in ten patients with congenital nystagmus and in ten age-matched albino patients. As an additional control, the VEP response profiles from eight albino patients with no nyst

Human ocular torsional position before and after unilateral vestibular neurectomy.

The static ocular torsional position of both eyes of 23 patients was measured by means of fundus photographs one day before and one week after unilateral vestibular neurectomy for the treatment of acoustic neuroma, Ménière's disease or paroxysmal vertigo. The results showed that in all patients the vestibular neurectomy caused both eyes to tort (i.e. to roll around the visual axis) toward the side of the neurectomy when measured one week after operation. The extent of this torsion was an average of 9.5 degrees one week after operation and there was no statistically significant difference in th

[Experimental study of the whole body response in rabbits by linear oscillatory acceleration and/or optokinetic stimulation].

Motion sickness may be defined as an abnormal body response caused to certain kinds of motion in normal subjects. Although we know etiologic factors and symptoms of motion sickness, the mechanism of motion sickness remains unknown. To clarify some characteristics of motion sickness in rabbits, we observed responses of the autonomic nervous system consisting of a change in heart rate (HR), coefficient of variation of R-R interval (CV-RR), and serum adrenaline (AD) -and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations during linear oscillatory acceleration and/or optokinetic stimulation. The following resul

Electroretinographic findings in inherited ataxias.

Electroretinogram was performed in 18 patients with inherited ataxias. Eight had Friedreich's disease, 9 autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia and one early onset cerebellar ataxia with retained tendon reflexes. Abnormalities were found in one patient for each group. The most frequent were decreased b-wave amplitude in photopic and scotopic conditions and prolonged implicit time.

Hypersensitivity to light of the iris (Sphincter pupillae) of the albino axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum).

As is common for amphibians, the sphincter pupillae of the axolotl contracts in vitro in response to illumination with visible light. 1. In a comparison of photomechanical responses of albino and normally pigmented axolotls, similar time courses and maxima of force development were found. 2. The dependence of isometric active force development on the length of the sphincter pupillae is similar to that of other smooth muscles. 3. The action spectrum of the axolotl is similar to the absorption spectrum of frog rhodopsin. 4. At low stimulus strengths, the increase of normalized, isometric, active

Visual evoked blink reflex in optic neuritis.

The optically evoked blink reflex (BR) was recorded in 30 patients (20 females, 10 males) with primary acute optic neuritis (ON) unassociated with other CNS disorders. The reflex was studied in the acute stage between the 1st and 6th day after onset, during the 1st month following the acute stage once a week, and then 2 and 6 months later. In patients in whom a relapse occurred, the programme was restarted from the beginning. Control values were taken from prior investigations in 50 healthy subjects. In the acute stage differences in the amplitudes were present in 26 patients, but the latencie

Measures of auditory evoked potentials during optokinetic stimulation.

In this investigation auditory brainstem responses (ABR) elicited by click stimuli were recorded before, during, and after optokinetic stimulation in subjects that were (N = 10) or were not (N = 10) prone to visually induced motion sickness. The latency of Wave I, and the I-III and I-V interwave intervals were measured. A significant increase in the I-III interwave interval occurred only during optokinetic stimulation. Neither the Wave I latency nor the interwave interval differed with respect to subject groups and this factor did not interact with any other variables. These results suggest th

Motion sensitivity in central and peripheral vision.

The visual resolution of motion is important both for indicating the presence of moving objects and for assisting locomotion and spatial orientation. Additionally, motion may enhance the visibility of low contrast features of the environment. For patients with reduced central vision, these functions may be especially significant as the detection of motion is superior to the ability to resolve stationary detail in peripheral vision. The present paper analyzes the effects of specific stimulus variables on motion sensitivity in both central and peripheral vision. Implications of these findings fo

Non corneal closed eye electroretinography in healthy persons and in patients with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (Stengel-Batten-Spielmeyer-Vogt disease).

Non corneal "closed eye" ERG was recorded with surface skin electrodes in 22 healthy subjects and in 7 patients with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (Stengel-Batten-Spielmeyer-Vogt disease). Non corneal "closed eye" ERG was present in all normal subjects and the records comprised all the main subcomponents reported in the conventional corneal ERG. While the latencies of the a and b waves in the normal subjects differed but slightly from those reported from corneal ERGs, the amplitudes were reduced in the non corneal "closed eye" ERG. The parameters of the non corneal "closed eye" ERGs in the he

[Some problems in electroperimetric investigation by means of visual evoked cortical potentials (author's transl)].

The authors discuss problems of localized retinal stimulation including the influence of stray light in cases of electroperimetry by means of VECP. The present study shows that we can successfully perform electroperimetric investigation under certain conditions. This is confirmed by investigation of visual field defects in a case of Arachnitis optico chiasmatica.

[Methods and evaluation of visually evoked EEG potentials in cases of suspected multiple sclerosis (author's transl)].

In multiple sclerosis, average EEG potentials which are monocularly evoked by checkerboard pattern reversal frequently show increased latencies of the dominant, occipitally positive peak (more than 110 ms), and latency differences of more than 6--7 ms between responses to right and left eye stimulation. Fixation of the stimulus field at the lower border causes significantly longer latencies and smaller amplitudes than fixation at the upper border. With lower border fixation, the increase of response latency may suggest a reversal of response polarity in extreme cases. Central fixation often bu

Prognostic value of visual evoked potentials in occipital blindness following basilar artery occlusion.

Three patients suffering from sudden occipital blindness following basilar artery occlusion underwent electroretinography and visual evoked potential (VEP) examinations. The VEPs performed early in those blind patients and repeated later seem to be of prognostic value. Responses of normal shape and amplitude after monocular and binocular stimulation were followed by complete recovery of vision. Unequal and subnormal VEPs obtained following monocular stimulation, and even smaller responses reached after binocular stimulation, accompanied permanent unilateral occipital damage resulting in homony

Non-conscious modulation of cardiac defense by masked phobic pictures.

The present study investigated the modulation of cardiac defense by presenting emotional pictures under both effective and non-effective masking procedures. The aim was to test Ohman's model of pre-attentive processing of fear. Participants were 48 women volunteers with intense fear of spiders. The stimulus to elicit cardiac defense was a white noise of 105 dB, 500 ms duration and instantaneous risetime. Subjects had two trials of picture-noise presentation-one with a picture of a spider and one with a picture of a flower-, either under an effective masking procedure (30 ms duration) or a non-

Auditory compensation for early blindness in cat cerebral cortex.

Single-neuron activity was recorded in the caudal part of the anterior ectosylvian (AE) cortex of cats that had been deprived of vision for several years by means of binocular lid suture shortly after birth and in normal control animals. Over 300 neurons were tested in each group with auditory, visual, and somatosensory stimuli. We confirmed the existence of an anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV) in the fundus and ventral bank of the AE sulcus. Neurons in AEV had purely visual responses in normal cats. In visually deprived cats, by contrast, only a minority of cells in this area still respo
