Stress responses in the chemistry and mRNA abundance of the peripheral blood in the American alligator.

To monitor physiological and toxicological conditions in an endangered species, noninvasive to minimally invasive sampling methods are needed. We analyzed peripheral blood cells to determine if we could monitor some physiological responses of the American alligator following capture stress. Juvenile American alligators were restrained for 16 h to examine the stress response in plasma and blood cells. Plasma corticosterone concentrations were increased by restraint as were plasma concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), uric acid, and glucose; a sexually dimorph

[Changes of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in the hippocampus caused by prenatal stress induce depression- and anxiety-like behaviors in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the pathogenic role of changes of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in the hippocampus in depression- and anxiety-like behaviors caused by prenatal stress (PS) in offspring rats. METHODS: Twelve female SpragueDawley rats weighing 240-260 g were randomly divided into control and restraint stress groups. The rats in the control group received no interventions, and those in restraint stress group were subjected to restraint stress (three times a day, 45 min each time) at the gestational age of 14-20 days. The 1-month-old offspring rats underwent open field test and forced swi

Cervical spine immobilisation in the elderly: a literature review.

Developed populations are ageing rapidly and by 2040, approximately 1 in 4 adults will be over 65 years of age. This is resulting in higher incidence of traumatic injury in older patients. Cognitive and physical comorbidities in this group can pose significant challenges. Due to mechanisms of injury and pre-existing degenerative spinal disease, cervical spine fractures are particularly prevalent in elderly patients. These are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this literature review we examine current evidence surrounding the use of cervical spine immobilisation in elderly

An Examination of Care Practices of Pregnant Women Incarcerated in Jail Facilities in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: The number of incarcerated women in the United States has been steadily increasing over the last 30 years. An estimated 6-10% of these women are pregnant at intake. Previous studies on the health needs and care of pregnant incarcerated women have focused mainly on prison settings. Therefore, we examined the pregnancy-related accommodations and health care provided for regional jail populations. METHOD: The present study is a quantitative survey (administered through phone or email to employees of predominately jail medical facilities) of common practices and policies employed acros

[Involuntary medication as the intervention of choice: can this be regarded as 'substitution' or as a preventive measure? a prospective cohort study].

BACKGROUND: Since the Dutch Mental Health Act of 1984 came into effect, seclusion has often been used as the measure of choice for dealing with aggressive or dangerous patients. In 2012 the Ministry of Health formulated a policy whereby seclusion was to be phased out, but not replaced by involuntary medication. In 2007, within the framework of the Mental Health Act, the Argus system of registering coercive measures was introduced in order to monitor the reduction in the use of seclusion and involuntary medication. This article describes, in a longitudinal cohort study, the effect of the policy

Establishment of an animal model of depression contagion.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common and important cause of morbidity, and results in a significant economic burden. Recent human studies have demonstrated that that depression is contagious, and depression in family and friends might cumulatively increase the likelihood that a person will exhibit depressive behaviors. The mechanisms underlying contagion depression are poorly understood, and there are currently no animal models for this condition. METHODS: Rats were divided into 3 groups: depression group, contagion group, and control group. After induction of depression by 5 weeks of chronic u

Effect of restraint stress on lead-induced male reproductive toxicity in rats.

This study was undertaken to investigate whether chronic immobilization stress interferes with lead-induced reproductive toxicity in rats. Early pubertal male Wistar rats were subjected to either restraint stress (5 hr/day) or maintained on lead (0.15%) containing water or both for 60 days. Restraint stress or lead treatment significantly decreased the weight of the testes and epididymis. The daily sperm production, epididymal sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm viability were also decreased after exposure to lead or subjected to restraint stress. The levels of serum testosterone and also a

Prenatal stress induces long term stress vulnerability, compromising stress response systems in the brain and impairing extinction of conditioned fear after adult stress.

Stress is a risk factor for the development of affective disorders, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other anxiety disorders. However, not all individuals who experience either chronic stress or traumatic acute stress develop such disorders. Thus, other factors must confer a vulnerability to stress, and exposure to early-life stress may be one such factor. In this study we examined prenatal stress (PNS) as a potential vulnerability factor that may produce stable changes in central stress response systems and susceptibility to develop fear- and anxiety-like behaviors af

Anxiety and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responses to psychological stress are attenuated in male rats made lean by large litter rearing.

An excellent strategy to treat overactive responses to stress is to exploit the body's inherent stress-inhibitory mechanisms. Stress responses are known to differ between individuals depending upon their level and distribution of adiposity and their experiences in early life. For instance, we have recently shown that female rats made obese by overfeeding during the neonatal period have exacerbated responses to psychological stress. The converse may be true for those that are underfed during this period. In this investigation we hypothesized that rats made lean by neonatal underfeeding would ha

Injury severity differentially alters sensitivity to dexamethasone after traumatic brain injury.

We have reported differential short- and long-term dysregulation of the neuroendocrine stress response after traumatic brain injury (TBI) produced by controlled cortical impact (CCI). We have now investigated three possible mechanisms for this TBI-induced dysregulation: (1) effects on the sensitivity of negative-feedback systems to glucocorticoids; (2) effects on the sensitivity of pituitary corticotrophs to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH); and (3) effects on neuronal loss in the hilar region of the dentate gyrus and in the CA3b layer of the dorsal hippocampus. TBI was induced to the lef

Efficacy of a child-friendly form of constraint-induced movement therapy in hemiplegic cerebral palsy: a randomized control trial.

Constraint-induced (CI) movement therapy is a promising therapy for improving upper limb function in adults after stroke. It involves restraint of the non-involved limb and extensive movement practice with the involved limb. In this study, a single-blinded, randomized, control study was performed to examine the efficacy of CI therapy, modified to be child friendly, in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Twenty-two children (8 females, 14 males; mean age 6 y 8 mo [SD 1 y 4 mo]; range 4-8 y) were randomized to either an intervention group (n=11) or a delayed treatment control group (n=

PVN c-fos expression, HPA axis response and immune cell distribution during restraint stress.

It is well known that stress affects the central nervous system (CNS), neuroendocrinoimmune system and other peripheral organs such as the gastrointestinal tract. However, the process of adaptation or recovery after acute stress reactions in these systems or organs during prolonged stress has not yet been adequately investigated. To clarify the process of adaptation or recovery in these systems and organs after acute stress reactions, the time course of these responses during a single long-duration restraint stress (RTS) was studied. The expression of c-fos in the hypothalamic paraventricular

Tryptophan hydroxylase mRNA levels are elevated by repeated immobilization stress in rat raphe nuclei but not in pineal gland.

Repeated stress triggers a wide range of adaptive changes in the central nervous system including the elevation of serotonin (5-HT) metabolism and an increased susceptibility to affective disorders. To begin to examine whether these changes are mediated by alterations in gene expression for tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), the rate-limiting enzyme in 5-HT biosynthesis, we quantitated its mRNA levels by competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Repeated immobilization stress (2 h, 7 days) elicited a six- or ten-fold rise in TPH mRNA in median raphe nucleus (MRN) and dor

Protective effects of Acanthopanax senticosus Harms from Hokkaido and its components on gastric ulcer in restrained cold water stressed rats.

The aim of this study is to investigate the pharmacological effect of the stem bark of Acanthopanax senticosus Harms from Hokkaido (Japanese name: Ezoukogi) in place of the root bark as a restorative tonic on the stress-induced gastric ulcer. In the test, the extract of the stem bark of A. senticosus prepared with hot water was dissolved in water and used for the assay of the protective effect of gastric ulcer (erosion) on stressed rats that were restrained on cold water. The result from a single oral administration of the stem bark of A. senticosus-extract (50, 100 and 500 mg/kg, per day) dis

Stress-induced norepinephrine release in the paraventricular nucleus of rats with brainstem hemisections: a microdialysis study.

Immobilization (IMMO) of conscious rats evokes marked increases in release of norepinephrine (NE) in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, consistent with a role of NE in the PVN release of corticotropin-releasing hormone and therefore in pituitary-adrenocortical activation during stress. The present study examined the effects of surgical hemisection of the brainstem between the locus ceruleus and rostral portion of the medulla on release of NE in the PVN of the hypothalamus in vivo in conscious rats, at baseline and during IMMO. Concentrations of NE, the intraneuronal NE meta

Restraint stress potentiates analgesia induced by 5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine: comparison with morphine.

mu-Opioid receptor agonists, e.g. morphine, produce analgesia that can be potentiated by restraint stress. Adenosine receptor agonists, e.g. 5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (NECA), also produce analgesia. To determine if adenosine-induced analgesia is also potentiated by stress, dose- and time-effect curves for NECA (0.01-0.1 mg/kg s.c.) were generated in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats either unrestrained or restrained in Plexiglas cylinders, using the tail-flick assay. Morphine (1.0-5.6 mg/kg s.c.) was also tested for comparison. Both compounds produced dose-dependent increases in tail-flick l

Enhanced effect of chronic stress on pregnancy outcome in Uje:WIST rats by prenatal treatment with lithium.

Female Uje:WIST rats were exposed to lithium (20 mmol LiCl/l drinking water, lithium levels about 1 mmol/l serum) for at least three weeks before mating and continuously up to the end of gestation. Female F1-offspring were raised without further treatment and mated at an age of 90-120 days with untreated males. The effect of chronic restraint stress during gestation on pregnancy outcome was estimated. Moderate changes (higher frequency of prolonged gestation, decreased body mass of the newborn pups) resembled those which were induced by considerably longer stress exposure (extended to the prem

Beta-adrenergic receptors are involved in stress-related behavioral changes.

Cerebral noradrenergic systems have been implicated in stress-related changes in behavior. Previous studies with receptor antagonists suggested that alpha 1-adrenergic receptors were involved in defensive withdrawal in rats and in investigatory behavior in mice tested in the multicompartment chamber. However, beta-adrenoreceptor antagonists attenuated the restraint- and ICV CRF-induced changes in defensive withdrawal, suggesting that beta-adrenergic receptors may also be involved in stress-related responses. To determine whether the beta-adrenergic antagonist effect was limited to rats tested
