OBJECTIVE: Application of SnCl(2)/AmF/NaF containing mouth rinse showed good protection against erosion. The aim of the study was to evaluate if this is due to the amount of KOH-soluble fluoride (KOHsF) formed or its resistance under erosive conditions.
METHODS: One hundred and fifty bovine enamel samples were allocated to five groups (n = 30) and were once eroded in 0.05 mol/l citric acid (5 min). Samples were stored in artificial saliva for 4 days. Samples of two groups (erosive-SnCl(2) + erosive-NaF) were eroded 6 × for 5 min. The remaining samples were stored in aqua dest deionised water.

The effects of salts on the rate constants of inactivation by heat of yeast alcohol dehydrogenase (YADH) at 60.0 degrees C were measured. Alveolar type II cells were isolated from adult rat lungs after tissue dissociation with elastase. The effect of known secretagogues on transmembrane potential was examined in freshly isolated cells (day 0 cells) and in cells after one day of primary culture (day 1 cells). Freshly isolated type II cells were incubated with 3,3'-dipentyloxacarbocyanine (di-O-C5(3)) or 3,3'-dipropylthiadicarbocyanine (di-S-C3(5)), dyes whose intracellular fluorescence intensity is a direct function of the cellular transmembrane potential. Fluorescence was continuously recorded by fluorescence spectrophotometry.

Treatments with various concentrations of K2Cr2O7, CaCrO4 and CrO3 were given to human lymphocytes cultured in presence of BrdUrd for 2 replicative cycles. Sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) were visualized by a combination of fluorescent and Giemsa techniques. In all cases, the higher the concentrations the higher the frequencies of SCEs per metaphase and per chromosome. On a concentration basis, the order of effectiveness in producing SCEs was: CaCrO4 much greater than CrO3 greater than K2Cr2O7.

Most often, only total mercury concentrations in soil samples are determined in environmental studies. However, the determination of extremely toxic methylmercury (MeHg) in addition to the total mercury is critical to understand the biogeochemistry of mercury in the environment. In this study, N2-assisted distillation and acidic KBr/CuSO4 solvent extraction methods were applied to isolate MeHg from wet peat soil samples collected from boreal forest catchments. Determination of MeHg was performed using a purge and trap GC-ICP-MS technique with a species-specific isotope dilution quantification.
