[Psychological group approach for organ transplant recipients - a pilot project].

Psychological distress is common in patients after solid organ transplantation and often motivates psychological and psychiatric consultations. Due to its clinical and economic potential, the CHUV has been offering a group therapy for solid organ transplant recipients since 2022. Patients use the sessions to talk about their feelings of stigmatization or fear of contamination, but also about their need for a balance between overstepping some limits and rigorous discipline regarding medication intake and precautions to be taken. They talk about issues they usually do not discuss with the variou

CGMacros: a pilot scientific dataset for personalized nutrition and diet monitoring.

Tracking food intake is key to using nutrition to prevent or manage common diseases including type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity. Several datasets are publicly available to promote research in diet monitoring, but generally contain data from a limited set of sensors (e.g., accelerometry, food images), which limits their application to specific use cases such as activity recognition or image recognition. Also lacking are publicly available datasets with food macronutrients and their associated continuous glucose measurements; datasets containing such rich information are proprietary. To address

Inflammation biomarkers and Alzheimer's disease: A pilot study using NULISAseq.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence links amyloid beta (Aβ) aggregation with inflammation. This pilot study investigated the use of an immunoassay panel to map biomarker changes in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Furthermore, we evaluated the stability of protein quantification after multiple freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). METHODS: The nucleic acid-linked immuno-sandwich assay (NULISA) inflammation panel measured 203 proteins in serum samples of individuals with (n = 31) and without (n = 31) AD pathology. Linear models, adjusted for age and sex, contrasted protein expression across groups.

Supragingival Microbiota Alterations in Individuals With Sleep Bruxism: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep bruxism (SB) is an oral behaviour associated to jaw clenching or grinding of the teeth. Its aetiology is most likely multifactorial; however, recent studies suggested that SB is associated with activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Dysbiosis of the oral microbiota is linked to oral and systemic diseases. The relationship between supragingival microbiota and SB remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between SB and the composition of the supragingival microbiota. METHODS: Nineteen metabolically and orally healthy subjects were r

Creatine monohydrate pilot in Alzheimer's: Feasibility, brain creatine, and cognition.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies suggest that creatine monohydrate (CrM) improves cognition and Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers. However, there is currently no clinical evidence demonstrating the effects of CrM in patients with AD. METHODS: In this single-arm pilot trial, we investigated the feasibility of 20 g/day CrM for 8 weeks in 20 patients with AD. We measured compliance throughout; serum creatine at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks; and brain total creatine (tCr) and cognition (National Institutes of Health [NIH] Toolbox, Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]) at baseline and 8 weeks.

Reconditioning Emotional Responses With the Break Method: Pilot Quantitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The Break Method is a structured, behavior-based emotional reconditioning program designed to help individuals gain insight into patterns of emotional dysregulation and reprogram behavioral responses rooted in past experiences. Although it has been widely adopted in private and small-group settings, empirical evidence supporting its effectiveness remains limited. With increasing interest in accessible, scalable, and personalized mental health interventions, evaluating the outcomes of such programs is essential for informing future implementation and research. OBJECTIVE: This pilot

Metabolomic and immunophenotypic signatures in cerebral amyloid angiopathy: a pilot study.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a common yet underdiagnosed disease of the small brain vessels, resulting in acute vascular events as well as subcortical neurodegeneration. Currently, it is identified only at advanced stages due to the limitations of non-invasive diagnostic tools. Our pilot study evaluates metabolic and immune alterations in stroke patients with imaging-confirmed CAA. This prospective cohort study included stroke patients admitted to the University Hospital Erlangen with CAA diagnosis based on MRI findings. Metabolomic analysis of cerebrospinal fluid and serum samples was

Pilot of interactive texting for diabetes self-management education and support.

BACKGROUND: Controlling type 2 diabetes requires medication adherence, monitoring blood sugar, weight management, and dietary and physical activity behaviors. Estimates link a 1% reduction in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) to up to a 40% decrease in complications. Accessible supports for self-management behaviors can help increase adherence and lower HbA1c. However, uninsured and low-income populations may experience unique self-management challenges and have limited access to self-management supports. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a pharmacist

Nonverbal behavior in prognostic communication: A pilot experiment in virtual reality.

CONTEXT: Clinicians' nonverbal behaviors contribute to patients' responses to prognosis communication, yet little empirical evidence supports precise nonverbal behaviors and the mechanisms by which they contribute to perceptions of high-quality communication. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool for researching communication, allowing researchers to manipulate nonverbal behaviors in controlled simulation and examine outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this pilot study was to assess whether manipulated changes in avatar doctors' nonverbal behaviors could lead to measurable differences of par

A pilot study of impulsivity and subjective alcohol response in the lab and moment.

Impulsivity and individual differences in alcohol sensitivity (e.g., subjective response to alcohol) have been related to alcohol use behaviors, but scant research has examined how these two constructs are related to each other. Consequently, this pilot study aimed (1) to examine associations between impulsivity domains (impulsive action, impulsive choice, and impulsive personality features) and alcohol sensitivity during alcohol administration in the laboratory; (2) to test daily associations between impulsivity domains and sensitivity to reward during ecological momentary assessment (EMA); a
