OBJECTIVE: Brain metastasis (BM) from bone and soft tissue sarcomas (STS) is very rare and mostly predicts dismal prognosis. Owing to its' rarity, data on optimal therapy including surgical management, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy is scarce. We sought to assess the prevalence, disease characteristics, and outcomes of BM in bone and STS patients treated at a single institution.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for consecutive bone and STS patients treated at King Hussein Cancer Center from 2007 to 2020. Patients with BM were identified. Survival was estimated by the Kaplan

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is defined by a chimeric transcription factor, resulting from fusion of the N-terminal domain of the Ewing's sarcoma gene EWS to the three C-terminal zinc fingers of the Wilms' tumor suppressor WT1. Although DNA-binding sites have been defined for the uninterrupted WT1 zinc finger domains, the most prevalent isoforms of both WT1 and EWS-WT1 have an insertion of three amino acids [lysine, threonine, and serine (KTS)], which abrogates binding to known consensus sequences and transactivation of known target genes. Here, we used cDNA subtractive hybridiz

Metastatic pediatric solid tumors require tailored surgical approaches guided by tumor histology, treatment response, and multidisciplinary collaboration. This article reviews current strategies for surgical management of metastases across common pediatric cancers, including osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, hepatoblastoma, and nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas. Emphasis is placed on indications for metastasectomy and the integration of surgery with systemic therapies. Special considerations for extrapulmonary metastases including liver, lymph node, bone, and b…

Malignant small round cell tumors represent a diagnostic challenge for cytologists and pathologists. This case series describes four cases of unusual metastasis of small round cell tumors subtypes into body cavities generating effusions in which fluid cytological examination suggested the neuroendocrine origin of the tumors. Tumor diagnosis (Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor and desmoplastic small round cell tumors) were unknown at the cytological evaluation. We can highlight the importance of the accurate analyses of body fluids, both for early diagnosis of metastatic disease, and

Primary bone sarcomas are rare, heterogeneous malignancies with limited therapeutic options, particularly in metastatic disease where outcomes remain poor. This study synthesizes current literature to evaluate emerging therapeutic strategies and biological determinants of response across osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma, as presented at the ESMO Annual Meeting, 2025. Key approaches reviewed include VEGFR-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), DNA damage response (DDR) inhibition, MYC targeting, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), and surfaceome-directed therapies such as a…

A thorough literature search revealed no previous reports of this entity, and we are the first to describe a case of a high-grade sarcoma arising from a recurrent immature teratoma misdiagnosed as growing teratoma syndrome. The patient was a 23-yr-old female, diagnosed at the age of 20 with a Stage IIIB immature ovarian teratoma. After surgery and chemotherapy, the patient developed multiple liver and pelvic masses that were diagnosed as mature teratomas based on small samples obtained by computed tomography-guided core biopsy. Three years after diagnosis the patient presented with severe resp

The variety of tumor-specific cytogenetic and genetic alterations among small round cell tumors (Ewing family of tumors, rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma, and lymphoma) increases the possibility of genotypic diagnosis of them. In Ewing's sarcoma and related peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors, a (11;22)(q24;q12) translocation is associated with hybrid transcripts of the EWS gene with the FLIl gene. In alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a (2;13)(q35;qt4) translocation is associated with a chimeric gene between PAX3 and FKHR. Specific genetic alterations of the short arm of chromosome 1 and ampli

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Maintenance therapy (MT), particularly antiangiogenic approaches such metronomic chemotherapy (MC), correspond to the continuous administration of low-dose anticancer agents in a context of minimal residual disease. While widely used in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia for decades, MT has recently shown promise in solid tumors. Additionally, antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) are increasingly explored in pediatric sarcomas.
RECENT FINDINGS: This review summarize current evidence on MT efficacy in pediatric sarcomas, focusing

Gray scale ultrasonography is a useful tool in evaluating pelvic and abdominal soft tissue masses that may be associated with bone neoplasms. Four patients are described: two with giant cell tumors, one with Ewing's sarcoma, and one with a sacrococcygeal teratoma. Ultrasound is especially helpful in assessing the extent of disease, treatment planning, and in following the results of therapy.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is a sparsely used diagnostic method in the evaluation of mediastinal sarcomas in most medical centers worldwide with most literature citations regarding this category of malignancies consisting of small series and individual case reports. Most of these published studies highlight vascular sarcomas such as epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, and angiosarcoma, various subtypes of liposarcoma including well-differentiated liposarcoma, myxoid liposarcoma, and pleomorphic liposarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and sarcomas of uncertain differentia

BACKGROUND: Beyond follicular-derived thyroid carcinomas, lymphomas, and metastatic disease, there are rare pathologies of the thyroid gland that represent a challenge. We report patients with unusual malignancies that mimic similar aggressive cancers.
METHODS: Retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Eight patients with aggressive thyroid tumors presented with clinical and radiographic features concerning for anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC). Three patients presumed to be diagnosed with Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma (ALES), each harboring an EWSR1-FLI1 rearrangement. One patient with an enlargi

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of the parotid gland is a rare and aggressive cancer, predominantly affecting the deep soft tissues of the lower extremities, and is more frequently observed in the elderly. Its occurrence in the head and neck area, particularly in the parotid gland, is exceedingly rare. This study presents a 75-year-old male who exhibited a substantial, swiftly-enlarging mass on the left side of the mandible, which was diagnosed as CCS of the parotid gland. Morphologically and immunohistochemically, CCS shares characteristics with melanomas, and Ewing sarcoma, complicating differentia

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a rare subclass of sarcoma. Histologically, they are characterized by bland-appearing fibroblastic spindle cells and are similar to sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) subtype. The standard treatment of this aggressive tumor subtype is surgical removal with wide excision in conjunction with doxorubicin chemotherapy. Due to the rarity of this disease, effective systemic therapies are lacking and patient outcomes remain poor. Herein, we report on a 50-year-old male who presented with severe shortness of breath. Subsequent imaging revealed pericardia

Bone tumors are considered by most pathologists difficult to diagnose as they are rare, have overlapping morphology, need radiological correlation, and the usefulness of immunohistochemistry is limited, making conventional morphology the cornerstone of the diagnosis. Over the past decade, more and more has become known of the molecular background of bone tumors. Three groups of bone tumors are recognized, namely, tumors with specific translocations combined with a relatively simple karyotype involving chromosomal translocations (Ewing sarcoma, aneurysmal bone cyst), tumors with specific gene m

INTRODUCTION: Clear cell sarcoma of the gastrointestinal tract (CCS-GI) is an extremely rare and aggressive tumor, which often mimics other neoplastic processes. Because of this feature, its real incidence may have been underestimated, especially in the past when genetic tests were less available than nowadays. To date, less then 30 cases have been described in the literature on the GI tract.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 69-year-old woman who presented with active rectal bleeding. After a negative colonoscopy, the patient underwent a video-capsule endoscopy. The latter detected

BACKGROUND: Ifosfamide is currently used to treat pediatric sarcomas and increasing its dosage may be associated with a better response rate. Prolonged continuous infusion seems an attractive administration modality.
METHODS: Ifosfamide 14 g/m(2) (with mesna 14 g/m(2)) was administered through an ambulatory portable pump over 14 days as a continuous infusion, starting every 3 weeks, in 14 patients with relapsing sarcomas. No growth factors were given.
RESULTS: Acute grade 3 hematological toxicity was observed in only 13/66 cycles and red cell transfusions were given in two patients. Hematuri

Primary Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumour (ES/PNET) of the kidney is a rare neoplasm characterized by an aggressive clinical course. Most often, ES/PNET arises in the chest wall and paraspinal locations, and less commonly in the limbs or the genitourinary tract. We present a rare case of renal ES/PNET presenting as Budd-Chiari syndrome.
