What rural residents want from blood donation services: a discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: Blood donation rates are low in Nigeria, and not much is known about rural residents' preferences for blood services. Understanding what these residents want could lead to improved blood donation rates. This study aimed to determine rural residents' preferences for attributes of blood donation services in Igbo-Ora, Nigeria. METHODS: A thorough literature search and a focus group discussion with selected medical laboratory scientists were used to identify the attributes and their levels. A multi-stage sampling method was employed in selecting 150 respondents for the study. Nine cho

The Landscape of Genomic and Socioeconomic Variables in Patients with Colorectal Cancer Based on Genetic Ancestry.

BACKGROUND: Despite differences in tumor alterations across genetic ancestries, investigations of the colorectal cancer molecular landscape have used self-reported ethnicity instead of genetic ancestry. METHODS: We used tumor and matched normal whole-exome sequencing data from 16,388 patients with stage I to IV colorectal cancer to investigate colorectal cancer's germline and somatic molecular landscape and the potential influence of socioeconomic factors (Distressed Communities Index, DCI) across diverse genetic ancestries. Genetic ancestry determined via supervised local ancestry inference

Community-Defined Challenges: A Five-Year Qualitative Needs and Resources Assessment in Vulnerable Latino Populations of Miami-Dade County.

BACKGROUND: Miami-Dade County ranks first in Florida for HIV cases, yet broad epidemiological data often masks the "on-the-ground" reality of its most vulnerable residents. While standard reports suggest declining domestic violence, these statistics fail to account for community-defined health crises-the "SAVA" syndemic (substance use, violence, and HIV/AIDS)-occurring within localized micro-communities. METHODS: Leveraging five years of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and Grounded Theory, this study engaged 97 community members and leaders to unmask these hidden burdens. We emp

'I felt like I just belonged': urban multiculture and black Irish migrants in post-war Britain.

This article reevaluates historians' understanding of the Irish in post-war Britain from the perspective of a previously unresearched population, black and mixed-race Irish migrants. Writing on the Irish in Britain has lingered on themes such as stereotyping, discrimination, and ethnic profiling. More widely, some historians have framed Irish emigration and the diaspora around motifs of exile and reluctant departure, while others have highlighted the liberating potential of departure. Oral histories with black Irish migrants fall firmly into the latter, emancipatory camp, depicting urban, mult

Examining Sexual Health Organizational Networks in Urban African American Communities Using Social Network Theory.

PURPOSE: Collaboration among organizations offering sexual health and youth development services has the potential to provide youth with effective sexual health support. However, formally structured efforts (eg, coalition formation) may be impractical or unsuitable for low-income communities where resources are often already limited. Social network theories provide an alternative approach for building collaborative organizational networks. APPROACH: Research aims to evaluate the barriers and facilitators to collaboration in sexual health organizational networks. SETTING: Organizations in low

Exploring sociocultural factors and ubuntuism for women living with HIV in rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The focus of this study was on women living with HIV in rural Zimbabwe, who face many challenges, both in the family and community. Patriarchy compounds these problems as these women navigate access to health and other services. OBJECTIVES: The study sought to explore ubuntuism and the sociocultural factors that facilitate or constrain women living with HIV from accessing community services and resources. METHOD: An interpretive phenomenological analysis research design was utilised for the study. Purposive and quota sampling were applied to recruit 40 participants from six villa

Healthcare professionals' views of palliative care for American war veterans with non-malignant respiratory disease living in a rural area: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lung diseases, such as COPD, are a growing health concern within the veteran population. Palliative care programs have mainly focused on the needs of people with malignant disease in the past, however the majority of those worldwide needing palliative care have a non-malignant diagnosis. Additionally, palliative care provision can often be fragmented and varied dependent upon a patient's geographical location. This study aimed to explore palliative care provision for veterans with non-malignant respiratory disease, and their family carers, living in a rural area of America.

Cluster randomised controlled trial to determine the effect of peer delivery HIV self-testing to support linkage to HIV prevention among young women in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: A cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) to determine whether HIV self-testing (HIVST) delivered by peers either directly or through incentivised peer-networks, could increase the uptake of antiretroviral therapy and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among young women (18 to 24 years) is being undertaken in an HIV hyperendemic area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A three-arm cRCT started mid-March 2019, in 24 areas in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Twenty-four pairs of peer navigators working with ~12 000 young people aged 18 to 30 years over a period of 6 months w

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of a Musical Cognitive Restructuring App for Black Inner-City Girls: Survey, Usage, and Focus Group Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Research on mobile health (mHealth) app use during adolescence is growing; however, little attention has been paid to black adolescents, particularly black girls, who are generally underresearched and underserved in psychological intervention research. Cognitive restructuring is an important tool in anxiety and fear management and involves two parts: (1) recognizing and deconstructing erroneous thoughts and (2) replacing negative anxiety and stress-provoking thoughts with positive thoughts. In our work with black adolescent females, we found that cognitive restructuring is a diffic

Predictors of Cardiac Rehabilitation Initiation and Adherence in a Multiracial Urban Population.

BACKGROUND: Lack of initiation and adherence to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) remains a persistent problem. We sought to examine predictors of initiation, adherence, and completion of CR in a unique, minority predominant, urban population. METHODS: We included all patients who were first-time referred to the outpatient CR program at Montefiore Medical Center between 1997 and 2010. The indications for referral included acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, heart failure, stable angina, and valvular heart disease. Adherence was defined as attendance of at least 18 sessions of CR,

Mapping human risk of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the agent of Lyme borreliosis, in a periurban forest in France.

Lyme borreliosis is a major zoonosis in Europe, with estimates of over 26,000 cases per year in France alone. The etiological agents are spirochete bacteria that belong to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.) complex and are transmitted by hard ticks among a large range of vertebrate hosts. In Europe, the tick Ixodes ricinus is the main vector. In the absence of a vaccine and given the current difficulties to diagnose and treat chronic Lyme syndromes, there is urgent need for prevention. In this context, accurate information on the spatial patterns of risk of exposure to ticks is of pri

Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in synanthropic rodents in two rural communities of Yucatán, México.

INTRODUCTION: Lyme disease is a multisystemic zoonotic disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. This spirochete circulates in an enzootic cycle between the primary vertebrate reservoir and its tick vectors. Different species of rodents are known to be efficient natural reservoirs for B. burgdorferi s.l. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. in synanthropic rodents from two rural communities of Yucatán, México. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 123 rodents (94 Mus musculus and 29 Rattus rattus) were trapped, and ear and bladder samples were collected. Flagelin

Strategies to balance fidelity to Housing First principles with local realities: lessons from a large urban centre.

The importance of program implementation in achieving desired outcomes is well-documented, but there remains a need for concrete guidance on how to achieve fidelity to evidence-based models within dynamic local contexts. Housing First (HF), an evidence-based model for people experiencing homelessness and mental illness, provides an important test-case for such guidance; it targets a uniquely underserved subpopulation with complex needs, and is delivered by practitioners with varying knowledge and skill levels. Scientific evidence affirms HF's effectiveness, but its rapid dissemination has outp

Factors that influence the characteristics of needles and syringes used by people who inject drugs in Tajikistan.

BACKGROUND: "Low dead space" syringes with permanently attached needles retain less fluid, blood, and HIV after use than standard "high dead space" syringes. This reduces the probability of HIV transmission if they are shared by people who inject drugs (PWID). The World Health Organization recently recommended that needle and syringe programs (NSP) offer clients low dead space syringes. The success of this recommendation will depend on PWID switching to low dead space needles and syringes. This paper examines the needles and syringes that PWID in Tajikistan use and factors that influence their
