Examination of the microstructures of the lower cervical facet based on micro-computed tomography: A cadaver study.

The cervical facet has complicated 3D microstructures and inhomogeneities. The cervical facet joint, which also participates in the formation, plays a certain role in regulating and limiting the movement of the spine. Correct identification and evaluation of its microstructure can help in the diagnosis of orthopedic disease and predict early phases of fracture risk. To evaluate the safety of the cervical spine by measuring and analyzing the microstructures and morphometric parameters of bone trabeculae in the normal cervical facet with high-resolution 3D micro-computed tomography. Thirty-one s

Enteric Neuronal Damage, Intramuscular Denervation and Smooth Muscle Phenotype Changes as Mechanisms of Chagasic Megacolon: Evidence from a Long-Term Murine Model of Trypanosoma cruzi Infection.

We developed a novel murine model of long-term infection with Trypanosoma cruzi with the aim to elucidate the pathogenesis of megacolon and the associated adaptive and neuromuscular intestinal disorders. Our intent was to produce a chronic stage of the disease since the early treatment should avoid 100% mortality of untreated animals at acute phase. Treatment allowed animals to be kept infected and alive in order to develop the chronic phase of infection with low parasitism as in human disease. A group of Swiss mice was infected with the Y strain of T. cruzi. At the 11th day after infection, a

Prevalence study of nevi in children from Barcelona. Dermoscopy, constitutional and environmental factors.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma is becoming an increasingly important problem in public health as incidence rates have been increasing continuously in Caucasian populations. Childhood and adolescence is an important time of life for the formation and evolution of nevi, and the presence of a higher number of nevi in early life could predict a major risk of developing melanoma. OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine the number of nevi and the dermoscopic pattern predominance in children of our population. (2) To relate it to constitutional and environmental factors. METHODS: Clinical and dermoscopic exam

Sonographic appearance of hemorrhagic ovarian cyst with acute abdomen by transvaginal scan.

Hemorrhagic ovarian cyst (HOC) which is one of the functional cysts, is often involved in acute abdomen leading to laparatomy intervention. The reason for this mainly lies in the fact that it is easily misdiagnosed as an organic mass because of the presence of lower abdominal pain and the variable appearance of ultrasonographic images at presentation. We analyzed 15 cases of HOC associated with acute abdomen, of which in 2 cases the disease was confirmed by laparotomy. The remaining 13 cases were followed-up clinically and by daily transvaginal sonography (TVS) from the first detection of the

Projections of the nucleus of the optic tract to the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis and prepositus hypoglossi nucleus in the pigmented rat as demonstrated by anterograde and retrograde transport methods.

This NRTP-ph projection is entirely bilateral and arises from parts of both subdivisions of the nucleus targeted by NOT afferents. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a non-neoplastic pulmonary disease that is characterized by the formation of scar tissue within the lungs in the absence of any known provocation. IPF is a rare disease which affects approximately 5 million persons worldwide. The prevalence is estimated to be slightly greater in men (20.2/100,000) than in women (13.2/100,000). The mean age at presentation is 66 years. IPF initially manifests with symptoms of exercise-induced breathless and dry coughing. Auscultation of the lungs reveals early inspiratory crackles, predominantly located in the lower poster

Cholinoceptive pontine reticular structures modify the postural adjustments during the limb movements induced by cortical stimulation.

1. Activation of the pontine reticular formation (pRF) and the related medullary inhibitory reticulospinal (RS) system decreases the postural activity. This effect can be achieved either by local injection into the dorsal pontine tegmentum of cholinergic agonists which excite cholinoceptive pRF neurons, or by injection of noradrenergic agents which block the inhibitory influence exerted by the locus coeruleus (LC) neurons on the pRF. The main aim on the present study was to analyze the effects of tonic activation of these pRF neurons on the postural adjustments accompanying limb movements indu…

Ligustilide enhances TNTs-mediated mitochondrial transfer to accelerate the reactivation of TECs in sleep deprivation induced postpartum mouse.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Danggui) has been widely used by puerperae in China for postpartum recovery for more than a thousand years. Its key active ingredient, ligustilide (LIG), has been documented to exert thymus-repairing effects; however, its role and underlying mechanisms in postpartum thymic regeneration impairment remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: During the puerperium, the acutely atrophied maternal thymus gradually returns to its non-pregnant state. However, frequent sleep deprivation (SD) resulting from neonatal breastfeeding often slows down

Brainstem Neural Circuits Triggering Vertical Saccades and Fixation.

Neurons in the nucleus raphe interpositus have tonic activity that suppresses saccadic burst neurons (BNs) during eye fixations, and that is inhibited before and during saccades in all directions (omnipause neurons, OPNs). We have previously demonstrated via intracellular recording and anatomical staining in anesthetized cats of both sexes that OPNs are inhibited by BNs in the medullary reticular formation (horizontal inhibitory BNs, IBNs). These horizontal IBNs receive monosynaptic input from the caudal horizontal saccade area of the superior colliculus (SC), and then produce monosynaptic inh…

Ligustilide prevents thymic immune senescence by regulating Thymosin β15-dependent spatial distribution of thymic epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Thymus is the most crucial organ connecting immunity and aging. The progressive senescence of thymic epithelial cells (TECs) leads to the involution of thymus under aging, chronic stress and other factors. Ligustilide (LIG) is a major active component of the anti-aging Chinese herbal medicine Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, but its role in preventing TEC-based thymic aging remains elusive. PURPOSE: This study explored the protective role of Ligustilide in alleviating ADM (adriamycin) -induced thymic immune senescence and its underlying molecular mechanisms. METHOD: The protectiv

The murine meninges acquire lymphoid tissue properties and harbour autoreactive B cells during chronic Trypanosoma brucei infection.

The meningeal space is a critical brain structure providing immunosurveillance for the central nervous system (CNS), but the impact of infections on the meningeal immune landscape is far from being fully understood. The extracellular protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei, which causes human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness, accumulates in the meningeal spaces, ultimately inducing severe meningitis and resulting in death if left untreated. Thus, sleeping sickness represents an attractive model to study immunological dynamics in the meninges during infection. Here, by combining

GLI1-Altered Tumors of the Ovary: A Report of 4 Cases of an Underrecognized Neoplasm That May Mimic Sex Cord-Stromal Tumors.

GLI1 (glioma-associated oncogene homologue 1) altered neoplasms are an emerging group of tumors of presumed mesenchymal derivation, which occur mostly in the head and neck or soft tissues of the trunk and extremities. We have recently identified 4 ovarian neoplasms with GLI1 gene fusions; all were initially diagnosed as unusual sex cord-stromal tumors (n = 3) or endometrioid adenocarcinoma with sex cord-like morphology (n = 1). Patients' age ranged from 11 to 70 years and tumor size from 3 to 15 cm; all were confined to the ovary. Three tumors displayed dominant patterns of large irregular agg
