Retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy is extremely rare. We present a case of a retroperitoneal ectopic pregnancy with a gestational sac located to the left of the abdominal aorta and of the left renal vessels at 9 weeks of gestation. Careful transabdominal sonographic examination is suggested when an ectopic pregnancy is suspected and the examination of the pelvis is negative.

Lymphangioma is a rare, benign mesenchymal neoplasm, which is characterized by numerous intercommunicating cystic spaces containing lymphatic fluid. It is considered a congenital disease resulting from the obstruction of regional lymph drainage during the developmental period. Lymphangioma frequently occurs in the cervical neck and axilla, also in the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, mesentery, omentum, colon, and pelvis, rarely in the perirenal space. These tumors usually present in childhood, but infrequently, these also present in adults. Patients often complain of hematuria, flank pain, or ab

Injury to the nerves of the aortic- and superior hypogastric plexuses during retroperitoneal surgery often results in significant post-operative complications, including retrograde ejaculation and/or loss of seminal emission in males. Although previous characterizations of these plexuses have done well to provide a basis for understanding the typical anatomy, additional research into the common variations of these plexuses could further optimize nerve-sparing techniques for retroperitoneal surgery. To achieve this, the present study aimed to document the prevalence and positional variability o

OBJECTIVE: To compare the surgical effect of three-dimensional (3D) versus 2D laparoscopic surgery in ureter lithotomy.
METHODS: From January 2014 to 2015 May, 45 patients with ureteral calculi were randomly allocated into 2 groups to undergo ureter lithotomy under 3D laparoscopy (25 cases) and 2D laparoscopy (20 cases). The time used for each surgical process (including the exposure, D-J tube discharge, suture and other surgical procedures) was recorded and compared between the two groups.
RESULTS: The operation was completed smoothly in all the 45 patients. In this cohort, the wound draina

Paraneoplastic pemphigus is a rare autoimmune bullous dermatosis, which is caused by potential neoplasm, especially the Castleman's disease. Castleman's disease associated with paraneoplastic pemphigus is misdiagnosed frequently and easily in clinical practices. Furthermore, it is reported that the mortality rate for this disease is very high. Bronchiolitis obliterans is the most common complication and the most important cause of death. There was a female patient presenting recalcitrant mucocutaneous erosions, ulcers and scattered erythemas in the body. The patient was diagnosed and treated f

BACKGROUND: There has been extensive debate in the surgical literature regarding the optimum surgical access approach to the infrarenal abdominal aorta during an operation to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The published trials comparing retroperitoneal (RP) and transperitoneal (TP) aortic surgery show conflicting results.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of the transperitoneal versus retroperitoneal approach for elective open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair on mortality, complications, hospital stay and blood loss.
SEARCH METHODS: The Cochrane Vascular Trials Search

PURPOSE: This paper aims to describe the rare post-operative complication of a lymphocele formation after lateral lumbar interbody fusion.
METHODS: The patient in this case was a 76-year-old lady with a 10 year history of low back pain and neurogenic claudication. She had previously underwent multiple spine surgeries for her condition. She presented to our institution for a recurrence of her low back pain and right anterior thigh pain. She then underwent surgery in two stages; first, a mini-open lateral interbody fusion at L3/4 and L4/5; second, posterior instrumentation of T3 to S1 with sagi

BACKGROUND: Isolated retroperitoneal cystic masses are uncommon with an estimated incidence of 1/5750 to 1/250,000. The majority present with size related symptoms, complications, or a mass. Approximately a third of patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally. Aetiologies of retroperitoneal cystic masses (RPC) include mesenteric, omental, splenic and enteric duplication cysts. Neoplastic RPCs can be divided into epithelial (mucinous or serous cystadenoma), mesothelial (mesothelioma), germ cell (cystic teratoma) and cystic changes in a solid neoplasm (paraganglioma, neurilemmoma, s

Hemoperitoneum in peritoneal dialysis patients is a known but infrequent complication. Hemoperitoneum is more frequent in women because of its association with a variety of gynecologic presentations such as reflux menstruation, ovulation, endometrial tissue implants within the peritoneal cavity (endometriosis), and bleeding follicular cysts. Other intraperitoneal causes of hemoperitoneum include minor catheter or abdominal trauma, vascular anomalies, or hepatic or splenic cysts. Less frequently encountered is a presentation of hemoperitoneum from a retroperitoneal source. These presentations r

OBJECTIVES: To describe a rare case of a retroperitoneal duplication cyst that fistulized to the vagina.
METHODS: Case description and discussion of a patient found to have an intestinal duplication cyst.
RESULTS: A patient presented for a laparoscopic hysterectomy because of menorrhagia and a fibroid uterus. She also complained of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) and a vaginal discharge. A retroperitoneal intestinal duplication cyst that fistulized to the vagina and caused her recurrent UTIs was identified. Surgical resection of the cyst resolved her complaint of recurrent UTIs.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: A direct lateral interbody fusion (DLIF) is relatively new, yet commonly performed procedure in spine surgery. This procedure is associated with risk, including damage to nerve or vascular structures. However, to our knowledge, there has not been a case of an abscess developing at the site of a postoperative hematoma after this procedure.
PURPOSE: The objective was to document a case of the delayed presentation of an abscess at the site of a postoperative hematoma after a DLIF.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: The study was designed to be a case report and literature review.

Cystic hydatid disease is an endemic disease caused by the larval form of Echinococcus spp. Isolated renal involvement is extremely rare. The treatment methods for renal hydatid disease require some form of intervention, ranging from traditional open techniques to laparoscopic techniques. Herein, we present a large hydatid cyst in the lower pole of the left kidney in a 43-year-old male patient who was treated by the "closed cyst" method via the retroperitoneal laparoscopic approach to prevent soiling of the peritoneal cavity. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a renal hydatid cyst tre
