Skull-stripping, an important pre-processing step in neuroimage computing, involves the automated removal of non-brain anatomy (such as the skull, eyes, and ears) from brain images to facilitate brain segmentation and analysis. Manual segmentation is still practiced, but it is time-consuming and highly dependent on the expertise of clinicians or image analysts. Prior studies have developed various skull-stripping algorithms that perform well on brains with mild or no structural abnormalities. Nonetheless, they were not able to address the issue for brains with significant morphological changes…

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastoma (HB) is a rare tumor, comprising about 2% of all intracranial tumors. Although it is a benign tumor, due to the … ted tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass lesion at the left anterior base of the skull, which could have been a meningioma. During the operation, the tumor was found to be located at the entrance of the left optic nerve tube, closely adhering to the left optic nerve and the blood supply was extremely abundant. The tumor was carefully …

Development, optimization and validation of transcranial ultrasound methods require the use of fresh human or animal skulls. However, to avoid fresh skull degradation over time, fixation methods are required for conservation, such as formaldehyde buffer solution. This method allows for conservation of the skull properties over a relatively long period, but requires specific conditioning (de-gassing) and storage conditions, such that its practical use is limited. Plastination appears to be a unique solution for the preservation and transportation of body parts without constraints. However, the …

BACKGROUND: About one-third of anterior skull base meningiomas show Hedgehog pathway activation. We have recently identified GAB1 as a surrogate marker for Hedgehog pathway-activated meningiomas.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the reproducibility and prognostic value of GAB1 marker in anterior skull base meningiomas.
METHODS: A retrospective bicentric cohort of anterior skull base meningiomas, operated from 2005 to 2015, was constituted. GAB1 immunohistochemistry was performed in 2 centers, and the GAB1 score was assessed. Clinical and pathological data were reviewed to determine the prognostic val…

A 78-year-old woman presented to the Emergency Department with a tree branch through the orbit. Her condition was rated 15/15 on the Glasgow coma scale. Computed tomography showed that the distal extremity of the branch was located between the intracavernous segment of the internal carotid artery and the temporal lobe. The foreign body pushed aside without penetrating the medial rectus, the optic nerve, the internal carotid artery, and the temporal lobe. No intracranial bleeding or pneumencephaly was observed. The chirurgical option was confirmed and the patient transferred for extraction of t

All modern crocodyliforms (alligators, crocodiles and the gharial) are semi-aquatic generalist carnivores that are relatively similar in cranial form and function. However, this homogeneity represents just a fraction of the variation that once existed in the clade, which includes extinct herbivorous and marine forms with divergent skull structure and function. Here, we use high-dimensional three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to quantify whole-skull morphology across modern and fossil crocodyliforms to untangle the factors that shaped the macroevolutionary history and relatively low pheno…

As a common feature, bilateral symmetry of biological forms is ubiquitous, but in fact rarely exact. In a setting of analytic geometry, bila … y assessment is examined. An application of the proposed assessments to a large collection of human skull data in the form of 3D landmark coordinates finds: (a) asymmetry of most skulls is not fluctuating, but directional if measured about a plane fitted to shared landmarks or side landmarks for balancing; (b) asymmetry becomes completely fluctuating if …

Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare entity, resulting from developmental abnormality during the migration of the embryonic thyroid germ from the floor of the primitive foregut to its final pre-tracheal position. Although ectopic thyroid tissue may be located anywhere, its location at the skull base is extremely rare. We report a case of ectopic thyroid tissue at the skull base in a 19-year-old man with multimodality imaging findings.

The cranial fontanelles and sutures have several benign variations, including most cases of "early" or "late" closure of the anterior fontanelle, bathrocephaly, overriding sutures, and benign metopic ridging. However, recognizing true craniosynostosis and referring the patient to a craniofacial specialist in a timely fashion are imperative, as minimally invasive options can be offered to most patients younger than 6 months of age. Gaining comfort with the physical examination of an infant with an abnormal head shape is best achieved through experience and pattern recognition and will frequentl

Middle meningeal vessels, dural venous sinuses, and emissary veins leave imprints and canals in the endocranium, and thus provide evidence of vascular patterns in osteological samples. This paper investigates whether craniovascular morphology undergoes changes in craniosynostotic human skulls, and if specific alterations may reflect structural and functional relationships in the cranium. The analyzed osteological sample consists of adult individuals with craniosynostoses generally associated with dolichocephalic or brachycephalic proportions, and a control sample of anatomically normal adult s…

Otalgia, otorrhea and hearing loss are the most common ear-related symptoms that lead to the consultation of an otolaryngologist. Furthermore, balance disorders and affections of the cranial nerve function may play a role in the consultation. In large academic centres, but also in primary care, the identification of rare diseases of the middle ear and the lateral skull base is essential, as these diseases often require interdisciplinary approaches to establish the correct diagnosis and to initiate safe and adequate treatments. This review provides an overview of rare bone, neoplastic, haematol…

INTRODUCTION: The orbital contents, afferent and efferent visual pathways, and the cranial nerves involved in eye movement, corneal sensation and eyelid closure traverse the skull base, a region bounded by the intracranial cavity, the paranasal sinuses, and the deep spaces of the face and head. As such, tumors from above or below have potential to affect some aspect of the visual system.
METHODS: We discuss here the clinical ophthalmologic and orbital considerations in the evaluation of patients with these tumors, as well as the ophthalmic sequelae of treatment with radiation or surgery (or b…

Horses and donkeys belong to the genus Equus, but important differences exist between the species, many of which affect their management and welfare. This study compared skull morphology between horses and donkeys. Horse (n = 14) and donkey (n = 16) heads were obtained post-mortem, sectioned sagittally close to the midline, and photographed for subsequent measurement of various skull structures. Skull, cranial, nasal, and profile indices were calculated for topographical comparisons between the species. The olfactory bulb area (OBA), OB pitch (the angle between the hard palate and the OB axis)…

The anterior skull base undergoes a progressive ossification after birth. This has implications on the epidural dissection of early trans-craniofacial osteotomy procedures such as monobloc advancements. Our purpose was to determine the rate of ossification in syndromic synostosis patients relative to a normal cohort to establish when maturation of the anterior skull base is complete. The authors analyzed CT scans from 35 patients with Crouzon, Apert or Pfeiffer syndrome, and 84 patients without any craniofacial anomaly between the ages of 0 and 6 years. The non-ossified anterior skull base are…

Growing skull fractures (GSFs) are well-known but rare causes of pediatric head trauma. They generally occur several months after a head injury, and the main lesion is located under the periosteum. We herein report a case involving a 3-month-old boy with GSF that developed by a different mechanism than previously considered. It developed 18 days after the head injury. A large mass containing cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissue was present within the periosteum. A good outcome was obtained with early strategic surgery. Injury to the inner layer of the periosteum and sudden increase in intracra…

RATIONALE: Plasmacytoma as the 1st presentation of skull tumors is a rare disorder. When it is combined with brain trauma or dramatic changes in intracranial pressure, patients are more prone to misdiagnosis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 67-year-old woman complaining of a headache presented with a history of head trauma for the past 1 hour. Emergency head computed tomography initially suggested an epidural hematoma.
DIAGNOSIS: Emergency surgery was performed to remove the intracranial hematoma, but a tumor-like mass was found during surgery, and pathologic assessment confirmed plasmacytoma. Surgery w…

Glomus tumors (paragangliomas) are rare, usually benign, neuroendocrine tumors that arise from nonchromaffin cells and can be multifocal or familial. They grow slowly, often infiltratively and rarely form metastases. A distinction is made between carotid, jugular, tympanicum and vagal tumors. Depending on the location, clinical symptoms include neck swelling, hearing loss with pulse-synchronous ear noise or cranial nerve failures (IX-XI). Diagnosis is often delayed because of nonspecific symptoms. Diagnostically, tumor expansion and perfusion can be well visualized by color Doppler sonography.

BACKGROUND: Skull base chordomas are locally invasive tumors which able to extend in different directions with skull base invasion. Although they are histologically benign, they have invasive nature makes total resection virtually impossible to achieve in most cases and this lead to residual tumors after surgery. To decrease postoperative surgical resection morbidity of these tumors, gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) was performed as alternative management for these residual chordomas to evaluate its safety and efficacy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was made on eight residual sk…
