Long-term patient-reported outcomes in a randomized controlled trial of Mepitel Film versus standard of care for the prevention of acute breast radiation dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to evaluate the long-term skin-related patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing Mepitel Film (MF) to standard of care (SOC) for the prevention of acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) in breast cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy (RT). METHODS: Patients were contacted via telephone at 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months post-RT to complete the Skin Symptom Assessment (SSA) and Radiation-induced Skin Reaction Assessment Scale (RISRAS). SSA and RISRAS scores at follow-up visits were compared to baseline using a generalize

Radiation recall dermatitis induced by abemaciclib with successful rechallenge: a case series and literature review.

PURPOSE: To raise awareness of radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) in the context of radiotherapy combined with abemaciclib, and to explore its potential mechanisms, characteristics, and treatment options. METHODS: We conducted a case series study reporting the first instances of RRD induced by abemaciclib in two women with locally advanced luminal breast cancer. Both patients experienced skin reactions in previously irradiated areas following abemaciclib administration. Additionally, a comprehensive literature review was performed to analyze the potential mechanisms of RRD, characteristics of

Cetuximab Plus Concurrent Radiotherapy in Patients With Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Several reports have evaluated the efficacy and safety of concurrent radiotherapy with cetuximab (BRT) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Combination therapy with cetuximab can be a treatment option for NPC. Although clinical data regarding the efficacy and safety of BRT without induction chemotherapy (ICT) or adjuvant chemotherapy is essential for the development of new therapeutic strategies, such data are rarely reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively investigated a series of patients with NPC treated in our institution to evaluate the efficacy and

Radiation induced skin reactions during and following radiotherapy: A systematic review of interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation induced skin reactions (RISR) are a common adverse effect of radiotherapy that can impact on patient quality of life. The aim of this systematic review was to identify new research evidence on interventions for RISR to guide health practitioners on best practice skin care for people receiving radiotherapy. METHODS: A narrative systematic review was adopted including published research since 2014. The MESH search terms used in the 2014 College of Radiographers skin care systematic review were supplemented with terms identified through a pearl growing search technique.

Recurrent radiation recall dermatitis triggered by radiological procedures in a patient with breast cancer.

Radiation recall dermatitis is an acute inflammatory reaction that occurs on previously irradiated skin by usage of chemotherapeutic agents and other triggering drugs. The recall reaction is usually associated with drugs but may also occur following ultraviolet radiation. We report a patient with radiation recall dermatitis, triggered after imaging procedures that involved radiation.

[Laser and light therapy for treatment of radiation dermatitis].

Radiation dermatitis (RD), an inflammatory skin disease that can be an unwanted side effect of medical radiation therapy (RT), most commonly occurs in patients undergoing cancer of the ENT, anal, and vulvar regions. The side effects on the skin and mucous membranes occur within a few weeks after the initiation of RT; however, late side effects can develop months to years after the RT. Therapeutically, various treatment approaches are considered such as pentoxifylline, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, laser therapy, and PBMT. In order to limit the reduced quality of life of patients with RT-induced f

APPLICATION OF REFLECTANCE CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY FOR EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF RADIATION-INDUCED ACUTE DERMATITIS IN RADIOSENSITIVE PATIENT: CASE STUDY.

According to the guidelines on cancer treatment up to 52% of newly diagnosed cancer patients should be treated with external beam radiotherapy. Ionizing radiation (IR)-induced skin injury (radiation dermatitis) occurs in up to 95% of radiotherapy patients and can manifest from mild erythema till necrosis and ulceration. Individual radiosensitivity was proposed to be an important factor for the development of adverse reactions to IR. Therefore, assessment of radiosensitivity could be useful in predicting and dealing with radiation injuries caused by both radiotherapy and accidental overexposure

Radiation-associated angiosarcoma in the setting of breast cancer mimicking radiation dermatitis: A diagnostic pitfall.

BACKGROUND: We have encountered cases of post-radiation angiosarcoma (PRAS) histologically mimicking radiation dermatitis. METHODS: Cases of PRAS from institutional/consultation archives from 2006 to 2016 were reviewed. For inclusion, tumors had to have inapparent/subtle tumor at low magnification and scattered individual tumor cells resembling radiation fibroblasts. Prior ancillary studies were reviewed, with additional immunostains performed as needed. RESULTS: 10 cases met criteria. All occurred in women treated for breast cancer (mean age 71 years). All had similar findings: in particula

Outdoor Exposure to Solar Ultraviolet Radiation and Legislation in Brazil.

The total ozone column of 265 ± 11 Dobson Units in the tropical-equatorial zones and 283 ± 16 Dobson Units in the subtropics of Brazil are among the lowest on Earth, and as a result, the prevalence of skin cancer due to solar ultraviolet radiation is among the highest. Daily erythemal doses in Brazil can be over 7,500 J m. Erythemal dose rates on cloudless days of winter and summer are typically about 0.147 W m and 0.332 W m, respectively. However, radiation enhancement events yielded by clouds have been reported with erythemal dose rates of 0.486 W m. Daily doses of the diffuse component of e

Effects of Boron-Based Gel on Radiation-Induced Dermatitis in Breast Cancer: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

AIM: This study is aimed to evaluate the effects of boron on radiation-induced skin reactions (RISR) in breast cancer patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After 47 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma underwent radiotherapy, 23 (49%) received a boron-based gel, and 24 (51%) received placebo. Assessments were performed according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) skin scale and a Five-Point Horizontal Scale (FPHS). RESULTS: At the end of the fifth week of radiotherapy, the RTOG scores in the boron group were significantly lower than those in the placebo group (p = .024). The FPHS sc

Increased skin and mucosal toxicity in the combination of vemurafenib with radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Palliative radiotherapy is often required for patients with metastatic malignant melanoma in the case of bone or brain metastases. Since BRAF inhibitor therapy is highly efficient in V600-mutated melanomas, there is hesitation to stop it during radiotherapy. Consequently, radiotherapy under simultaneous vemurafenib treatment is frequently needed. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a patient receiving palliative radiotherapy of spinal bone metastases before and during vemurafenib therapy. The skin reactions were quantitatively scored using computer-assisted digital image evaluation

Radiation recall reaction with docetaxel administration after accelerated partial breast irradiation with electronic brachytherapy.

PURPOSE: Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) offers several advantages over whole breast irradiation. Electronic brachytherapy may further reduce barriers to breast conserving therapy by making APBI more available. However, its toxicity profile is not well characterized. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A 60-year-old woman was treated with APBI using Axxent (Xoft, Sunnyvale, CA) electronic brachytherapy. One month after APBI, a cycle of docetaxel and cyclophosphamide was given. Within 3 weeks, the patient developed an ulcerative radiation recall reaction in the skin overlying the lumpectomy c

Symptom control issues and supportive care of patients with head and neck cancers.

Combined-modality treatment of head and neck cancers, though linked to improved outcomes over earlier treatment methods, can be associated with acute and late adverse effects. These toxicities may lead to significant morbidity, increased mortality, and decreased quality of life. It is necessary to provide patients with adequate supportive-care measures in order to lessen suffering while maintaining the ability to deliver necessary doses of anticancer agents. The current review describes the pathology, assessment, and treatment options for cases of mucositis, impaired swallowing, nutritional an

Corneal perforation secondary to UV radiation from a tanning lamp.

PURPOSE: To report the case of a patient with keratoconus who developed a corneal perforation secondary to UV radiation from a tanning lamp. We believe this to be the first case of a corneal perforation secondary to UV radiation. METHODS: The presentation and management of the patient and the pathophysiology of UV keratitis are discussed. RESULTS: Our patient developed a full-thickness corneal perforation after 30 minutes of tanning lamp exposure without eye protection. The cornea was temporized with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive until penetrating keratoplasty could be performed. CONCLUSION
