AI bone lesion classifier with sensitivity-driven optimization for radiographs.

AIM: This study aims to develop a deep learning classifier for detecting primary bone lesions on radiographs, emphasizing high sensitivity while maintaining practical clinical usability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Radiographs of the upper and lower extremities were reviewed by board-certified radiologists and categorized into two groups: "Normal" (without bone lesions) and "Abnormal" (with bone lesions). The final dataset comprised 1,177 radiographs from 310 patients, including 547 abnormal and 630 normal cases. The MobileNetV2 architecture was trained with a sensitivity-driven approach designed t

AI for interpreting screening mammograms: implications for missed cancer in double reading practices and challenging-to-locate lesions.

Although the value of adding AI as a surrogate second reader in various scenarios has been investigated, it is unknown whether implementing an AI tool within double reading practice would capture additional subtle cancers missed by both radiologists who independently assessed the mammograms. This paper assesses the effectiveness of two state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) models in detecting retrospectively-identified missed cancers within a screening program employing double reading practices. The study also explores the agreement between AI and radiologists in locating the lesions,

Can artificial intelligence replace ultrasound as a complementary tool to mammogram for the diagnosis of the breast cancer?

OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the performance of mammogram with regard to the classification of the detected breast lesions in correlation to ultrasound-aided mammograms. METHODS: Ethics committee approval was obtained in this prospective analysis. The study included 2000 mammograms. The mammograms were interpreted by the radiologists and breast ultrasound was performed for all cases. The Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) score was applied regarding the combined evaluation of the mammogram and the ultrasound modalities. Each breast side was

New convolutional neural network model for screening and diagnosis of mammograms.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and poses a great threat to women's life and health. Mammography is an effective method for the diagnosis of breast cancer, but the results are largely limited by the clinical experience of radiologists. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to perform two-stage classification (Normal/Abnormal and Benign/Malignancy) of two- view mammograms through convolutional neural network. In this study, we constructed a multi-view feature fusion network model for classification of mammograms from two views, and we proposed a multi-scale attention Den

Pattern Recognition and Size Prediction of Microcalcification Based on Physical Characteristics by Using Digital Mammogram Images.

Breast cancer is one of the life-threatening cancers occurring in women. In recent years, from the surveys provided by various medical organizations, it has become clear that the mortality rate of females is increasing owing to the late detection of breast cancer. Therefore, an automated algorithm is needed to identify the early occurrence of microcalcification, which would assist radiologists and physicians in reducing the false predictions via image processing techniques. In this work, we propose a new algorithm to detect the pattern of a microcalcification by calculating its physical charac

Validation of results from knowledge discovery: mass density as a predictor of breast cancer.

The purpose of our study is to identify and quantify the association between high breast mass density and breast malignancy using inductive logic programming (ILP) and conditional probabilities, and validate this association in an independent dataset. We ran our ILP algorithm on 62,219 mammographic abnormalities. We set the Aleph ILP system to generate 10,000 rules per malignant finding with a recall >5% and precision >25%. Aleph reported the best rule for each malignant finding. A total of 80 unique rules were learned. A radiologist reviewed all rules and identified potentially interesting ru

Computer-aided detection of masses in full-field digital mammography using screen-film mammograms for training.

It would be of great value when available databases of screen-film mammography (SFM) images can be used to train full-field digital mammography (FFDM) computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, as compilation of new databases is costly. In this paper, we investigate this possibility. Firstly, we develop a method that converts an FFDM image into an SFM-like representation. In this conversion method, we establish a relation between exposure and optical density by simulation of an automatic exposure control unit. Secondly, we investigate the effects of using the SFM images as training samples compar

The role of arbitration of discordant reports at double reading of screening mammograms.

OBJECTIVE: To asses the effectiveness of arbitration of discordant double readings in mammography screening. DESIGN: A retrospective study of 1217 consecutive arbitrations. SETTING: A subset of discordant double readings from the Florence screening programme underwent arbitration by a third reader. RESULTS: Positive arbitration of 1217 discordant double readings prompted assessment in 476 cases (39.2%), detecting 30 cancers (6.3%). Of 741 negative arbitrations (60.8%), 311 have been followed up thus far, and two cancers (0.64%) occurred in the site previously suspected at one of the two ind

Resection Process Map: A novel dynamic simulation system for pulmonary resection.

OBJECTIVE: Use of 3-dimensional computed tomography for preoperative and intraoperative simulation has been introduced in the field of thoracic surgery. However, 3-dimensional computed tomography provides only static simulation, which is a significant limitation of surgical simulation. Dynamic simulation, reflecting the intraoperative deformation of the lung, has not been developed. The aim of this study was to develop a novel simulation system that generates dynamic images based on patient-specific computed tomography data. METHODS: We developed an original software, the Resection Process Ma

Using coronary computerized tomographic images to predict the bulging second genu of the facial nerve in mastoidectomy.

The aim of the present study is to determine whether coronary CT images of the temporal bone are useful to predict a bulging second genu of the facial nerve (SGFN) in mastoidectomy by measuring and comparing the heights of the SGFN above the prominence of the lateral semicircular canal (PLSC) in medial-to-lateral dimension on coronary CT images and in mastoidectomy. The relationship between the SGFN and the PLSC in medial-to-lateral dimension, which may have big variability, can be evaluated on the coronary CT images of the temporal bone. The heights of the SGFN above the PLSC in medial-to-lat

Referenceless stratification of parenchymal lung abnormalities.

This paper introduces computational tools that could enable personalized, predictive, preemptive, and participatory (P4) Pulmonary medicine. We demonstrate approaches to (a) stratify lungs from different subjects based on the spatial distribution of parenchymal abnormality and (b) visualize the stratification through glyphs that convey both the grouping efficacy and an iconic overview of an individual's lung wellness. Affinity propagation based on regional parenchymal abnormalities is used in the referenceless stratification. Abnormalities are computed using supervised classification based on

Functional ureteral obstruction due to complex pelvic venous anomaly.

Venous anomalies are rare causes of ureteral obstruction. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman with obstruction of the right distal ureter by a complex pelvic venous anomaly. Beside benign and malignant lesions of the retroperitoneum, venous anomalies should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of extrinsic ureteral obstruction. Due to its abilities of three-dimensional visualization, multi-detector row computed tomography is helpful in the depiction of venous anomalies.

Right coronary artery to left ventricle fistula--effective diagnosis with 64-MDCT.

Coronary artery fistula is a rare congenital anomaly in which a communication is present between a cardiac chamber or another vascular structure. In this paper, we describe a 52-year-old asymptomatic male patient with a right coronary artery to left ventricle fistula. We demonstrate the effectiveness of 64-MDCT (Multi-detector row computed tomography) in demonstrating the precise anatomy of this fistula in which transthoracic echocardiography was inadequate for evaluation.
