Cough-induced rib fracture is a very rare condition, with a few cases described in the medical literature. This case report describes the case of a 77-year-old male patient with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who presented with left eighth and ninth rib fractures after severe cough secondary to upper respiratory tract infection. The patient had a good clinical outcome, followed by conservative management. Conservative treatment is the first-choice approach in cases of daily activities limiting symptoms or complications. Cough-induced rib fracture should be remembered

BACKGROUND: Evaluating segmental variations in the lumbar plexus is crucial for neurological diagnosis. In the present study, we examined the relationship between the segmental composition of the lumbar plexus and length of the 12th rib.
PROCEDURES: To evaluate segmental variations in the lumbar plexus, the furcal nerve (Nf) which forms the boundary between the lumbar and sacral plexus, was used as an index of plexus arrangement.
MAIN FINDINGS: Segmental variations in the Nf were classified into four groups on the basis of whether the Nf originated from the ventral rami of L3 and L4 (Nf L3 +

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Feil syndrome was first described in 1912; a short neck, low posterior hairline, and decreased cervical joint range of motion are the classical triad of this disease. In this syndrome, which is rarely observed, the characteristics that have been reported include the following: scoliosis; Sprengel deformity; cervical rib; ear, nose, oral, and laryngeal abnormalities; structural abnormalities of the urinary system; and congenital heart diseases. However, bilateral omovertebra and bilateral multilevel cervical ribs have not been reported.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We aimed to present…

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess the pattern and impact of sternal injury with rib fracture in a Level 1 trauma center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of trauma registry data to identify patients who presented with sternal fracture between 2010 and 2017. Data were analyzed and compared in patients with and without rib fracture.
RESULTS: We identified 212 patients with traumatic sternal injury, of them 119 (56%) had associated rib fractures. In comparison to those who had no rib fracture, patients with rib fractures were older (40.1 ± 13.6 vs. 37.8 ± 14.5), were frequent

STUDY DESIGN: Single-center retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected registry.
OBJECTIVES: Identify factors predictive of rib-based distraction (RBD) instrumentation wound complication. Create a risk stratification model for RBD instrumentation wound complication.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: RBD instrumentation procedures have a high rate of wound complications, often requiring unplanned operative treatment. Currently, there is a relative lack of understanding of RBD complication risk factors compared with the comprehensive understanding of complication risk factors for other spin

Congenital anomalies of the ribs are relatively common, and they can be divided in numerical (for example cervical ribs) or structural abnormalities (for example bifid ribs). These anomalies are usually asymptomatic. Literature on symptomatic bifid ribs is limited. We present the case of a 36-year old male without any relevant medical history or medication who was referred to our center. After lifting a heavy object, he experienced sudden onset pain on the right anterior chest, with associated shortness of breath. Computed tomography of the chest showed a significant hemothorax on the right si…

Although surgical fixation of rib fractures is increasingly being performed around the world, very little has been published on how to access the chest wall itself. Having performed over one hundred rib fixations in our institution in the past five years, our surgical technique has evolved as more has come to be understood about these types of injuries through examination of the literature, our own experience, and discussions with colleagues experienced in treating these patients. Retrospective chart review of our trauma registry revealed prevalent fracture patterns and we sought to describe t

BACKGROUND: Many patients have inadequate long-term analgesia, respiratory distress, and hypoxemia due to a long-standing substantial smoking history or the presence of primary pulmonary diseases; analgesic treatment is not valid in these patients. Even if the imaging findings of rib fractures are relatively mild, rib fractures may cause severe position limitation, respiratory distress, and hypoxemia.
AIM: To investigate the curative effect of surgical treatment for patients with severe non-flail chest rib fractures.
METHODS: A total of 78 patients from our hospital with severe noncontinuous

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of acute osteomyelitis in young children can be challenging due to the lack of specific clinical signs and symptoms. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent complications and to improve long-term prognosis and reduce the need for operative intervention. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) may be a useful tool to detect early changes associated with osteomyelitis.
CASE REPORT: A 26-month-old boy presented with 6 days of fever and 3 days of focal pain over the right anterior lower ribs without swelling, erythema, or bony deformity, and negative chest x-ray stud…

BACKGROUND: This is the first reported case of a primary intraosseous angioleiomyoma and the second case of a primary leiomyoma of the rib, irrespective of age. Angioleiomyomas mostly occur in patients of advanced age, in any part of the body, particularly the lower extremities and present as painful, slow-growing nodules in the dermis, subcutaneous fat or deep fascia. Other localizations, especially bone, are considered extremely rare, as well as their occurrence in paediatric patients.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old girl was admitted to the orthopaedic surgery department for further asses

Pleural space or chest wall infection is a contraindication to surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) because of the risk of hardware infection. However, the exact degree of risk is uncertain. SSRF is associated with a decreased need for mechanical ventilation and pneumonia. This case report describes a patient with polytrauma and Candida colonization of the mediastinum who successfully underwent SSRF.

INTRODUCTION: Rib fractures are a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in trauma patients. It is well documented that optimizing pain control, mobilization, and respiratory care decreases complications. However, the impact of these interventions on hospital costs and length of stay is not well defined. We hypothesized patients with multiple rib fractures can be discharged within three hospital days resulting in decreased hospital costs.
METHODS: A retrospective review of adult patients (≥18yrs) admitted to our Level 1 trauma center (2011-2013) with ≥2 rib fractures was performed. Pati

Cough may be associated with complications such as syncope, urinary incontinence, pneumothorax, and less frequently, pulmonary hernia and costal fractures. Chronic cough is a cause of rib fractures and when they occur it is likely to affect more than one rib. We report a 53 year-old obese male in treatment with enalapril 10 mg for hypertension with a dry cough lasting five months. He consulted for bilateral chest pain and a Chest X ray examination showed symmetrical fractures in the seventh left and right ribs. Enalapril was discontinued, cough and pain subsided in two weeks.

The geriatric trauma population is unique. These patients are at risk of being discharged to rehabilitation or a skilled nursing facility, instead of being returned to their homes, placing a significant burden on both the patient families and society. This study evaluated which patient characteristics increase the likelihood of a previously independent geriatric blunt trauma becoming functionally dependent and being discharged to a location other than home. Data were extracted from the National Trauma Data Bank from 2012 to 2014 for blunt trauma patients ≥65 years old, admitted from home, with

OBJECTIVE: Rib fractures are present in more than 150,000 patients admitted to US trauma centers each year. Those who fracture two or more ribs are typically treated with oral analgesic drugs and are discharged with few complications. The cost of this care generally reflects its brevity. When a patient fractures three or more ribs, there is an elevated risk of complication. In response, treatments are often broadened and their durations prolonged; this affects cost. While health, function, and survival have been widely explored, patient billing has not. Thus, we evaluated the financial implica…

We present the case of a 57-year-old man who had suffered pain in the left hemithorax for a year, which started after a period of severe coughing during pneumonia. The pain was triggered by lying down. A computed tomography scan revealed two nonunion costal fractures. In the operating room, intercostal diastasis with pulmonary herniation was encountered in addition to the costal fractures. This report describes the technique used to reconstruct the thoracic wall with mesh and plate-osteosynthesis.

Flail chest is a common complication in patients with blunt chest wall traumas resulting in high mortality rates. In this case report a 43-year-old woman was stepped on by a horse, thereby receiving multiple rib fractures and pneumohaemothorax. She was not able to wean from epidural analgesia after ten days and maintained a "thoracic floating feeling". In opposition to the non-operative management previously preferred, a surgical stabilization was then performed in the patient, who was discharged only five days later. Thus, surgical fixation of multiple rib fractures may reduce inpatient stay.
