HIV testing and high risk sexual behaviour among London's migrant African communities: a participatory research study.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the demographic and behavioural factors associated with HIV testing among migrant Africans in London. METHODS: A cross sectional survey of migrants from five sub-Saharan African communities (Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe) resident in London was carried out. The study formed part of a larger community based participatory research initiative with migrant African communities in London-the MAYISHA project. Trained, ethnically matched interviewers recruited study participants in a variety of community venues. A brief self completion questionnaire collected data on

Value of self-care for sexual and reproductive health.

It is opportune for the Journal to contribute to Self-Care Month and Self-Care Day, as proclaimed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its efforts to promote self-care which is increasingly prominent in discourses in resource-limited settings for attaining universal health coverage. With sexual and reproductive health and rights facing hindrances, such as cultural barriers, self-care should facilitate access to services whilst maintaining privacy. Largely limited to pregnancy beforehand, self-care can now be promoted for the self-management of medical abortion, self-administration of inje

Detection of Party Drugs on Mobile Phones in Relation to Self-Reported Use and Oral Fluid Detection Among NYC Nightclub Attendees.

OBJECTIVES: Self-report and biospecimen testing to assess drug exposure have limitations. Surface testing of personal objects (e.g., mobile phones) may provide complementary information about drug exposure, particularly when there is discordance between biospecimen results and self-report. We examined whether mobile phone swab testing, alongside self-report and oral fluid data, could provide information regarding drug exposure among nightlife attendees-a population with high prevalence of party drug use. We also examined whether detection could inform situations in which a drug is detected in

Psychological Determinants of Men's Adherence to Cascade Screening for BRCA1/2.

BRCA1/2 germline mutations predispose carriers to an increased risk of breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic, and skin cancer. Men and women are equally likely to pass on or inherit the pathogenic variant. However, there is evidence that male relatives are less involved in cascade screening than female ones. At the same time, little attention has been given to the research on psychological determinants of men's adherence to cascade screening in BRCA1/2-positive families. Applying some principles of the Health Action Process Approach model, the present research tested a model of relationships o

Home-based HPV self-sampling assisted by a cloud-based electronic data system: Lessons learnt from a pilot community cervical cancer screening campaign in rural Ethiopia.

Primary HPV testing and triage of HPV-positive women is an effective cervical cancer screening strategy. Such a multi-visit screening algorithm is also promising for community-based screening in resource-poor communities, provided a robust tracking system is in place. A cervical cancer screening campaign was conducted in a rural community in Ethiopia. All women aged 25-65 years were offered genital self-sampling using the Evalyn Brush®. Samples were HPV-DNA-tested at a central laboratory. Key indicators were captured on tablet computers and linked by a cloud-based information system. HPV-posit

Lessons Learned From the Implementation of a Pilot Study on Self-collected Specimen Return by Sexual Minority Men (Project Caboodle!): Qualitative Exploration.

BACKGROUND: Self-collection of specimens at home and their return by mail might help reduce some of the barriers to HIV and bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening encountered by gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). To evaluate the benefits and challenges of bringing this approach to scale, researchers are increasingly requesting GBMSM to return self-collected specimens as part of web-based sexual health studies. Testing self-collected hair samples for preexposure prophylaxis drug levels may also be a viable option to identify GBMSM who face adherence di

Integrating Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing and Treatment With Routine HIV Care in Gaborone, Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing is not routinely offered in many countries, and management is symptoms based. Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are associated with an increased risk of HIV transmission. We assess the feasibility and acceptability of integrating CT/NG testing into routine HIV care in Botswana, as well as the prevalence and correlates of CT/NG infections. METHOD: A prospective study was conducted at an HIV clinic in Gaborone between February and October 2019. Eligibility criteria included the following: ≥18 years, HIV infected, a

Structural and Functional Validation of a Full-Thickness Self-Assembled Skin Equivalent for Disease Modeling.

Recently, various types of in vitro-reconstructed 3D skin models have been developed for drug testing and disease modeling. Herein, we structurally and functionally validated a self-assembled reconstructed skin equivalent (RSE) and developed an IL-17a-induced in vitro psoriasis-like model using a self-assembled RSE. The tissue engineering approach was used to construct the self-assembled RSE. The dermal layer was generated using fibroblasts secreting their own ECM, and the epidermal layer was reconstructed by seeding keratinocytes on the dermal layer. To generate the psoriatic model, IL-17A wa

Clinician Discussion of Family Cancer Risk and Use of Genetic Testing Among US Adults With a Family History of Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Family history plays a key role in assessing inherited cancer risk, but genetic testing is still underused at the population level. The role of clinician-patient discussion in this gap is not well characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the association between clinician discussion of family cancer risk and use of genetic testing among US adults with a first-degree family history of cancer. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2023 National Health Interview Survey. The exposure was self-reported clinician discussion of family cancer risk, and the outcome was

Performance of Unobserved Self-Collected Nasal Swabs for Detection of SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR Utilizing a Remote Specimen Collection Strategy.

BACKGROUND: The use of a remote specimen collection strategy employing a kit designed for unobserved self-collection for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) can decrease the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and exposure risk. To assess the impact of unobserved specimen self-collection on test performance, we examined results from a SARS-CoV-2 qualitative RT-PCR test for self-collected specimens from participants in a return-to-work screening program and assessed the impact of a pooled testing strategy i

Vaginal self-sampling is a cost-effective way to increase participation in a cervical cancer screening programme: a randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening coverage remains insufficient in most countries. Our objective was to assess whether in-home vaginal self-sampling with a dry swab for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) testing is effective and cost-effective in increasing participation in cervical cancer screening. METHODS: In March 2012, 6000 unscreened women aged 30-65 years, living in a French region covered by a screening programme, who had not responded to an initial invitation to have a Pap smear were equally randomised to three groups: 'no intervention'; 'recall', women received a letter to

Using Human-Centered Design and Development to Create a Digital Sick Day Medication Guidance Application for People With Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, or Chronic Kidney Disease: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease are associated with high morbidity and costs of care. Medications can reduce long-term complications but may contribute to complications such as hypoglycemia and acute kidney injury during acute illnesses. Sick day medication guidance (SDMG) could help prevent these adverse events, but evidence for effective strategies to deliver this guidance is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We iteratively designed and developed a digital prototype user interface (UI) to deliver SDMG for patient self-management. The application, called "Preventin
