Chronic bed rest (BR) serves as a model for studying the effects of prolonged immobility on physiological and neuromotor functions, particularly postural control. Prolonged BR leads to significant deconditioning of postural balance control, characterized by increased sway path lengths, sway velocity and fall risk, independent of muscle strength. These changes are linked to neural adaptations at spinal and supraspinal levels, including structural and functional brain changes, such as alterations in grey and white matter, increased cerebellar activation, reduced spinal excitability and increased

Proprioception declines with age, increasing the risk of falls in older adults. Conditions such as osteoporosis, which are highly prevalent in this population, further increase both the risk of falls and the severity of resulting injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate a 3-week NeuroMuscolar Taping treatment to improve postural control in 10 older adults (> 65 y.o.) with mild osteoporosis. Electroencephalography (EEG) and center of pressure (CoP) signals were recorded during a sensory orientation task of the Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test before (T0) and after (T1) treatment. Non

Postural hypotension (also known as orthostatic hypotension) is a common but often underrecognized condition, particularly prevalent among the elderly. Despite its frequency, its clinical significance is sometimes underestimated in routine clinical practice. Failure to recognize this condition can lead to repeated hospitalizations, unnecessary treatments, and increased healthcare costs. We report the case of a 79-year-old male who presented to us with multiple stroke-like episodes in the past six months. He underwent multiple CT scans of the brain/neck and MRI head scans. However, these invest

UNLABELLED: In a more clinical setting, abrupt posture change may be used to determine the presence of orthostatic hypotension, a hemodynamic response with relationships to physical function. Certain gait features and physical function performance are also associated with risk of falling in older adults. However, the extent to which posture change is associated with subsequent gait and physical function has received little attention in the literature. This study aims to determine the effects of posture change on spatiotemporal parameters of gait and Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) performance.

In recent years, Romania's stomatology private practice sector has seen substantial growth, with many dentists fully committing to building and expanding their own practices, often funded by their personal income. This study aimed to explore how various postures affect the muscle groups of dentists (380), particularly focusing on identifying positions that may jeopardize their musculoskeletal health. A group of dentists effectively participated in this study (10), adhering to their regular work routines while wearing wearable sensors on their backs to monitor posture and activity. The data gat…

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) presents heterogeneously and is diagnosed when appropriate symptoms are present in conjunction with a heart rate increase of at least 30 beats-per-minute upon standing without orthostatic hypotension. Much of the current understanding of POTS is based on clinical expertise, particularly regarding POTS phenotypes and their potential role in targeting pharmacologic treatment. This study describes the symptom presentation of POTS by phenotypes at a subspecialty POTS clinic. Data was collected prospectively during clinical visits between April 17, 2

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a heterogeneous autonomic disorder. All patients have exaggerated tachycardia upon standing, but the pathophysiology may be diverse. We present a young adult Thai male with a chief complaint of palpitations while in an upright posture since childhood. The patient underwent a modified Ewing test battery which included standing test, deep breathing, and Valsalva maneuver. His heart rate increased more than 30 beats per minute (bpm) during repeated active stand tests (65 to 110 bpm and 77 to 108 bpm), while upright diastolic blood pressure incre…

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a complex autonomic disorder characterized by abnormal tachycardia on standing. This disorder predominantly affects young women, with a peak incidence between ages 20 and 30 years. POTS often is associated with a variety of symptoms, including dizziness, palpitations, fatigue, generalized weakness, anxiety, and exercise intolerance, which can significantly impair patient quality of life. Primary care providers (PCPs) often are the first healthcare professionals to whom patients present. This article provides an overview of POTS, including dia

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) often experience injury-related fear following ankle injuries, a condition known as kinesiophobia. Little research has investigated the impact of kinesiophobia in patients with CAI.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How does kinesiophobia impact the static and dynamic balance of individuals with CAI?
METHODS: Fifty patients with CAI were divided into 2 subgroups based on their responses to the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia: 25 with kinesiophobia (CAI-K) and 25 without kinesiophobia (CAI-N). These groups were compared to 20 control participants. All p

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a complex multisystem disorder characterized by orthostatic intolerance and tachycardia and may be triggered by viral infection. Recent reports indicate that 2%-14% of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survivors develop POTS and 9%-61% experience POTS-like symptoms, such as tachycardia, orthostatic intolerance, fatigue, and cognitive impairment within 6-8 months of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Pathophysiological mechanisms of post-COVID-19 POTS are not well understood. Current hypotheses include au

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Vestibular Migraine (VM), and Meniere Disease (MD) are among the most common episodic vestibulopathies. Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) is a chronic functional vestibular disorder that can arise in patients suffering from one or more of these conditions. We analyzed the role of these vestibular disorders as single or multiple associated comorbidities and as a precipitating condition for PPPD. A total of 376 patients suffering from dizziness with a known history of single or multiple vestibular disorders were preliminarily evaluated.
