The role of HLA antibodies in neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia is controversial. We prospectively studied the sera of obstetric patients at delivery for HLA antibodies and correlated their presence with umbilical cord blood platelet counts. Three hundred cases of complicated diverticular disease were entered into a national audit organised by the Surgical Research Society from 30 hospitals between 1985 and 1988. 250 patients aged 65 and more were operated in a general surgical unit and were studied prospectively on admission. 16 parameters have been studied, trying to determine the factors which might induce a risk of post-operative complications. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of marathon training on hormonal and semen profiles in male athletes.

1,000 colonoscopies were registered in a specially designed database. The database software secured complete registrations. Data of 5000 consecutive patients with biliary lithiasis operated on between 1970 and 1990 were recorded prospectively. There were 476 emergency procedures and 125 reoperations. Concomitant abdominal operations were performed in 504 patients. The mean(s.d.) age was 54.7(14.2) years. Retrospective surveys of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage suggest that minor episodes with sudden headache (warning leaks) may precede rupture of an aneurysm, and that early recognition and surgery might lead to improved outcome. We made a long term prospective study of 66 patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). Prevalence was 10.2% among 672 patients with epilepsies. Sex distribution was equal. Sixty-three were not diagnosed on referral; JME was not initially recognized in the epilepsy clinic in 22.
