Mainstreaming female genital schistosomiasis to ensure it is not neglected among the neglected tropical diseases.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a neglected manifestation of Schistosoma haematobium infection, affecting an estimated 56 million women in sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by lesions in the genital tract, leading to symptoms like pain, infertility and an increased risk of HIV transmission. Despite its prevalence, FGS remains underdiagnosed and underreported due to limited awareness and diagnostic capabilities. Current knowledge emphasizes the need for integrated approaches combining diagnosis, treatment with praziquantel and education. There are ongoing efforts to integrate FGS

Behavioural mental health interventions delivered in the emergency department for suicide, overdose and psychosis: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe evidence on brief emergency department (ED)-delivered behavioural and care process interventions among patients presenting with suicide attempt or acute ideation, substance overdose or psychosis. DESIGN: We employed a scoping review design and searched multiple data sources, clinical trial registries and references lists through March 2023. We included English-language trials and rigorously designed observational studies. In alignment with scoping review guidelines, we did not assess the quality of included studies or rate the strength of evidence of interv

Uptake of USPSTF recommendation to refer pregnant individuals for therapy or counseling to prevent perinatal depression.

PURPOSE: Perinatal depression is the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, and it is associated with adverse consequences. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that pregnant and postpartum (i.e., perinatal) individuals at risk for depression be referred for therapy or counseling interventions; however, it is unclear to what extent this recommendation has been implemented. METHODS: Pregnant individuals were recruited via advertisements on a pregnancy app and a separate study on sleep. Respondents completed the initial screening questions to deter

Mortality in the United States from self-injury surpasses diabetes: a prevention imperative.

This report uses an enhanced conceptualisation of self-injury mortality (SIM), which comprised registered or known suicides by any method and estimated non-suicide deaths from opioid and other drug self-intoxication. SIM surpassed diabetes as a cause of death in the USA in 2015. The gap expanded in 2016 with respective rates of 29.1 and 24.8 per 100 000 population. Facing similar social and psychologically complex health problems to SIM, the USA has initiated and sustained successful broad-based prevention efforts that have reduced deaths from cardiovascular diseases, smoking-related lung canc

Vector-control synergies, between 'roll back malaria' and the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, in the African region.

The perspectives and opportunities for controlling the mosquito vectors of Wuchereria bancrofti in tropical Africa are summarized and discussed. The countries covered by the World Health Organization's African Region have about one third of the world's burden of lymphatic filariasis (LF) as well as large shares of the planet's malaria and of many other vector-borne diseases. African LF is entirely caused by nocturnally periodic W. bancrofti, filarial nematode that is transmitted in urban East Africa by Culex quinquefasciatus, and in rural areas across tropical Africa by the same anopheline spe

American Cancer Society: the world's wealthiest "nonprofit" institution.

The American Cancer Society is fixated on damage control--diagnosis and treatment--and basic molecular biology, with indifference or even hostility to cancer prevention. This myopic mindset is compounded by interlocking conflicts of interest with the cancer drug, mammography, and other industries. The "nonprofit" status of the Society is in sharp conflict with its high overhead and expenses, excessive reserves of assets and contributions to political parties. All attempts to reform the Society over the past two decades have failed; a national economic boycott of the Society is long overdue.

Control of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in developing countries, Part 2: Vaccination against rubella.

In 1995-96 we conducted a review of rubella immunization strategies. Worldwide, 78 countries (more than one-third) reported a national policy of using rubella vaccine. This was closely related to country economic status. Based on the United Nations country classification, rubella vaccine is used in 92% of industrialized countries, 36% of those with economies-in-transition, and 28% of developing countries. Cases of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) may be prevented as follows: by providing direct protection to women and/or schoolgirls (a selective vaccination strategy); by vaccinating boys and

Family Members Experiences of Being Identified as a Family Caregiver to a Person Living With Dementia.

Globally, family members account for the main source of caregiving for people with dementia in ordinary housing. Providing informal care may have negative health consequences for relatives such as stress, reduced quality of life and depression. According to Swedish legislation, the social services should provide support to those who care for a relative who is elderly, has a long-term illness or a disability. However, it is not clear how family caregivers can be identified to be provided support. Identifying family caregivers is a challenge for social services and the healthcare system, especia

Congenital heart disease and rheumatic heart disease in Africa: recent advances and current priorities.

Africa has one of the highest prevalence of heart diseases in children and young adults, including congenital heart disease (CHD) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). We present here an extensive review of recent data from the African continent highlighting key studies and information regarding progress in CHD and RHD since 2005. Main findings include evidence that the CHD burden is underestimated mainly due to the poor outcome of African children with CHD. The interest in primary prevention for RHD has been recently re-emphasised, and new data are available regarding echocardiographic screening

A multifaceted intervention strategy for reducing substance use in high-risk women.

A multifaceted intervention procedure was used at nine sites to reduce the substance use of high-risk women of child-bearing age. The intervention arm featured an intensive home visit/case management system delivered by support specialists through direct programming or referrals. Six domains (mental health, social support, family functioning, self-efficacy/general well being, alcohol use, and tobacco and other drug use) were the focus of the program. Substance use was significantly correlated (P<0.05) with specific measures of mental health, social support, family functioning, and self-efficac

The impact of a gender transformative school-based suicide prevention workshop in Australia: adolescent boys' perspectives.

Elevated suicide rates among adolescent boys in Australia reflect a critical need to address restrictive masculine norms that hinder help-seeking. Tomorrow Man's 'Breaking the Man Code' workshop-a school-based gender transformative programme-aims to increase authentic self-expression and meaningful dialogue among adolescent boys. Evidence of the impacts of gender transformative programmes is limited. Within a cluster randomized trial, 183 boys (Years 10 upwards) from 11 Australian schools completed open-ended survey questions about their experiences of the 'Breaking the Man Code' workshop and
