Dose-Response Modeling of the Visual Pathway Tolerance to Single-Fraction and Hypofractionated Stereotactic Radiosurgery.

Patients with tumors adjacent to the optic nerves and chiasm are frequently not candidates for single-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) due to concern for radiation-induced optic neuropathy. However, these patients have been successfully treated with hypofractionated SRS over 2-5 days, though dose constraints have not yet been well defined. We reviewed the literature on optic tolerance to radiation and constructed a dose-response model for visual pathway tolerance to SRS delivered in 1-5 fractions. We analyzed optic nerve and chiasm dose-volume histogram (DVH) data from perioptic tumors

Sclerosing postirradiation panniculitis.

Sclerosing postirradiation panniculitis is an unusual variant of panniculitis that appears as a complication of megavoltage radiotherapy. Most patient are women with a history of breast cancer who develop nodular lesions on the anterior chest skin several months after receiving megavoltage therapy for breast carcinoma. Sclerosing postirradiation panniculitis is an unusual cutaneous complication of megavoltage radiotherapy that should be distinguished from subcutaneous metastatic disease, cellulitis, and connective tissue diseases involving the subcutaneous fat. The differential diagnosis can b

Environmental health physics: 50 years of progress.

Environmental health physics is an interdisciplinary field, involving study of the release, transport, and fate of radioactive material in the environment. Further, it addresses the interaction of humans with radioactive materials within the ambient (outdoor) environment and with the environments associated with modern technology and lifestyles. It also involves both naturally occurring and artificially produced radionuclides with the former generally being by far the highest source of exposure. In fact, doses from naturally occurring radionuclides are increasingly being used as a benchmark fo

[In-hospitaltraumamanagement - radiation emergency and multiple trauma - principals of treatment in the emergency room].

Exposure to ionizing radiation combined with multiple trauma is a very rare but severe event. There are some important basic principles for the early inpatient management. An externally exposed patient poses no risk to the treatment team. Injuries require treatment in order of priority as known for example by ATLS(®). Against external contamination, the treatment team is adequately protected by wearing protective clothing and gloves in conformity with universal medical precautions. Treatment of life threatening injuries takes priority over decontamination. Specialized treatment centres should

Radiation as a nervous system toxin.

Neurotoxicity from radiation can range widely and produce effects that may include (1) small absolute increases in cancer risks, (2) subtle effects on higher level functioning in some individuals, (3) severe cognitive impairment in some individuals, (4) severe focal injury tat may include necrosis or irreversible loss of function, and (5) overwhelming and rapidly fatal diffuse injury associated with high-dose, whole-body exposures. An understanding of the implications of nervous system exposure to radiation can guide efforts in radiation protection and aid in the optimization of the medical us

Metrnl in mitigating radiation enteritis via label-retaining cells protection by modulating the c-KIT-WNT pathway.

Currently, there exists no definitive standardized therapy for radiation enteritis. This study unveils Metrnl as a pivotal regulator of intestinal radioprotection through multi-dimensional single-cell profiling and mechanistic dissection. We first demonstrate that radiation dynamically reprograms Metrnl expression in a time-dependent manner, revealing its role as a radiation-responsive mediator. Crucially, Metrnl confers potent protection against radiation-induced intestinal injury through double mechanisms; Metrnl safeguards label-retaining cells (LRCs) rather than conventional Lgr5+ intestin

GSDME knockout alleviates hematopoietic stem cell irradiation injury and aggravates myeloid-biased differentiation.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow (BM) suppression is the most prevalent dose-limiting side effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) results in acute BM suppression and long-term BM injury. Gasdermin E (GSDME) is crucial for mediating apoptosis and pyroptosis during chemotherapy. However, its role in radiation-induced hematopoietic injury is not well established. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of GSDME on radiation-induced hematopoietic injury. METHODS: We established hematopoietic radiation injury models in C57BL/6 mice and Gsdme-/- mice. The peripheral

[Occupational injuries of the eye caused by optical irradiation].

On the basis of the increasing number of everyday exposures to numerous artificial sources of optical radiation (ultraviolet radiation, visible light, infrared radiation and laser), the probability of occupational and other ocular damages is increasing. The risk of vision damage due to sunlight radiation also exists during the staring at the sun with unprotected eyes especially in the time of eclipse, and the long stay in the bright light. In addition to ultraviolet radiation and short wavelengths of visible spectrum ("blue light") the photochemical (actinic) damage mechanism of the retina can

Ophiopogon japonicus inhibits radiation-induced pulmonary inflammation in mice.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced lung injury, including the acute pulmonary inflammation and chronic pulmonary fibrosis remains the major complication of thoracic radiotherapy. METHODS: In this study, we assessed the effects of Ophiopogon japonicus (O. japonicas) in inhibiting the radiation-induced pulmonary inflammation through an acute lung injury mouse model using C57BL/6 mice that received 18 Gy irradiation to the thoracic region. Starting at 4 days before radiation, mice were treated with O. japonicus or dexamethasone combined with cephalexin or vehicle daily for 14 days. RESULTS: Exposure

Lung Injury after Precision Radiotherapy: Temporal Evolution, Potential Pitfalls, and Complications.

High-precision radiation therapy (HPRT) techniques, including stereotactic body radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and proton therapy, have significantly improved tumor targeting in lung cancer while minimizing damage to surrounding lung tissue. Despite these advances, radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) remains a common complication, manifesting as acute pneumonitis and chronic fibrosis. Compared with conventional radiation therapy, HPRT is associated with a delayed onset and more localized manifestations of RILI. Pneumonitis typically occurs around 3 months following

Role of inflammation in a rat model of radiation retinopathy.

Radiation retinopathy (RR) is a major side effect of ocular tumor treatment by plaque brachytherapy or proton beam therapy. RR manifests as delayed and progressive microvasculopathy, ischemia and macular edema, ultimately leading to vision loss, neovascular glaucoma, and, in extreme cases, secondary enucleation. Intravitreal anti-VEGF agents, steroids and laser photocoagulation have limited effects on RR. The role of retinal inflammation and its contribution to the microvascular damage occurring in RR remain incompletely understood. To explore cellular and vascular events after irradiation, we

Utilization of developmental basic science principles in the evaluation of reproductive risks from pre- and postconception environmental radiation exposures.

The subject of the reproductive toxicity of various forms of radiation can be anxiety provoking to the public on two accounts, since reproductive failure engenders an unusual level of guilt and anger in the affected families, and radiation effects are misunderstood and feared by the public. Reproductive problems include an array of genetic and acquired diseases affecting parents and their offspring. Many of these problems are associated with the risk of being induced by preconception and/or postconception exposures to environmental agents. For the various forms of radiation, namely, ionizing r

[Risk from prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation].

Exposure to ionizing radiation during pregnancy always is a worrisome event. Knowledge of teratogenic and carcinogenic mechanisms based on reliable scientific data (ICRP 84) allows appropriate management of patients following exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiation exposure in the setting of diagnostic imaging studies is not associated with an increased risk of fetal malformation; however, the risk of childhood malignancy is minimally increased. This information must be provided to parents so they may reach an informed decision with regards to the outcome of the pregnancy. The analysis of th

Fundamental evaluation of a novel upright shield to protect medical personnel from scattered radiation during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography using a C-arm system.

Medical personnel performing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are at a high risk of developing radiation-induced injuries, such as cataracts, due to scattered radiation, making the use of appropriate radiation protection equipment essential. We developed two types of upright shields attached to a C-arm system (under-couch tube position): one for the operator and the other for the anesthesiologist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of these upright shields. We conducted a phantom study in typical ERCP settings and compared the scattered radiati
