Metabolic and liver enzyme correlates of serum alpha-fetoprotein in a large health check-up population.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations of metabolic-liver enzyme phenotypes with serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations and to evaluate the individual and joint associations of key metabolic and liver enzyme indicators with AFP. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 417,535 adults undergoing routine health examinations at the Health Management Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College between 2017 and 2023. Participants were classified into four metabolic-liver enzyme phenotypes: metabolically healthy with normal liver enzymes (MHNE), metabolically un

A Population-Based Study on Childhood Aplastic Anemia-Incidence, Outcomes, and Health-Related Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: Childhood aplastic anemia (AA) is a rare disease, and both the disease itself and its treatment cause significant morbidity. We aimed to determine the contemporary incidence of childhood AA in Finland, to compare the clinical characteristics of AA against inherited bone marrow failure syndromes (IBMFS) and refractory cytopenia of childhood (RCC) fulfilling the Camitta criteria for AA, and to describe survival outcomes and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following childhood bone marrow failure. PROCEDURE: Our cohort study included all 52 Finnish children fulfilling the class

A population-based study of obstructive sleep apnea: using probabilistic case ascertainment through health administrative databases.

BACKGROUND: Although polysomnography (PSG) is the diagnostic gold standard, PSG data on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) presence and severity are rarely available at the population level. Health administrative databases offer broad coverage for OSA case ascertainment but require methods that address inherent misclassification. We utilized a previously validated probabilistic case ascertainment model of OSA to estimate population-level prevalence and correlates of OSA. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study in Ontario, Canada. First, using a clinical cohort with PSG-

Bone infection in a wild capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) from Northeastern Argentina: implications for population health monitoring.

Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris is the largest extant rodent in the world. It is an iconic mammal of the tropical and subtropical wetlands of South America, with significant importance in the ecosystems of northeastern Argentina. Although several diseases affecting capybaras in wild and in captivity have been reported-mainly of bacterial, metabolic, parasitic, and viral origin-bone pathologies remain undocumented. This study presents a macroscopic and radiological analysis of skeletal lesions observed in a road-killed capybara from Corrientes Province, Argentina. The specimen exhibited a marked lesi

Allostatic load and cardiometabolic health in a young adult South African population: the African-PREDICT study.

Sustained stress, assessed as a high allostatic load score (ALS), is an independent cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor in older adults but its associations in young people are undefined. Since neurological maturation impacts stress adaptation and CVD risk, we assessed the relationship of ALS with CVD profile by using a tiered approach stratified by age [emerging adults (EA) aged 20-24 yr vs. young adults (YA) aged 25-30 yr] and ALS (high vs. low). In 1,054 healthy participants of the African Prospective Study on Early Detection and Identification of Cardiovascular Disease and Hypertensio

Cardiovascular Medication and Health Service Use in Individuals With Cancer: A Retrospective Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) frequently coexist, but little is known about CVD medication use in cancer survivors. The aim of this study was to compare CVD medication and medical service use between individuals with and without cancer. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study linking Australian National Health Survey 2020-2021 data from participants aged ≥ 25 years to medication dispensing, medical services, and death registry data via the Multi-Agency Data Integration Project. Logistic regression was used to compare patterns of CVD medication use between cancer and non-canc

Loneliness, laughter, and mental health in the Japanese general population: findings from a cross-sectional study.

Little is known about the link between laughter and loneliness in the general population. This is a significant omission given that both phenomena may be important for health. This study examined the loneliness-laughter association in Japanese adults and whether laughter is important for mental health in lonely individuals. Data were analyzed from 3,551 adults who participated in an online survey in 2023. Loneliness was assessed with the Three-Item Loneliness Scale, while a single question was used to obtain information on laughter status. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to

Self-control during childhood and mental health at age 15-16: a longitudinal population-based study.

Low self-control in adults is associated with a broad range of negative outcomes. However, studies on the long-term impact of low self-control on mental health outcomes in youth are limited. We examined associations between low self-control during childhood (age 5-12) and mental health in adolescence (age 15-16), with specific interest for gender differences and whether conduct problems acts as a mediator. Data from a longitudinal birth cohort (Amsterdam Born Children and their Development) study was used (n = 1775). We scored self-control using items from the Strengths and Difficulties Questi

Association Between Loneliness and Mental Health Treatment Utilization in a Prison-Based Substance Use Treatment Population.

This article examines mental health service use among 395 incarcerated individuals with opioid use disorder in 14 prison-based substance use programs, as part of the Geographic Variation in Addiction Treatment Experiences Study. It explores how mental health symptoms and loneliness relate to service utilization using two multivariate logistic regression models for before incarceration and during incarceration. Utilization rose from 19% before incarceration to 38% during incarceration. While 78% of individuals met criteria for depression and 58% met criteria for anxiety, neither predicted servi

Exploring digital health literacy clusters in a Norwegian stroke survivor population-A cross-sectional study (NORFAST).

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies play a pivotal role in stroke prevention and rehabilitation. However, variations in digital health literacy (DHL) among stroke survivors may impede effective use of these tools. Understanding DHL-profiles and their influencing factors is essential for tailoring interventions. AIM: This study aimed to identify DHL-profiles among stroke survivors and possible associations with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 177 first-time stroke patients (2021-2022) from the Norwegian stroke registry. DHL

Contribution of an under-recognized adversity to child health risk: large-scale, population-based ACEs screening.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Whereas adverse early life experiences (ACEs) correlate with cognitive, emotional and physical health at the population level, existing ACEs screens are only weakly predictive of outcomes for an individual child. This raises the possibility that important elements of the early-life experiences that drive vulnerability and resilience are not being captured. We previously demonstrated that unpredictable parental and household signals constitute an ACE with cross-cultural relevance. We created the 5-item Questionnaire of Unpredictability in Childhood (QUIC-5) that can b

The associations between diet-induced inflammation and health outcomes: a population-based phenome-wide association study.

Evidence linking the dietary inflammatory index (DII) to health outcomes remains inconsistent and limited. This study assessed the associations between DII and 845 health outcomes (N = 78,390 to 207,832), identifying 133 outcomes significantly associated with DII after multiple comparison correction (PFDR < 0.05). Most of these health outcomes pertained to the digestive, circulatory, and endocrine/metabolic systems. Using the genetic instrument rs7910002, significantly associated with DII at the genome-wide level (P < 5 × 10-8), Mendelian randomization (MR) phenome-wide association analysis (N

Health and healthcare use of homeless population: Evaluation study of joint social work and healthcare provision.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness as an extreme form of poverty perpetuates and exacerbates health inequalities. People experiencing homelessness face a mortality rate 10 times higher than that of the general population, with an average age of death at 45. There is a significant disconnect between the mainstream healthcare system and the specific health needs of people experiencing homelessness, leading to substantial human and economic costs. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this evaluation study is to assess the impact of an intervention in nurse-led healthcare outreach services to people experiencing ho

Predicting Participation Willingness in Ecological Momentary Assessment of General Population Health and Behavior: Machine Learning Study.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is widely used in health research to capture individuals' experiences in the flow of daily life. The majority of EMA studies, however, rely on nonprobability sampling approaches, leaving open the possibility of nonrandom participation concerning the individual characteristics of interest in EMA research. Knowledge of the factors that predict participation in EMA research is required to evaluate this possibility and can also inform optimal recruitment strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the extent to which being willing to partic
