Establishing remediation levels in response to a radiological dispersal event (or "dirty bomb").

The detonation of a radiological dispersal device (RDD) could produce significant social and economic damage, the extent of which would depend largely on how quickly and effectively cleanup levels were established and on public acceptance of those levels. This paper shows that current radiological cleanup laws and regulations, models for converting dose or risk goals to cleanup concentrations, and existing site-specific criteria were not designed specifically for RDD cleanups but, absent changes, would apply by default. The goals and approaches of these legal and methodological structures ofte

Real-time modelling used for outbreak management during a cholera epidemic, Haiti, 2010-2011.

The emergence of epidemic cholera in post-earthquake Haiti portended a public health disaster of uncertain magnitude. In order to coordinate relief efforts in an environment with limited healthcare infrastructure and stretched resources, timely and realistic projections of the extent of the cholera outbreak were crucial. Projections were shared with Government and partner organizations beginning 5 days after the first reported case and were updated using progressively more advanced methods as more surveillance data became available. The first projection estimated that 105 000 cholera cases wou

A socio-ecological approach to the determinants of animal health management: A scoping review.

With approximately 60% of human infectious diseases originating from zoonotic sources, an integrated approach to animal health management is critical. Significant barriers persist in optimizing disease control strategies, particularly regarding diagnostics, surveillance, biosecurity, and vaccination systems. Beyond technical and health-related aspects, socio-economic factors substantially influence both adoption and efficacy of intervention measures. While these determinants have been increasingly explored through integration of social sciences, such as economics, sociology, political science,

HBM4EU feasibility studies: Lessons learned in combining health and human biomonitoring studies.

BACKGROUND: The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) is a joint program evaluating humans' exposure to several environmental substances and their potential health effects. One of the main objectives of HBM4EU is to make use of human biomonitoring (HBM) to assess human exposure to chemicals in Europe to better understand the associated health impacts and to improve chemical risk assessment. In parallel to HBM studies, health examination surveys (HESs), nutrition/dietary surveys, and disease specific health surveys are conducted in many European countries. In HESs, information collec

Influence of secondary water supply systems on microbial community structure and opportunistic pathogen gene markers.

Secondary water supply systems (SWSSs) refer to the in-building infrastructures (e.g., water storage tanks) used to supply water pressure beyond the main distribution systems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of SWSSs on microbial community structure and the occurrence of opportunistic pathogens, the latter of which are an emerging public health concern. Higher numbers of bacterial 16S rRNA genes, Legionella and mycobacterial gene markers were found in public building taps served by SWSSs relative to the mains, regardless of the flushing practice (P < 0.05). In reside

Burden, access, and disparities in kidney disease.

Kidney disease is a global public health problem, affecting over 750 million persons worldwide. The burden of kidney disease varies substantially across the world, as does its detection and treatment. In many settings, rates of kidney disease and the provision of its care are defined by socio-economic, cultural, and political factors leading to significant disparities. World Kidney Day 2019 offers an opportunity to raise awareness of kidney disease and highlight disparities in its burden and current state of global capacity for prevention and management. Here, we highlight that many countries

From Clinic to Community: A Public Health Framework for Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease Prevention in India.

BACKGROUND: India is witnessing a rapid rise in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), driven by the country's expanding population with obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and other metabolic comorbidities. Despite this growing burden, structured liver disease screening is absent from routine noncommunicable disease (NCD) services at the primary care level. PROBLEM: A majority of MASLD diagnoses in India occur only after progression to advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, even among individuals regularly engaged with healthcare systems for diabetes or hypertension. Primary

Stakeholder Recommendations on Shaping Human Biospecimen Banking Governance in Pakistan.

Standardized biospecimen banking is foundational for biomedical research and eventually underpins population health outcomes. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) biobanking remains fragmented and weakly governed, limiting both scientific value and public trust in the ensuing research. This commentary presents insights from a stakeholder dialogue at a national pathology conference in Pakistan. The discourse identified drivers of human biospecimen banking fragmentation and governance gaps in the country, while mapping out contextually appropriate harmonization opportunities. Partici

Knowledge, economic, and WASH challenges affecting menstrual health and hygiene among nursing students in Bangladesh using a mixed-methods approach.

Menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) remain stigmatized and neglected in low- and middle-income countries such as Bangladesh due to cultural taboos, poor infrastructure, and limited education. This study examines how knowledge, socioeconomic background, and WASH facilities are associated with key MHH indicators. A convergent mixed-methods design was applied between December 2024 and January 2025, combining a survey of 370 students from seven public nursing institutions with six focus group discussions involving 21 female and 21 male students for gendered understanding. Quantitative data were ana

Analyzing pedestrian fatalities in the United States: A comparative study of pedestrian and census tract level factors across pre-, during, and late-pandemic periods.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing number of pedestrian fatalities has emerged as a significant public health concern, a situation that has been exacerbated by the disruptions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. While existing literature provides insights into general trends and factors affecting pedestrian safety, a gap remains in understanding how these dynamics shifted during the pandemic and late-pandemic periods. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the factors that have differential impacts on pedestrian fatalities across three periods: pre-pandemic (2018-2019), pandemic

Mycetoma managment: Therapeutic challenges and the role of pharmacovigilance.

Mycetoma presents numerous therapeutic challenges, particularly due to delays in diagnosis, the toxic nature of existing antifungals and antibiotics treatments, and the lack of robust clinical evidence to guide care. This neglected tropical disease, which primarily affects low-resource regions, is further complicated by socio-economic barriers that limit access to healthcare and treatment. These challenges underscore the urgent need for better treatment options, more comprehensive research, and strengthened pharmacovigilance systems to monitor treatment safety and efficacy. Use of Twitter data to improve Zika virus surveillance in the United States during the 2016 epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging mosquito-borne arbovirus that can produce serious public health consequences. In 2016, ZIKV caused an epidemic in many countries around the world, including the United States. ZIKV surveillance and vector control is essential to combating future epidemics. However, challenges relating to the timely publication of case reports significantly limit the effectiveness of current surveillance methods. In many countries with poor infrastructure, established systems for case reporting often do not exist. Previous studies investigating the H1N1 pandemic, gen
