Direct powder extrusion 3D printing of a polyhydroxybutyrate-based dual-release drug delivery device for dental therapy.

This study investigates the processability of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in different physical forms (i.e., powder, pellets, and granules) using direct powder extrusion (DPE) 3D printing (3DP), a technique that enables the direct use of raw materials without prior filament fabrication. The raw materials were thoroughly characterized with respect to their thermal properties to evaluate their suitability for additive manufacturing application. Two DPE 3D printers employing distinct extrusion-driven mechanisms were used to enable a comparative evaluation under identical material conditions. Follow

Failure modes in semi-solid extrusion 3D printing for pharmaceuticals: from ink preparation to post-printing.

Semi-solid extrusion (SSE) 3D printing, a type of syringe-based direct-ink writing, is increasingly being investigated for pharmaceutical dosage forms because of the possibility of low-temperature processing, multi-material architectures, and patient-specific designs. However, beyond feasibility, translation is limited by high process sensitivity; small changes in ink history, extrusion dynamics, deposition kinematics, and post-print solidification can cause defects that propagate to critical quality attributes (CQAs) such as mass and content uniformity (CU), mechanical integrity, disintegrati

Application of 3D printing technology in the development of future foods derived from edible fungi: From the perspective of creating dysphagia diets based on multidimensional quality differences of various shiitake mushrooms.

3D printing can create visually appealing, personalized and nutritious foods, making it an ideal pathway for the development of dysphagia-friendly diets. Shiitake mushroom, characterized by its high protein and low fat, is particularly suitable for consumption by the elderly and can be used as a raw material for the development of 3D-printed dysphagia diet. However, there are significant quality differences between varieties, especially in nutrition, rheology and texture profile analysis, which decides deficiency of its development in the background of 3D printing. Therefore, this study tried

StereoPylot: An Open-Source Raspberry Pi-Based Stereotaxic Apparatus Controller with 3D Printed Components for Fully Motorized Control, Digital Display, and Customizable Features.

Stereotaxic surgery is a powerful technique used to deliver drugs, viral vectors, and/or probes into discrete regions of the brain. Over the past decade, the emphasis on performing complex surgeries for neural circuit manipulations or studying multiple brain regions in the same animal has increased. While analog stereotaxic instruments are generally suitable for these types of experiments, the surgeon must accurately read vernier scales for each brain region of interest, which is both time-consuming and prone to user error. Although vendors now offer digital stereotaxic instruments that overco

Effects of Hydrogel-to-Oleogel Ratio and Potato Protein Isolate Concentration on the 3D Printing and Post-Heating Properties of Food-Grade Bigels.

This study investigated the effects of the hydrogel-to-oleogel ratio and potato protein isolate (PPI) concentration on the printing and post-heating properties of food-grade bigels. Bigels with hydrogel-to-oleogel ratios of 10:0, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, and 0:10 were evaluated for physical stability, rheological behavior, structural recovery, and 3D printing performance. Among the biphasic formulations, H7O3 exhibited the highest liquid-binding capacity (99.43%) and structural recovery ratio (88.7%) and produced lateral dimensions closest to those of the CAD model. H7O3 was therefore selected for PPI i

Digitally-driven optimization of intraoral water jet parameters for plaque removal: a personalized 3D-guided orthogonal study.

BACKGROUND: Effective plaque biofilm control is essential for preventing caries and periodontal diseases. Although oral irrigation devices (water flossers) are widely used as an adjunct to toothbrushing, the specific influence of their core engineering parameters-nozzle diameter, working distance, and water pressure-on plaque removal efficacy remains poorly characterized in vivo, leaving both clinical recommendations and device design without robust evidence. This study aimed to systematically optimize these parameters using a digitally guided orthogonal experimental design. METHODS: A three-

"Bioprinting of Hair: How Far We Proceeded and What Needs to be Done".

Alopecia is a common dermatologic disorder with psychological and quality-of-life impact. Current options such as PRP, topical agents, microneedling or dermarollers, drugs, and transplantation, often provide only partial or short-term benefit and depend on existing follicles. 3D bioprinting is transforming regenerative trichology by positioning cells and "bioinks" to recreate hair-bearing skin. Advances include biomimetic dermal papilla spheroids, follicle organoids in engineered dermis, and bioprinted skin equivalents with nascent HF-like structures. Translation is limited by vascular and ner

Engineering heterogeneous tissues and organs via multi-material bioprinting: Advances, challenges, and opportunities.

Native tissues and organs exhibit intrinsic heterogeneity in their structural, compositional, and functional properties, which poses significant challenges towards the development of effective functional substitutes. Multi-material three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a promising strategy to address these challenges by enabling enhanced spatial control over the deposition of biomaterials, signaling factors, and diverse cell types. This capability facilitates the fabrication of heterogeneous tissue constructs that aim to approach the complexity of native tissues, although achieving

3D-printed radiopaque episcleral plaques with radioactive collimating cavities for enhanced dose delivery in brachytherapy.

PURPOSE: Episcleral plaque brachytherapy (EPBT) is a well-established treatment. However, the lateral dose to healthy tissues, such as the sclera, retina, and optic nerve is often problematic and results in side effects. This study proposes an innovative approach based on the 3D-printing of radiopaque polymer plaques featuring cylindrical radioactive cavities (CRC) with a potential collimating effect on radiation delivery to tumors. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A CAD model based on the COMS protocol was created and 3D-printed using radiopaque PEEK polymer. Cylindrical cavities (1 mm depth/diameter)

Preliminary Assessment of the Possible Environmental Risks of Photopolymerizing Resin Particles Produced by Finishing Stereolithography 3D-Printed Objects, Employing Toxicity Test on Tropical House Crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus).

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a rapidly growing field in industry. AM technologies include sintering, melting, and stereolithography. With steadily rising utilization, evaluating the environmental impact of AM materials has become essential, as these materials may act as emerging pollutants. Photopolymerizing resins (PRs) used in stereolithography can enter terrestrial ecosystems in polymerized and unpolymerized forms due to improper disposal. Insects are likely to be among the first organisms exposed to these contaminants in land ecosystems. This study evaluates t

Rapid and Low-Cost Mesh Shaping Technique for Orbital Fracture Reconstruction - A Technical Note.

Orbital fractures are surgically demanding due to their complex anatomy and esthetic implications. This technical innovation describes a low-cost approach using open-source software (three-dimensional Slicer and Meshmixer) to design and print templates for preoperative molding of titanium meshes in orbital reconstruction. By segmenting the defect and printing only the affected orbital region, this technique reduces time, cost, and material usage while improving fit and efficiency.

[Patient-specific 3D-printed implants and templates for elbow and forearm].

The process of 3D printing has found its way into orthopedics and trauma surgery, particularly for complex interventions on the elbow and forearm. By producing patient-specific implants and surgical templates misalignments, fractures and deformities can be precisely corrected. It could be shown that this technology increases the surgical accuracy, shortens recovery times and reduces postoperative complications. Compared to conventional implants 3D-printed implants provide the advantage of individual adaptation to the anatomical situation of the patient. This is particularly relevant in complex

Influence of joint deformation on the auxetic behaviour of 3D printed polypropylene structures.

Auxetic structures studied in the literature are often based on relatively stiff, metallic materials and theories regarding their response to mechanical loading cannot be translated directly to polymeric materials. As "soft" auxetics increase in popularity for applications in tissue engineering further investigation into the joint behaviour and effect on their Poisson's ratio is required. 3D printed polypropylene auxetic mesh structures were produced to compare to the requirements for biological cell-stretching devices while investigating the deformation mechanics. The behaviour of the meshes
