Levels of plasma gonadotropins, prolactin (PRL), and testosterone, and the testicular concentration, total content, and affinity of hCG binding sites were measured in male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and in genetically matched normotensive (WKY) rats. Brattleboro rats were housed singly in metabolic cages and continuously infused with saline. Timed urine collections were analyzed for Na+ and K+; oxytocin (OT)-like material was estimated by RIA. Postheparin plasma lipoprotein lipase has been investigated in male sprague-Dawley rats fed a diet deficient in copper. Deficiency was verified by the detection of anemia, hypercholesterolemia and decreased myocardial copper. Three experiments were done; they showed significant decrease in enzyme activity (40-47% reduction) in deficiency. Copper may be required for the formation of the activator complex of the enzyme. Decreased lipoprotein lipase activity may be responsible for the hypertriglyceridemia of copper deficiency, and that may also explain its hypercholesterolemia.

Duodenal and ileal calcium transport was studied by 45Ca uptake and estimation of unidirectional fluxes in vitro in kidney-intact and 5/6-nephrectomized rats. After normal-calcium diet, calcium transport was impaired by uremia in the duodenum but not in the ileum. However, 5/6-nephrectomized rats on low-calcium diet showed, in concert with impaired growth, a reduced calcium transport both in duodenum and ileum. The satiety-eliciting effect of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), a putative mammalian counterpart of bombesin (BBS), was examined in mildly food-deprived rats. Intraperitoneal injections of GRP resulted in a significant decrease of 30-minute food intake at 2, 4, 8 and 16 micrograms/kg, while 1 microgram/kg had no reliable effect. Intraperitoneal GRP at 4 and 8 micrograms/kg did not suppress 30-minute water consumption by thirsty rats. The effect of pyridoxine deficiency on cholesterol catabolism was studied in rats. The concentrations of bile lipid components were higher in pyridoxine-deficient rats than in controls. A decreased ratio of taurine to glycine conjugates was observed in the deficient rats. No change in the neutral sterol content, but an increase in the bile acid content of the feces was observed in the deficient rats. Increased cholesterol catabolism in pyridoxine-deficient rats was also shown by the shorter half-life of the [14C] cholesterol injected into these animals.
