Evoked potential (EP) correlates of several psychiatric disorders were investigated by applying a comprehensive EP procedure to 102 psychiatric patients and 28 nonpatients. EPs to left and right median nerve shocks, visual pattern flashes, and auditory clicks were recorded from one EOG and 14 monopolar scalp derivations. Nine age- and sex-matched groups were compared to yield the following main results: (i) EPs of overtly psychotic patients (schizophrenics, depressives, manics) differed markedly from normal, while those of patients without overt psychosis (neurotics, personality disorders, lat

Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) refer to sub-threshold hallucinations and delusions observed in both clinical samples and the general population. Psychotic-like experiences have far-reaching implications for an individual's coping strategies and daily functioning. They are associated with both psychotic and non-psychotic disorders. This article presents a comprehensive review of the current literature on PLEs, incorporating a detailed exploration of the definition, prevalence, risk factors, functional impairments, and comorbid psychiatric disorders. Medline/PubMed and Embase were searched to…

Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are widely used as therapeutic agents, for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. However, the discovery that CCBs bind to various regions of the brain suggest that they might also offer some beneficial effects in the treatment of neuropsychiatry disorders. This study was carried out to evaluate the anti-psychotic and sedative effects of two notable calcium channel blockers, verapamil and nifedipine in mice. The anti-psychotic effects of the CCBs were studied in the animal model of amphetamine-induced stereotyped behavioral disorders. The sedative effect was

BACKGROUND: To prevent or delay the onset of psychotic disorders or ameliorate their course, prodromal research has strived to identify and treat individuals at risk of developing psychosis. While this approach is laudable, it is, however, not entirely unproblematic from clinical and conceptual perspectives. For example, it remains unclear how we are to understand the development from a nonpsychotic, distressing condition such as schizotypal disorder to a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia? The current terminology on the subject implies either a nonlinear jump ("conversion") or a more li…

This is a cross-sectional study of 227 cocaine dependent individuals in six different therapeutic communities (TCs) within a single treatment network in Andalusia (Spain). The primary aim of the study is to examine the prevalence of lifetime psychiatric comorbidity in this sample using the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders (PRISM). Diagnoses were assessed 15-20 days after admission. The data indicate that more than 65% of the sample experienced a lifetime co-occurring psychiatric comorbidity. Substance-induced mood (21.6%) and psychotic (11.5%) disorders were mo

Patients with treatment-resistant unipolar depression (TRD) are treated with antidepressant combinations (ADs) or with second-generation antipsychotics plus AD (SGA+AD) augmentation; however, the clinical characteristics, the factors associated independently with response to SGA+AD, and the outcome trajectories have not yet been characterized. We performed a naturalistic study on the latest stable trial (medication unchanged for about 3 months) in 86 TRD patients with resistance to at least two ADs trials, who received ADs (n=36) or SGA+AD (n=50) treatments. Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the most frequently occurring dementia in the presenile population. Despite epidemiologic data showing that patients with FTD may have experienced previous psychiatric disorders and that patients with psychotic disorders may develop dementia more often than expected in the nonaffected population, the overlap between these two conditions has been underestimated. Nevertheless, the identification in recent years of several genetic causes of FTD associated with heterogeneous and atypical presentations, including pure psychiatric symptoms, has shifted scientific int…

BACKGROUND: Substance use and psychiatric illness, particularly psychotic disorders, contribute to violence in emergency healthcare settings. However, there is limited research regarding the relationship between specific substances, psychotic symptoms and violent behaviour in such settings. We investigated the interaction between recent cannabinoid and stimulant use, and acute psychotic symptoms, in relation to violent behaviour in a British emergency healthcare setting.
METHODS: We used electronic medical records from detentions of 1089 individuals under Section 136 of the UK Mental Health A…

This study examined the relation between a history of maltreatment and the presence of psychotic symptoms in a community sample of adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder. One hundred and twenty-nine depressed adolescents and young adults (M = 16.02 years, 77% female, 92% White) were recruited through community advertisement and clinician referral. Clinical diagnoses and psychotic symptoms (i.e., hallucinations and delusions) were assessed using a structured diagnostic interview. Childhood maltreatment was assessed using a contextual interview and standardized rating system

INTRODUCTION: Nonclinical psychotic symptoms (for example, low intensity or low frequency psychotic symptoms such as ideas of reference or single word auditory hallucinations) are common in adolescents and may be associated with an increased risk of developing a psychotic disorder in adulthood. Those at high risk of developing a psychotic disorder appear to perform poorly on facial emotion recognition tasks but the relationship between facial emotion recognition and nonclinical "psychosis like symptoms" (PLIKS) in children is unclear. We aimed to examine the association between childhood facia

OBJECTIVE: Early assessment can guide accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment-planning for patients with major mental illnesses. Longitudinal studies in psychotic depression from onset are rare, encouraging the present study.
METHOD: We followed 56 DSM-IV MDD patients with psychotic features prospectively and systematically to assess course and predictors of operationally-defined syndromal remission, syndromal recovery, symptomatic remission, functional recovery, and new episodes, and to evaluate diagnostic stability.
RESULTS: Among 49/56 cases followed for ≥2 years, 59% retained the in

Mothers in the puerperium are vulnerable to a wide spectrum of postpartum psychiatric disorders. One of the central psychological processes of the puerperium is the development of an emotional relationship with the baby. The bond to the infant as well as the interaction with the baby are two aspects of the mother-infant relationship that can be disturbed by mothers with postpartum psychiatric disorders. Dysfunctional maternal cognitions may also influence the development of an emotional bonding and the establishment of a positive interaction with the child. The aim of this study is to investig

BACKGROUND: In the last 10 years, psychological approaches based on mindfulness techniques have been proposed for the management of psychotic experiences.
METHOD: In this brief review we summarized, to our knowledge for the first time, published studies on mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) applied to the early phase of major psychoses (affective and non-affective).
RESULTS: Despite the great variability in terms of MBIs protocols, available studies on young people at risk to develop or with a first episode of psychosis suggest MBIs as a feasible, well-tolerated and effective approach in

Capgras syndrome, a delusional misidentification syndrome characterized by the belief that a close relative or friend has been replaced by an identical imposter, is a rare phenomenon often associated with psychotic disorders. Here, we present a case of a male in his early 80s with Lewy body dementia (LBD) who developed Capgras syndrome. Despite initial challenges in management, including thought blocking and word-finding difficulty, the patient experienced complete resolution of symptoms following treatment with rivastigmine, a cholinesterase inhibitor, commonly used in major neurocognitive di…
