Clavicle fractures are common traumatic injuries of the shoulder girdle, with surgery being the recommended treatment for some displaced midshaft fractures. Open surgery is widely used; however, the primary concerns of this procedure include cosmetic problems and incisional complications, such as wound dehiscence, infection, numbness, and sensitivity. A new arthroscopically assisted technique was developed, in which the Knowles pin was used for percutaneous fixation to treat the displaced midclavicular fracture. This technique is an attractive alternative treatment option for midclavicular fra

Luxatio erecta or inferior glenohumeral dislocation is a rare type of shoulder dislocation, accounting for less than 1 % of all reported shoulder dislocations. We describe a 15-year-old male who presented with luxatio erecta following an injury to his shoulder that resulted from a mountain biking accident. Clinically, the patient had shoulder pain and fixed abduction of the arm. Radiographs confirmed the diagnosis of luxatio erecta. A magnetic resonance arthrogram (MRA) performed 9 days after presentation demonstrated both a greater tuberosity fracture and avulsion of the anterior and posterio

The authors use both radiographic and CT examination for diagnosing fractures of the scapula. The standard trauma series consists of chest radiograph, ap radiograph of injured shoulder girdle, ap and lateral radiographs of the scapula (Neer I and II views). According to our experience, the axillary view is not very helpful. Chest radiograph allows for assessment of the thoracic wall, lungs and of both of the shoulder girdles, particularly the position of both scapulas with regard to the spine (thoracoscapular dissociation). The radiograph of the shoulder girdle should cover the entire scapula,

Fifteen cases of isolated fracture of the first rib are submitted. The mechanism of the fracture is discussed. It proved compatible with the descriptions in the literature, caused either by direct trauma to the shoulder, a sudden violent contraction of juxtacostal muscles; or else it was a chance finding, without any history of trauma and as such interpreted as a fatigue fracture. A case of Horner's syndrome complicating a fracture of the first rib is also described.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is to present an unusual lesion combining instability of the shoulder with a fracture of the coracoid process.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors have treated one case of recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder associated with pseudarthrosis of the coracoid process. The shoulder was stabilised by surgery using the Latarjet procedure.
DISCUSSION: The association of an anterior dislocation of the shoulder and pseudarthrosis of the coracoid process is very unusual. It is often unrecognized because of poor knowledge of this lesion or poor quality

Stress fractures of the acromion and scapular spine are well-known complications following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. However, these fractures in patients with massive rotator cuff tear or cuff tear arthropathy are extremely rare, and the pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of these fractures are poorly understood. We report a case of bilateral stress fracture of the posterior angle of the acromion in a patient with massive rotator cuff tear and discuss the pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, and treatment with a review of the literature.

Proximal humeral fractures, predominantly affecting the elderly, pose significant treatment challenges due to the complex anatomy of the shoulder joint and variability in bone quality. MultiLoc nails (Synthes USA Products, West Chester, USA) are the latest construct, and PHILOS (Proximal Humerus Internal Locking System, (Synthes USA Products, West Chester, USA)) plates are the earlier construct used for the fixation of proximal humerus fractures. This systematic review aims to provide a comparison of MultiLoc nails and PHILOS plates, focusing on their effectiveness, safety, and patient outcome

PURPOSE: Operative therapy for unstable lateral clavicle fractures is necessary to reduce the risk of bony non-union. Irritation and restriction during sportive activities due to the implanted materials are a common reason for impaired function and implant removal. The aim of this study was to gain information on functional outcome and time until return to sport (RTS) after surgical treatment of unstable lateral clavicle fractures, comparing two coracoclavicular button techniques.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients who were consecutively treated for unstable lateral clavicle fr

BACKGROUND: With technologic advances such as locked periarticular plating, hemiarthroplasty of the humeral head, and more recently reverse total shoulder replacement, surgical treatment of proximal humerus fractures has become more commonplace. However, there is insufficient information regarding patient outcomes after surgery, such as the frequency of unplanned hospital readmissions and factors contributing to readmission.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We measured (1) the frequency of unplanned hospital readmissions after surgical treatment of proximal humerus fractures, (2) the medical and surgical

PURPOSE: Radiographic parameters which correlate with poor clinical outcome after proximal humeral fractures could be helpful indicators to answer the question which patients should be followed up closer. Moreover, during surgery, radiographic parameters correlating with unfavourable outcome should be avoided. The primary aim of the study was to compare radiographic measurements between the injured and the contralateral, uninjured shoulder. The secondary aim was to correlate these radiographic parameters with post-operative shoulder function.
METHODS: Fifty-eight patients (age: 55.6 ± 14.4 ye

BACKGROUND: Proximal humeral fractures are common injuries. Although certain fracture types may benefit from surgery including open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF), the optimal method for fixation is unclear. Newer implant designs that improve healing by minimizing hardware failure and recurrent fracture displacement may optimize clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Over a 27-month period, 37 consecutive patients with proximal humeral fractures were treated by a single surgeon with a lateral humeral plate through which an intramedullary nitinol cage was inserted. Additional screws were placed throu

INTRODUCTION: The standard treatment for clavicle fractures non operative but surgical management is essential in certain specific indications. The purpose of this study is to report a not very commonly seen bilateral fracture of a clavicle in a young female patient treated with intramedullary fixation.
CASE REPORT: A 23 year old female patient sustained a bilateral clavicle fracture as a result of direct blow to shoulder and was treated with intramedullary K wires on both sides in single sitting. Postoperatively arm was maintained in a sling for 3 weeks. The implant was removed after a month

BACKGROUND: Patients with greater tuberosity fractures of the humerus often require surgery. Therefore, there is a need to find a minimally invasive and effective surgical procedure with great patient outcomes.
AIM: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of the W-shaped suture technique under shoulder arthroscopy in the treatment of greater tuberosity fractures of the humerus.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, a total of 17 patients were included. The fractures were closed, and there was no neurovascular injury. These patients underwent arthroscopically assisted reduction and internal fixatio

Unreamed interlocked humeral nailing for stabilisation of acute humeral fractures was introduced a decade ago. Antegrade and retrograde nail insertion are equally popular. The role of nailing as opposed to plating of humeral fractures is the subject of continuous debate. Between 1997 and 2005, 99 acute fractures of the humeral shaft were treated operatively with the unreamed humeral nail (UHN, Synthes) in our Level I Trauma Centre. The mean age of the patients was 63 years. Only eight patients (8.1%) were polytraumatised, nine patients had an open fracture (9.1%), five had a primary radial ner
