BACKGROUND: Few data exist on the serologic outcome of treponemal tests in congenital syphilis.
METHODS: A chart review was conducted on all confirmed early congenital syphilis cases in Edmonton, Canada, from 2005-2010.
RESULTS: Of the 16 cases identified, 11 (69%) infants seroreverted their treponemal tests by 18 months. Cases that did not serorevert their treponemal tests were statistically more likely to have delayed treatment and to have higher maternal rapid plasma reagin titers at birth.
CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the majority of early congenital syphilis cases will serorevert

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a 6-year-old male who had clinically diagnosed aseptic meningitis and subsequently died. Several standard serologic tests that use polyclonal antibody and indirect immunofluorescence and hemagglutination inhibition tests that use monoclonal antibody provided evidence that the isolate was an antigenic subtype of prototype North American EEE virus. We believe that this is the first evidence of an antigenic subtype of EEE virus.

The sera of 25 patients with bacteriological diagnosis of typhoid fever were analyzed to identify and measure the antibodies to S. typhi somatic antigens using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique (ELISA). The results were positive in all the serologic tests, with titers varying from 1:600 to 1:2500. Development and standardization of the technique, results of the intra-assay and inter-assay tests and their correlation to Widal's reaction are described in detail.

Mycotic infections are common and their incidence is increasing. They can be difficult to distinguish from other infections, particularly tuberculosis, but there are numerous clinical clues that can help suggest the presence of systemic mycoses. Histoplasma skin tests, serologic tests, and agent isolation can aid in the confirmation of a fungal infection. Clinical considerations must be put in the proper perspective before a definitive treatment is proposed. Specific chemotherapy is often curative.

Of 495 patients reported in a large urban histoplasmosis outbreak, we studied 276 whose serologic tests were done in a single laboratory. Serologic test results were positive in 96% of these patients (compared with less than 5% of controls from an endemic area), cultures were positive in 22%, and special stains in 19%.
