The indiscriminate use of antibiotics during the past 50 yr in human and veterinary medicine and agriculture has enhanced the selection of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (AMRB) and genes (ARG), representing a serious threat to public health worldwide. Wildlife can act as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) environmental pollution, contributing to the dissemination of AMRB and ARG, especially in aquatic environments impacted by anthropogenic activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of the coypu (Myocastor coypus), an invasive semiaquatic species, as an ecologic

Being an ectoparasitic species of gamasid mite, Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Haemolaelaps glasgowi) can serve as the potential vector of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and some other zoonotic diseases. This study reported the distribution and infestation of A. fahrenholzi on rodents and other sympatric small mammals (hosts) across five provincial regions of China for the first time. Infestation indexes were conventionally calculated. At 39 out of 122 survey sites, 1364 A. fahrenholzi mites were identified from 345 rodents and other sympatric small mammal hosts. The hosts of the mit

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses are rodent-borne zoonoses causing haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome. In Europe, Puumala virus (PUUV) and Dobrava virus (DOBV) account for most recognized disease; Seoul virus (SEOV) is relevant to ports and urban settings. The 2026 MV Hondius cruise-ship cluster of Andes hantavirus (ANDV) infections, involving passengers from 23 countries, has highlighted urgent gaps in European preparedness for both endemic and imported hantavirus disease.
OBJECTIVES: To review hantavirus epidemiology, ecology, clinical recognition, diagno

Lassa fever (LASV; Mammarenavirus lassaense) is an endemic zoonosis in West Africa. Human infections arise from rodent-to-human transmission, primarily from the synanthropic reservoir Mastomys natalensis (M. natalensis). In Sierra Leone, small-mammal communities vary across land-use gradients, shaping LASV transmission risk. How anthropogenic environments facilitate the rodent-rodent interactions remains poorly understood. Small mammals were sampled over 43,266 trap nights in Sierra Leone's LASV-endemic Eastern Province, detecting 684 rodents and shrews. To assess potential transmission, space

Chronic stress is a major risk factor for several psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. This review synthesizes rodent-based findings showing that stress modifies immune function in the central nervous system (e.g., microglia), the neurovascular unit, and the peripheral circulation. Stress paradigms such as chronic social defeat stress or chronic variable stress induce morphological and transcriptomic changes in microglia, disrupt blood-brain barrier integrity, and mobilize immune cells (e.g., monocytes, neutrophils). These cells, in turn

Despite extensive functional mapping studies using rodent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), interpreting the fMRI signals in relation to their neuronal origins remains challenging due to the hemodynamic nature of the response. Ultra high-resolution rodent fMRI, beyond merely enhancing spatial specificity, has revealed vessel-specific hemodynamic responses, highlighting the distinct contributions of intracortical arterioles and venules to fMRI signals. This 'single-vessel' fMRI approach shifts the paradigm of rodent fMRI, enabling its integration with other neuroimaging modalities t

Statins are the drugs recommended for the treatment of dyslipidemia and for preventing cardiovascular risks in humans. However, it is reported that statins may impair reproductive parameters in males at different periods of exposure in pre-clinical studies. This work carried out a systematic review of the literature concerning the primary studies that evaluated the reproductive outcomes in male rats and mice exposed to several statins available on the market. The literature search was performed employing several databases, including Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, and SciELO, b

South American hemorrhagic fevers (SHF), a group of zoonotic diseases caused by various virus families including Arenaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Filoviridae, and Flaviviridae, are primarily confined to geographic areas where their host species reside. Transmission to humans occurs through direct contact with infected animals, especially rodents, and when infected, humans can transmit diseases to other humans through person-to-person interactions and other means, leading to illnesses that range from mild to life-threatening conditions. Diseases such as Argentine hemorrhagic fever, caused by the Jun

Habitats with the sympatric occurrence of several ixodid tick species are significant from an epidemiological perspective. These habitats can influence the diversity and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens, and their monitoring can help estimate the risk of infection. A total of 1260 questing ticks from five species (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor marginatus, Dermacentor reticulatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, and Haemaphysalis inermis) were collected from vegetation using the flagging method in three different habitats in eastern Slovakia. Additionally, 900 rodent-attached ticks of six species (I. r

Lyme disease (LD) is a threat to public health in southern regions of Canada. In response, we used a One Health approach to design an integrated intervention in a high-incidence LD community in southern Québec aiming to increase preventive behaviours in the population and reduce the density of Borrelia burgdorferi-infected Ixodes scapularis ticks in the environment. The environmental component involved distributing fluralaner baits to rodents around residential properties and public trails from 2019 to 2023. Effectiveness was measured by changes in the density of questing nymphs (DON) and the

A growing number of studies has highlighted the importance of coinfections in eco-evolutionary processes underlying host-parasite interactions and the resulting epidemiology of zoonotic agents. Small mammals, and particularly rodents, are known to be important reservoirs of many zoonotic pathogens, such as Toxoplasma gondii and Trypanosoma lewisi, that are responsible for toxoplasmosis and atypical trypanosomiasis in humans, respectively. Laboratory experiments on rodent models have shown that primary infection with T. lewisi increases the host sensitivity to other parasites, including T. gond

The computational capabilities of neuronal networks are fundamentally constrained by their specific connectivity. Previous studies of cortical connectivity have mostly been carried out in rodents; whether the principles established therein also apply to the evolutionarily expanded human cortex is unclear. We studied network properties within the human temporal cortex using samples obtained from brain surgery. We analyzed multineuron patch-clamp recordings in layer 2-3 pyramidal neurons and identified substantial differences compared with rodents. Reciprocity showed random distribution, synapti

Hantaan virus (HTNV) is asymptomatically carried by rodents, yet causes lethal hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in humans, the underlying mechanisms of which remain to be elucidated. Here, we show that differential macrophage responses may determine disparate infection outcomes. In mice, late-phase inactivation of inflammatory macrophage prevents cytokine storm syndrome that usually occurs in HTNV-infected patients. This is attained by elaborate crosstalk between Notch and NF-κB pathways. Mechanistically, Notch receptors activated by HTNV enhance NF-κB signaling by recruiting IKKβ and p65

Estrogens, acting through their receptors (ERα and ERβ), regulate cell turnover in the pituitary gland, influencing cell proliferation and apoptosis across various species. However, their role in pituitary processes in seasonally reproducing animals remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the influence of estrogens, through the expression of their specific receptors, on the apoptosis of PD cells in relation to sexual maturity, the reproductive cycle, and pregnancy in a seasonal reproductive rodent (Lagostomus maximus maximus). ERα and caspase-3-cleaved (CASP3c) immunoreactive

Amblyomma maculatum sensu lato (s.l.) is an ixodid tick found in the semi-arid southwestern United States and northern Mexico where it is a parasite of medical and veterinary significance, including as a vector for Rickettsia parkeri, a cause of spotted fever rickettsiosis in the Americas. To describe the comprehensive natural history of this tick, monthly small mammal trapping and avian mist netting sessions were conducted at sites in Cochise County Arizona, within the Madrean Archipelago region where human cases of R. parkeri rickettsiosis and adult stages of A. maculatum s.l. were previousl
